Terror bombings have never worked and the political class won't give a shit how much the populace is inconvenienced during war time. Taking out the troop formations and logistics hubs with tactical nukes would be more effective.

People talk about Russia balkanizing, but how would that affect their nuclear stockpiles? Even if none of their ballistic missiles worked, they still could be taken apart and used as payloads for dirty bombs. What would NATO do to counter this? Would they go full on CoD4 and attempt to secure these nukes with specops guys or would they try to get chummy with the new administration?

It was split up between the states that inherited the silos.
Then countries like Ukraine were lured into giving them up under false promises.

          It has already happened once.

Ukraine had most of the USSR's missile stockpile but they gave it to the newly formed Russian Federation in exchange for security assurances from them and the US and other countries.

If Russia balkanizes again I'd expect something similar to occur.

Balkanization is strategically necessary to slow inevitable respawning (Russia is after all an enemy culture hence incapable of reform in any Western sense). Smaller states have more reason to sell off their inventory to the UN in return for economic aid.

It’s funny, the original just has a Ukie slitting the throat of a crying Z wojak while this one has a Z slitting the throat of a severely mutilated (eyes gouged out with nails, screw driver in head) and vilified (azov patch and hook nose) Ukie. It really illustrates the inept, pointless, and inhumane barbarism the Russians want to, and have, perpetrated against the Ukrainians, i.e. the people they invaded for no reason other than to kill. Not even the representation of the Ukie slitting the throat of the invader showed this level of contempt and dehumanization for their foe.

Reduce strength in Kherson to maintaining a territorial defense force and a defensive line along the Dnipro (which by definition can be far smaller than the one needed to maintain a defense against a land threat). Shunt the offensive manpower surplus and material present west of the river to the southern and eastern fronts.

If I had to guess, the next significant Ukrainian thrusts will be southward towards Melitopol, Mariupol, and possibly Crimea. Those have the greatest potential for encirclement and would be against forces significantly less dug-in than those in the Donbas.

To secure that foothold they now have to continuously send troops and material over the river under threat of Russian air and artillery strikes. Russia itself could maintain a foothold that it won with the aid of surprise so how would the Ukies manage it when the Russians expect them.

As much as people laughed at the Chornobaivka series, it was the significant reason why Russia held on the right bank so long as it did, and why they kept using it even when repeatedly shelled. It was the only usable airfield in the region, and within a stone's throw from Crimean airports. For Ukraine to move men, armor and supplies to the left bank without a similar asset there would be incomparably harder.

The Russians are already dug in across the river, especially across the one viable bridge left.

Destroying bridges is a double edged sword. You impede the enemy's movements, but also your own.

The big reason the Ukrainians were able to storm across the Oskil river in Kharkiv so easily was because the Oskil was well behind the lines and the Russians didn't have the opportunity to destroy or close off many of the crossings.

        Anonymous

Do you understand how hard it is to establish a bridge head across a water barrier? Especially a big one like the Dnieper?

The Ukies can make better use of their troops by pushing towards Melitopol thorough Zaphorizia (I think that’s how you spell it) oblast.

Most likely Ukraine will focus on the Zaporizhzhia area. Retaking it fully would effectively cut Russian forces in half and the Crimean bridge could be hit quite frequently from there. Russian forces to the west would be effectively starving with no other choice than to withdraw to Crimea. From that point on Ukraine will either focus on Crimea or Donetsk/Luhansk first.

Ukraine has a massive cleanup job on the right bank now, it will keep a fair number of troops busy for awhile. Lots of donated tanks to r&r, lots of mines to remove, etc. I expect there to be a pause there for a few months and the focus to drive from Pavlivka to Melitopol.

Establish territorial control up to the bank, dig in and fortify, leave a loyal garrison force in the Kherson region, then relocate most of the units and assets to another front.
Say, somewhere in Zaporizhzhia. Push down from the north, cut lines of communication to Enerhodar (and that fricking NPP), and then tactically sprint hell for leather at Melitopol.
This action will cause Russia's theater commander to slam fist on panic alarm and route everything to Melitopol because if they lose that city, Crimea loses their last reliable logistical route.

Seems dumb to stop at a river when you have the momentum. Wouldn't allowing the vatnigs dig in along a natural defensive barrier just make things more difficult in the future?

Attacking a fortified defensive line in near-uncontested territory is already difficult enough, but having to factor in a deep river in front of it that necessitates an amphibious offensive operation too; this is a recipe to lose a frickton of units and assets for a lot less territory than was worth the investment.
Especially with a river that can be surged if the defensive line is about to completely collapse, thus wiping out both the victorious attackers and the routing defenders. (Take note of local topography in this regard.)
Comparatively, fixing one's own defensive line, stationing enough defenders and artillery assets in local to make assaulting it exponentially more trouble than worthwhile, and then relocating the rest to another axis of attack is far more positive of an action.
And in the scenario above this reply, cutting off LOC to Enerhodar and every LOC going through Melitopol means the defensive line on the opposing side of the river withers away because logistical failscade.

Aside from the wholesomeness of liberation videos, the liberation of villages in the Izyum and Karkiv videos was probably the most telling videos of how bad its got for Russia. The far east of Ukraine was meant to extremely pro-Russia part of the country who would welcome the Ukrainians with open arms. However when they liberated the cities, you had videos of young boys saluting soldiers, Ukranian grandmothers running out to hug and kiss the soldiers, giving them warm tea and food and people clapping in the streets. The fact that THESE people, who in all honestly are ethnically Russian (not a justifaction for the invasion btw) were spitting on Russian soldiers while worshipping their own troops proves that even if Ukraine collapsed tomorrow, NOTHING could be won from it.

I hope they do blow it because dambusting is kino as frick.

While vatniks exaggerate it would be easy for the Russian Federation to sustain tens of millions of casualties since their economy is based on resource extraction and bugs will buy all they can produce if it can be delivered (at their prices of course).

The same reason African populations are unaffected by war applies to Vatfrica and that is there are no lower level players who matter. Russia cannot zerg rush and win but it can bleed off useless people as cannon fodder without social impact. Babushkas are mostly eager to send their birth control failures off to glory as a Lada or bag of oats is more useful than another drunk clogging the floor.

The moment to blow the HPP would be either after a successful amphibious assault on the opposing bank downstream, or if/when Ukraine breaks the land bridge to Crimea.
Destroying it prior to that means everything that is not military in Crimea is doomed to either evacuate or perish. At least it's winter, so drinkable water isn't as difficult to acquire as compared to a scorching summer, but the point remains.

        >this seems like an ordered retreat
Pretty sure the Ukrainians agreed to let the Russians retreat to avoid a bloody fight for kherson city. The wierd scripted televised announcement of the retreat was probably part of the deal, that the Russians admit on TV that this was a retreat not a feint or goodwill. Probably also included things like maps of minefields to be handed over at some defined point.

We will return to Herson next spring, you'll all see. After that, Nikolaev and Odessa, then Tiraspol. And to Harkov we will return and liberate it from nazis. This is hilarious. There's absolutely no panic

    >The Armed Forces of Ukraine can take advantage of the situation and create a group of 20-30 thousand people, which would start moving directly to Moscow. Due to the effect of surprise, it is quite possible to break into Belgorod, Kursk, Orel or Bryansk in one night. In 7-8 hours, a column of military equipment, if it crosses the border in the Glukhov region, will reach the capital at a speed of 70 kilometers per hour. Parts of the Armed Forces of Ukraine can even cut several strategic highways - from Smolensk to Ryazan, and then go to the Moscow Ring Road and even slip through to the Kremlin.
