Letting a “no” stand would represent a loss of legitimacy for Ankara and by consequence, China gaining a foothold in Europe

NTA but the US doesn't operate on 19th century geopolitics like Russia or Xi's China. It has the capacity to completely wipe Turkey off the map or orchestrate a regime change, but it would be incredibly counterproductive to give "america bad" types more ammunition because they attacked a third party over a replaceable unmanned drone.

“America bad” talking points will continue to be propagated by Russian aligned threat actors in the information space regardless of a given days newsfeed

Ankara already threw a monkeywrench into the nearly unanimous support everyone has for Finland and Sweden joining NATO

Now they want to extract concessions for themselves to remove the obstacle they created for progress

This is akin to tribal land politics, where tribal leaders will block rail or road access on old easements, then demand money from the state to remove the roadblock

This type of activity will not be tolerated at a geopolitical level, if it interferes with vital containment operations for Russian aggression

Consider the fact that even moderates and mainstream outlets were arguing that there was no Ukraine invasion planned, it was more or less because
                >muh Iraq war. R-remember where da dubyaemdees!!1! Can't trust them glowies man!
The fact of the matter is that the US is in an incredibly comfortable position and an unmanned drone being taken out isn't likely to generate outrage in the American public which would necessitate a response. There's no reason to risk a favorable position by even requesting that we move some fleets into the Black Sea. The calculus of modern geopolitics is determined by how trustworthy of a partner you are and how lucrative trade with your country is. Chest-beating and vassal collecting is outdated and ultimately more expensive than the alternative.

The US took Iraq which made similar boasts and completely toppled it within months to the point at which the idea of a strong Iraqi government has just disappeared. When someone says the US could wipe Turkey off the map, it's not really an insult to Turkey (which probably could fend off an invasion from literally anyone else), it's a testament to how roided out the US is. The only question would be whether it could be justified to the American public. Luckily for both Turkey and the US, neither country wants to antagonize the other too much.

The Russian jet didn't simply shoot the drone down because it would be against the rules, which is why it played aerial harassment games with it instead until this either happened by accident or in a way that looked enough like an accident to be deniable.
