Thing is even in game the government wasn't shooting EVERY scientist.

3. Disarm and Ziptie instead of shoot everything that moves. Even if we can't trust the egghead scientist and security guards, keeping them alive means more potential bullet sponges and meatshields
4. If Freeman is in the area get out of the fucking way. Don't help him but don't hinder him, stay out of the way of the death machine in orange.
You might be able to justify shooting scientists and janitors if you had plausible reason to believe the cascade event was a deliberate act of interdimensional terrorism and therefore everyone at black mesa could be considered enemy agents, but even in that far fetched scenario it's hardly ideal. The government would want to arrest and interrogate everyone involved in order to get some idea of what the hell was going on. If you have to liquidate them for a harebrained conspiracy, you'd do that afterwards. Going in guns blazing the way they did would imply they actually knew the scientists were all hapless bystanders who could be killed with no repercussions, but then there's really no point killing them. What's even crazier is that there's basically no way that black mesa isn't deep in the governments pocket anyway. It'd be like the feds going in and killing everyone at Lockheed because they built a bomb that was too powerful.
This just makes it even more irrational. If you don't kill EVERYONE then the survivors will tell anyone who will listen their story about how they killed all the other guys. The only logical option is to kill nobody, save aliens of course, but the second most logical option after that (still 90% illogical but w/e) is to kill absolutely everyone. Being selective serves absolutely no purpose.

The in game dialog makes it clear the administrator of Black Mesa, Dr. Breen, is the one who insisted on the processing of the sample despite the (suppressed) concerns about the possibility of a resonance cascade. Imagine how that would look in the investigation. Those alive scientist are going to say: >Yeah the administrator made us do it. We told him resonance cascade could happen. >Yeah the unaccounted for sample itself was delivered by a suHispanicious unaccounted for person (G-Man).
No, that can't happen. Dr. Breen contacted his buddies in the government and convinced them it was an alien collaborator plot or something and you need to kill them. Given his future history, you don't believe he became so corrupt overnight, and his position as an administrator was squeaky clean, do you?
Again, in game dialogue makes it obvious this isn't exactly business as usual for HECU. But orders are orders and there is a literal alien invasion going on. >Who ordered this mission anyway?
I find it funny how your supposedly more realistic version is less so because you ignore the mundane realities of managerial blame shifting and conspiracy for power that happens from a fast food franchise all the way to the top echelons of the government.
[Occram's Razor cut here due to lack of evidence]
And it may have been an alien collaborator plot or something indeed, just done by Dr. Breen. We know Black Mesa was sending people to Zen before us. We know the G-Man connection. It's entirely possible Dr. Breen was already in on the Combine invasion thanks to G-Man.
According to deep lore, G-Man himself may be a Shu'ulathoi awakened form stasis. His actions may appear contradictory but not so when you consider he could be leading Combine to the deathtrap called Earth in hopes of creating an opportunity to free the species form the Combine. Thant's why he instigated the resonance cascade fro a Combine invasion while at the same time guiding you to destroy them.
Considering that the people responsible tried to fix it, twice, and both times the plan backfired, I don't think letting any of them would be a wise idea.

Ive thought abt this for a bit and I think I have a decent plan.
1. send in special forces and drones to get a handle on the situation and to coordinate evacuation while the main force arrives
2. Establish complete air supremacy over black mesa, shoot down everything that doesnt respond to the IFF, use ground based air defenses and fighters.
3. Deploy our ground forces to handle evacuation in full MOPP gear (you probably see where this is going)
4. On PA announce that we're gonna be deploying nerve gas into the lower facilities of black mesa in exactly 3 hours. Instruct scientists to shelter in place and to try to establish positive pressure zones. Send down guys with nerve gas antidote and gas masks and round up stragglers either for evacuation or shelter in place.
5. Start pumping tons of nerve gas (VX preferably) into underground areas of black mesa while working with scientists to stop the portal storm.
6. The gas should be rising from underground sections to above ground in another few hours, use this time to mop up enemy ground forces and contain any holdouts.
7. We should have a living science team and a decent view of the situation and how to shut down the portal storm, the only issue being movement in the high NBC environment.
8. Get freeman to kill the nihalanth and shut down the portal storm
I think that nerve gas is a good idea because its something anyone who knows its coming can survive it easily but those who dont will die. Easy way to sterilize black mesa. Thoughts?
>anyone who knows its coming can survive it easily
I dont think most areas of the facility have handy dandy sealed rooms and such, plus, after the gas is gone, Xen is just gonna teleport more troops in.
if it werent an underground science facility id agree. However, black mesa likely has redundant and advanced chemical filtration systems and fire shelters that maintain positive pressure environments. These kinds of features are common even in above ground research facilities irl so id assume an underground facility that routinely deals with hazardous chemicals would be even more stringent. Keep in mind the power never really went out in black mesa so stuff like air pumps would likely still be functional.
Sounds ok but there's a chance nerve gas might not affect Xen lifeforms, your dudes go in expecting to do cleanup but the critters are just ornery and have a headache

For the HECU dialogue in the Black Mesa remake. How do you rate or think of the HECU dialogue? Decent job on the voice acting regardless of whether the soldier talking is realistic enough or not?
Those timeline videos are incredibly done.
Black Mesa remake really did polish some of the stuff, especially the atmospheric elements through things like radio chatter and EAS messages. But it also removed the charm of what was the original; The almost robotic sounding Marines, fearless meatheads out to kill and leaving (misspelled) graffiti around the facility. Black Mesa turns them into realistic soldiers, scared as shit of what they're encountering. It makes me feel bad for them. Almost difficult to see them as enemies.
You know one of the best parts is starting at 51:00 because look at the messages. You'll start noticing that the most of the announcements and messages are just system failure alerts and airstrike calls from whatever air units are still flying around Black Mesa. The messages from Military Personnel and surviving Black Mesa staff were getting less frequent until there is practically just silence save for error messages and Public Announcement systems. And despite the military pulling out apparently the Airforce is still hanging around to bomb some shit likely airstrike calls from the Black Ops guys who inserted into the area later on in the game.
Das right! The whole log and "chate" becomes eerily "quiet" after the military pulls out, by and large. When even the airstrikes become less and less frequent, and automated error messages about failing equipment or connections are what's in essence left.
Pleasantly surprised by the mod. Bit skeptical at first but they actually went far and beyond with this, i really like the interactions between the characters too. The Guard Duty devs should really take note.
Looking through more of the Walkthrough there's a whole lot more character interaction in this version of Blue shift, here's hoping they get that, One thing that was annoying in Opposing forces was that Shephard was a Marine and yet he spends 80% of the game alone
I'm genuinely curious as to how one can view OpFor as non-canon when Blue Shift is indisputably canon- it's not like valve came up with a brand new, coincidentally unrelated Barney Calhoun, who was also a security guard at black mesa
People who seethe about how bad Gearbox is now I guess. Really the only thing Valve really had a problem with was Race X and really in the grand plot they don't matter.
They could have been just a faction of alien scavengers who saw everything was going to go tits up and wanted to loot earth before someone else did.
When Shephard fucked their plan up they regrouped, realized the Combine were there and just went "Well fuck this we'll try again another dimension"
Absolutely love the way that you build up your squad and all the bants between them. Calhoun is not an autist like Gordon and actually interacts with others/the world.
Especially liked when you get them to safety and you can hang around them while they raid a cafeteria and you can just talk to them
Im presuming these things, based on the fact that we see G-man interact with the HECU in the opposing force DLC of HL1:
-I know something is coming
-We need to train for CQB (Its mentioned in a note)
1. First thing's first, outfit all of my marines with M4A1's instead of MP5's. Idk what gonna happen, but I bet that every 5.56 round out of a 14.5" barrel will be a shit ton more valuable than a 9mm out of a 9" barrel. This retrofit would also include M40 gas masks (at minimum) as well as MOPP gear if we can manage.
2. Get my guys to train for CQB like it's mentioned in game, as well as usage of CS gas, I also want them to do it in MOPP gear so that they're at least accustomed to it.
3. Attempt to get the Army and USAF involved, I'd like to have all hands on deck for whatever this is.
4. When anything remotely fishy happens at Black Mesa, immediately send in the HECU, and try to rally the Army and USAF (if step 3 doesn't work out.) If it works, hopefully the Army could handle the topside situation allowing the HECU to exclusively focus on the facility.
5. Round up everyone for quarantine and try to fix shit, if the aliens by this point are organized, it's gonna be CS gas city down there to try and minimize alien resistance without killing scientists.
6. Hope to god they figure it out before the aliens overrun everyone, cause they can teleport)
>First thing's first, outfit all of my marines with M4A1's instead of MP5's.
cringe hd pack fan
but also black mesa is an incredibly cramped environment, so YMMV. I'd keep some MP5s for anyone going particularly deep.
The OG Models are also wearing m40 gas masks already- the green lenses are honest to god based on actual outserts made by the military- the green dye in the plastic apparently absorbed laser radiation. They're not common, but they ARE real
I don't like that they have late 2000's gear. They should have looked like 90's US armed forced.
I don't like the HECU redesign in black mesa, but every time the year is mentioned in the manuals and the games it's always 200#, so 2000s gear makes sense
>the green dye in the plastic apparently absorbed laser radiation. They're not common, but they ARE real
huh. the things you learn. as a kid I thought it was their janky way of explaining "thats nighvision!" by the devs who thought the second barrel under the shotty was a second shooting barrel for the alternate fire
use the science team to find nihilanth's closest location then put a nuke there then maybe with their expertise humanity lasts seven days instead of seven hours against the combine
Retarded PrepHole lingo really fucked up this website.

There's a difference between a military force and people working for the CIA.
The Grunts are Military, the Female Assassins weren't military, that's why the two are never seen together in Canon Half-life.
Even if you ignore Opposing Forces completely, which Valve doesn't, it's clear that the female Assassins followed their own chain of command and operated independently from the normal Military.
That's why they stayed outside of the Reactor area even after the rest of the military was given the command to pull out, those orders didn't apply to them,
Considering Gordon fought the female ones, they are. And considering the Female Black Ops weren't HECU and in the original lore were CIA, that means the Black Ops are canon.
The only thing that is clearly in the "We can't accept as canon" range in Opposing Forces was Race X because it contradicts the Combine and Xen lore.
I'm genuinely curious as to how one can view OpFor as non-canon when Blue Shift is indisputably canon- it's not like valve came up with a brand new, coincidentally unrelated Barney Calhoun, who was also a security guard at black mesa
they are all canon and race X was a byproduct of the chaotic open rift being enforced by nihilanth. Things got more orderly invasion after combine muscled in the wake of its death which also cut off race X after their tunneler died at the end of OP.
Actually correct to say that Opposing Force isn't canon, but female black ops were in the base game.
>le OP4 not canon >Adrian Shepard on the keyboard keys in Portal >Portal is set in the Half-Life universe >Barney got his name in BS
wipe this "expansions are non-canon" meme off the face of the earth
I don't think there was anything they could do. The Combine arrived almost immediately after the Xen portals opened all over the world and overwhelmed every military in only 7 hours before the Earth governments capitulated. Notice how the HECU get no outside help in HL1 and its expansions. The US military is essentially fighting the Combine across all fronts and losing.
No there was enough time between Black Mesa and the Combine showing up, because supposedly by the time the Combine showed up most of the population was already evacuating to the cities from the countryside being overrun with Xenian lifeforms.

I guarantee Marc Laidlaw was making a Nightmare on Elm Street reference. If he wanted to be subtle he could've gone with Maple street, but if he weren't making a reference he could've just as easily said "down a suburban street" or specified a tree street name that didn't have any connotations, like Oak Street or Birch Street.

It's clear he was making some references to various films of that era.
Like that Ichthyosaur would have been looking like Jaws for sure.
>We will never have an 'HBO's Chernobyl' style miniseries of the Resonance cascade, showing the early disaster, HECU response, tribunal of Wallace Breen and life on earth months later when portal storms are rampant and the combine are days from invading
You know there was that whole subplot in Episode 1 where the Metrocops had decided to get the same idea as the rebels and just try to catch a train out of dodge.... it's a pity we never got a chance to get some defecting metrocops who would ignore the rebels because TRAIN RIGHT THERE
And get this three way battle of Combine soldiers, metro cops, and rebels all fighting over the trains
Fellow human, are you also enjoying your deliciously delectable rations? Us fellow humans should interact and socialize soon! Maybe with some of Dr. Breen's private reserves!
How are you gona sanatize the facility if you don't actually enter it? All the super spoopy research was done deep underground or in highly secure fortified buildings.
>Meanwhile, at the BlacPrepHole Mesa research facility
Lots of jannies walking around this morning. Let's atleast try to make it look like we're posting.
Actually work with the scientists and evacuate the personnel, using the scientists to navigate and either secure the base or just retrieve the most valuable information and equipment. Find out which of my guys is named Adrian Shepherd have him team up with Gordon.
The scientists were unknown entities at this point. As a result of the cascade everyone in Black Mesa was deemed compromised. They could be alien collaborators or carrying some kind of alien virus. Not worth the risk, just eliminate all liabilities asap. Some of the high ranking scientists were probably already on a short list for immediate extraction in the case of a catastrophic incident at the facility. The rank and file however, were simply shit out of luck.
They do not possess intradimensional teleportation tech. And they need open portals. Essentially, what happens at the end of Episode 2 (and Alyx) means that what is on Earth is the only remaining Combine forces unless they can open a portal again.
with the gift of hindsight I would have sent marines to, among other things, assist the scientists with launching the satellite early in the invasion to close our side of the rift, evacuate noncritical personnel and provide support and defense to the lambda complex while they spin up the portal so gordon and his team of HECU buddies can go ice the nihilanth
if this is done in a timely manner the portal storms that weakened earths defenses prior to the combine's arrival wouldn't happen and we'd stand a better chance against them. also if black mesa isn't destroyed we might be able to use the lambda complex to pinch off the combine's string based portal like a log
If it happened according to the avove story, the only option is to stick a row of nukes in the outskirts of all the major cities and the moment the towers appear detonate, it's the only way..
Also useful in case a city became headcrab zombie chow
But yeah if every single Combine Tower got toppled .5 seconds after appearing the Combine might just decide Earth is too crazy to bother with.
yeah it is pretty stupid how helpless everybody are against the headhumpers. It is not like they had not thought about it. In Alyx during the vodka factory the scavenger she saves is wearing a makeshift spiked helmet
Get facility schematics, find any shafts penetrating deepest into the facility, have teams quickly plant nukes in as many of these as possible to ensure the place is well and leveled.
Bonus mission: Capture a shock trooper so I can dress it in a custom tailored maid outfit and make it my cum-addicted bitch for as long as it lives.
put a bullet in Shepard's head before he can disable the nuke
you loose no matter what, because if the portal to xen isn't nuke the combine rape everyone within a week
Xen and the Combine aren't the same, you're fucked literally no matter what happens at black Mesa.
The Gman turned the nuke back on,
>t. Black ops assasins

To stop any viral or parasitic outbreaks, HECU type units are used to sanitize and quarantine places where Viruses and other Biological warfare contaminants might be, just look at what a clusterfuck the corona virus was, or look at the Lore of UBCS in Resident Evil.
You make it sound like these situations never happen. Like when Trump ordered the Feds to assassinate that one Antifa who killed a Proud Boy.
The in game dialog makes it clear the administrator of Black Mesa, Dr. Breen, is the one who insisted on the processing of the sample despite the (suppressed) concerns about the possibility of a resonance cascade. Imagine how that would look in the investigation. Those alive scientist are going to say:
>Yeah the administrator made us do it.
I, for one, welcome our combine overlords

I don't like that they have late 2000's gear. They should have looked like 90's US armed forced.

Ever played Black Mesa Blue Shift? It's a mod for Black Mesa that also REALLY hams up the buildup to the big fuckdeedooda
Its also made Blue Shift REALLY FUCKN GOOD
God damn, that scream in the end.
Get that VA a bafta
Pleasantly surprised by the mod. Bit skeptical at first but they actually went far and beyond with this, i really like the interactions between the characters too. The Guard Duty devs should really take note.
Looking through more of the Walkthrough there's a whole lot more character interaction in this version of Blue shift, here's hoping they get that, One thing that was annoying in Opposing forces was that Shephard was a Marine and yet he spends 80% of the game alone
Especially liked when you get them to safety and you can hang around them while they raid a cafeteria and you can just talk to them
sovl vs sovlless
>This is Echo 3 Juliet, I'm losing a lot of blood here...
6. Hope to god they figure it out before the aliens overrun everyone, cause they can teleport)
>in the opposing force DLC of HL1
Is this seriously how gen a refers to expansion packs?
>First thing's first, outfit all of my marines with M4A1's instead of MP5's.
cringe hd pack fan
but also black mesa is an incredibly cramped environment, so YMMV. I'd keep some MP5s for anyone going particularly deep.
The OG Models are also wearing m40 gas masks already- the green lenses are honest to god based on actual outserts made by the military- the green dye in the plastic apparently absorbed laser radiation. They're not common, but they ARE real
I don't like the HECU redesign in black mesa, but every time the year is mentioned in the manuals and the games it's always 200#, so 2000s gear makes sense
>the green dye in the plastic apparently absorbed laser radiation. They're not common, but they ARE real
huh. the things you learn. as a kid I thought it was their janky way of explaining "thats nighvision!" by the devs who thought the second barrel under the shotty was a second shooting barrel for the alternate fire
send in the best of the best.

use the science team to find nihilanth's closest location then put a nuke there then maybe with their expertise humanity lasts seven days instead of seven hours against the combine
How would you have handled black ops?
Wouldn't have to because they're not canon.
Actually correct to say that Opposing Force isn't canon, but female black ops were in the base game.
They were female assassins.
The entirety of the military in HL1 were black ops. They weren't identified as the HECU until Opposing Cringe and Blue Pill.
No they were clearly called Military by the Half-life script.
The Female Assassins were always Glowies
No mention of the HECU is made in any canon material. As far as we know the military presence in Half-Life has yet to be identified.
If you think that blue shift and opposing Force and DK aren't canon, you're very much in the minority.
I'm genuinely curious as to how one can view OpFor as non-canon when Blue Shift is indisputably canon- it's not like valve came up with a brand new, coincidentally unrelated Barney Calhoun, who was also a security guard at black mesa
Contrarian shitters say muh gearbox made it not Valve. See
>with a brand new, coincidentally unrelated Barney Calhoun
That is exactly what they claim, anon.
they are all canon and race X was a byproduct of the chaotic open rift being enforced by nihilanth. Things got more orderly invasion after combine muscled in the wake of its death which also cut off race X after their tunneler died at the end of OP.
>le OP4 not canon
>Adrian Shepard on the keyboard keys in Portal
>Portal is set in the Half-Life universe
>Barney got his name in BS
wipe this "expansions are non-canon" meme off the face of the earth
I don't think there was anything they could do. The Combine arrived almost immediately after the Xen portals opened all over the world and overwhelmed every military in only 7 hours before the Earth governments capitulated. Notice how the HECU get no outside help in HL1 and its expansions. The US military is essentially fighting the Combine across all fronts and losing.
The 7 hour war didn't happen at exactly the same time as the Black Mesa incident unless that's a stupid retcon from Alyx.
I thought it happened within a few hours of Black Mesa. Perhaps I was wrong
No there was enough time between Black Mesa and the Combine showing up, because supposedly by the time the Combine showed up most of the population was already evacuating to the cities from the countryside being overrun with Xenian lifeforms.
That takes at least months of build up.

Who's the one who flew into a rage ranting about Europeans in a Half-life thread? I thought it was nice we were having a thread without someone doing a sarcastic "What does this have to do with Ukraine".
Though on that note, why do Russians love Half-life so much? Was it just the "Half-life 2 looks like home!" or something more?

on a more serious note hl1 goldsrc engine was one of the first major ones that grew popular enough and was accessible enough to lend itself to modding. Also it ran on pretty much anything at the time which made it accessible to weaker spec machines
the hl1 engine was basically an evolved Quake 1 engine with extra stuff and a DLL instead of QuakeC, so there was already a huge fanbase of modders ready for it.
I was there 3000 years ago.

You cannot say the people who made this didn't borrow from Half-life.
And now I want Half Life to borrow from them 🙁
If Doom can have two movies then there's no reason for Half-life to not have one
here is the most important questions, does the combine AR3 live up to the hype

Don't know with you guys but I'm craving for some Water Flavored ration units sided with Gelatinous Egg Paste Rations!
I liked that they gave the low rank Combine soldiers some level of faculty and as the ranks rise they gradually become less and less humanized.

Lots of jannies walking around this morning. Let's atleast try to make it look like we're posting.
Shoot all sons of bitches. That's my official instructions.
ask gordon to suck my dick
How the fuck can humanity even beat the Combine? Their resources span realities and they’ve got nothing but time. Annoy them to death so they give up?
They do not possess intradimensional teleportation tech. And they need open portals. Essentially, what happens at the end of Episode 2 (and Alyx) means that what is on Earth is the only remaining Combine forces unless they can open a portal again.
HL2 was a mistake.
with the gift of hindsight I would have sent marines to, among other things, assist the scientists with launching the satellite early in the invasion to close our side of the rift, evacuate noncritical personnel and provide support and defense to the lambda complex while they spin up the portal so gordon and his team of HECU buddies can go ice the nihilanth
if this is done in a timely manner the portal storms that weakened earths defenses prior to the combine's arrival wouldn't happen and we'd stand a better chance against them. also if black mesa isn't destroyed we might be able to use the lambda complex to pinch off the combine's string based portal like a log
Knowing from the future, prepare a war against the Combine and extend the Seven Hour war for at least another hour and a half..
If going by the original story here
If it happened according to the avove story, the only option is to stick a row of nukes in the outskirts of all the major cities and the moment the towers appear detonate, it's the only way..
Also useful in case a city became headcrab zombie chow
But yeah if every single Combine Tower got toppled .5 seconds after appearing the Combine might just decide Earth is too crazy to bother with.
Why dont the combine have helmets that protect from headcrabs? Even just a spike on the top would suffice
>Combine with Soviet gas masks and WW1 German Pickelhaube
fund it
yeah it is pretty stupid how helpless everybody are against the headhumpers. It is not like they had not thought about it. In Alyx during the vodka factory the scavenger she saves is wearing a makeshift spiked helmet
