Your equation for a happy jap is glaringly deficient in civilian rapes and fake surrenders, run those numbers again anon.

The Japanese stationed on the islands has already overfished the nearby waters.
Japan had spent decades overfishing everywhere it could get to. Those were the days before any limits on what they could do or take.

      >Tokyo Express
A horrifically inefficient method of moving supplies. When accounting for the dashes needed and the fact that half the barrels destroyers dropped off were lost, the cost to deliver a single barrel of rice to Guadalcanal was roughly three tons of oil. For a nation still struggling to satisfy its fuel requirements, that was an absurdly bad cost.

Everyone doesn't know how to fish.

They tried. I remember an anecdote where IJA soldiers risked life and limb trying to scavenge sweet potatoes and sugar cane at Okinawa. They'd consider it a success when they could gather some food when only a few guys died from naval gunfire or strafing runs from aircraft. Despite the depravity and atrocities committed by the Japanese, I feel bad for the bastards who had to endure that.

Why didn't they eat the dead?

If you'd actually read any of the accounts from Guadalcanal, the Japs ate pretty much anything they came across, including their own when it got bad enough.

Birds, lizards, plants, insects, roots, anything you can think of really.

Problem is that if you're not native to the environment and you know frick all about how to actually catch and trap stuff, you're pretty fricking useless at getting food even in a jungle.

Also coastline is patrolled by american aircraft and ships and fishing takes all day while you still have a frontline to hold.

There was a mention of how the shittiest, worst K-ration can of dogmeat-pudding from bumfrick Alabama meat packing plant or whatever, that was hated by the GI's were pure fricking luxury to any Jap soldier that came across it.

As a result of the rivalry between the IJN and the IJA, fishing licenses were exclusively reserved for naval personnel.
