It's so that they can have missile cells without taking up space under the deck like VLS cells. Personally I think it's a skill issue on the part of Soviet naval architects and missile designers.

Russia's naval strategy has always involved putting the largest anti-ship missiles humanly possible on everything that floats. Western countries generally stopped doing that after the 1960s and switched to air delivery.

It's the naval equivalent of holding a grenade in both hands in case of a drone attack

Those are tubes for giant ass anti-ship missiles.

The Soviet Union figured that individual warships would have marginal survivability against the larger US Navy, so they optimized most of their surface combatants to be nitroglycerin dossed glass cannons that would unload all their missiles (possibly nuclear tipped) at US Carriers and hope for the best. That's not a *bad* tactic persay in the deep Pacific or Atlantic, but it's pretty risky if you're in shallow waters where non-warship opponents can sneak up on you.

    >every fricking ship is full of comically large anti-ship missiles because we will fight muh carrier strike groups
    >ends up fighting a country with no navy
    >carrier-killer missiles go booom every time your ships sustain damage

    >focus on heavy air superiority fighters, developing almost no SEAD capabilities because we will fight muh USAF
    >ends up fighting country with almost no air force
    >unable to achieve an air superiority after 2 years of active conflict

    Why are they like this?

Eh, that's actually not that moronic. Cold War NATO SAMs weren't that good and NATO didn't have a lot of them (as NATO has an air-centric doctrine). As a result, SEAD was less of an issue compared to stopping NATO air assets, for which the Soviets had a metric shitload of pretty decent SAMs and the aforementioned heavy air superiority fighters. Now they face an opponent with the same AA spam approach, but they can't SEAD, so they have no way of getting air superiority (not that they had any chance against NATO).

Basically, the Soviet AA spam doctrine works against a superior air force (such as the Russian one in this conflict) and the Russians don't have anything that can counter it. As a result, Ukraine continues to cuck the Russian VKS.

Dialectics. The navy and BBCPOCCNN being like that is the thesis, a country with almost no air force or navy is the anti-thesis.
