Writing a novel, could use insight

Fa/tg/uy here attempting to write a military scifi novel. I'm 30k words in and realizing most of my comms chatter could use work. To that end, I have the following questions:

1. What would be the proper back and forth between tower and aircraft when there's incoming bombers and most of the base's squadron is scrambling? I'd like to be somewhat close to reality as it helps to show the MC has actually been paying attention during flight school.
2. How common are AWACS in aerial sorties? If I went by Ace Combat they're always around, but that feels off for some reason.
3. If size/weight wasn't an issue, what kind of gun would you put on something like the Darkstar? Could it even have weapons while going Mach 10?

Some things about the setting the story is in if any of you care:
>Traditional aliens invade plot with humans stealing their tech to survive and force a stalemate
>Said tech means there's sentient AI in anthropomorphic proxies of actual aircraft called "Air-Cores"
>Aside from being a great motivator to get men to sign up for the service, Air-Cores can assimilate weaponry and replicate it on the fly as needed to a certain degree. Nukes are the only exception.
>Each Air-Core can only bond with a single pilot during their operational lifetime. A single pilot can have multiple bonded units but it's practically unheard of
>Civilian MC ends up with an experimental Air-Core based on pic-related by accident
>Shenanigans ensue

I can post the Setting Bible and world building on the aliens if anyone is interested. Or just let me know if this is all pants on head idiocy.

Very boring and terse. Listen to real ATC communications, and imagine those but with some extra military jargon mixed in. Also half of it is completely unintelligible to people who aren't in aviation circles.

If the tower is scrambling jets their main concern is getting them up in the air as fast as possible without having any of them crash into each other on the runway or in the air. You might be able to find military air traffic control audio from YouTube from some exercises. Also, there's some great desert storm audio out there.

Here's audio/video of an F16 pilot dodging 6 SAMs in Iraq. Extremely professional but you can hear the stress, plus he's pulling extreme Gs and trying to talk with the chest compression. Aviators, as a rule, don't really frick around on the radio and they have an extremely particular lingo.

Depends. Are you America? Every modern force on force aerial engagement starts with AWACS vectoring fighters to respond to an unknown contact. Are you literally anyone else? Either hope America lets you borrow an AWACS or you were lucky enough to have one assigned to your mission to vector you in. It will not be as good as its American counterpart, and will probably go down shortly after contact.
      >3.
I wouldn't. Missiles are better, especially if size and weight aren't an issue. Are we abandoning missiles because your air-cores can absorb them? Then we're making airburst A2A missiles that shower them with frag and telling the aliens to suck dick. We had fighter-launched A2A nuclear missiles in the Cold War, you bet we would do break out a modernized equivalent in a heartbeat against xenos scum. Might even give them some form of guidance this time.

AWACS ahoy for all ops, got it. Air-Cores can't absorb missile attacks but they can produce plenty of missiles to fire off. It was my solution to how to emulate the arcade shooter feel of Ace Combat where you somehow have 100+ missiles in your jet

      Do AWACS also have Air-Cores?

Some do. Air-Cores are meant to be rare and super on demand. That's why the MC getting one royally pisses off a bunch of aces who were waiting for their turn in the queue.

The launch profile involved immediately pulling a 70-90 degree bank and running away as fast as possible. You had twelve seconds from when the Genie left the rails to detonation.
It’s important to note that the USAF considered the Genie safe for use over populated areas, and it only had a 300m kill radius.

How did no one think about having them launch backwards? So you have fighters tailing you, and you launch one of these at them. No banking to give them away. No RWR.

In such an advanced scenario, you still think the pilot needs to talk to a goon in a tower lol

He would be talking to the AI in the wienerpit who's already aware of how the network is handling each plane in the attack force and the surrounding threats, and broadcasting information as required and communicating itself with the neural network in the satellites. In fact the AI can already fly the plane, but the pilot is needed for weapons release and to decide on some things that are too sensitive to be put on machine learning

    everything is coordinated without thinking.

      Anonymous

The AI in the wienerpit is the front end AI, written to communicate with a meat puppet
The AI handling the attack force is a processing cycle of the main AI
Weapons AI are downloaded when they are ready to shoot, in a tiny fraction of a second, into multi-kill type weapons
The Main AI which is the war strategist is everywhere and nowwhere, able to flow through any node.
Itself is a module of the AI that runs the world, continously being written and rewritten with the most updated results.

The Pilot is the kill switch, the amygdala in case a more powerful engine has deciphered the moves, to add uncertainty and OTP

This shares nuggets of my thoughts on how one could split up an Air-Core AI and why pilots are needed. Especially the uncertainty bit. You put it much more succinctly than I would.

xenos aircrafts would not be able to compeat even with 80s cold war air tech
in 100 years humans nearly perfected aerial combat crafts for our atmosphere
best xenos would do is star wars fighters equvalents (tie fighter was 1200/km atmospheric speed) if you want it to be realistic that is
there are limits to phisics, there is no way a force shields (even if powered by micro nuclear energy suply) that could fit into jet sized craft , could protect against modern messiles , and anything strategic bomber size + can be destroyed by hypersonic gliders
check out terra invictab game if you want to see realistic xeno - earth war
xenos cant threat earth due to lack of logistics (best they can do is to mine sol planets and made kamikadze messiles and strike them at earth)
also the most efficient space fighter shape is cube (a spere is harder and more expensive to produce)

What I would recommend doing with this would be to slap a laser on it and use it to intercept satellites, ballistic missiles, and maybe low orbit spacecraft. Any physical weapons wouldn't really have a point since you would literally just out run them after launch, and it would just add unnecessary weight slowing you down. Engines putting out speeds that can get you to Mach 10 will also definitely be strong enough to power a laser as well.

Once an Air-Core is active it self-sustains until damaged or exceeds how many projectiles/bullets/etc. It can make from its stores of material. At that point you have to feed it raw materials for it to repurpose into things ranging from hull repair to missiles to circuitry.

So if your idea of lewds involve welding together the perfect blend of alloys into a "sandwich" that you then give her during a romantic picnic, then the answer is yes.

  24. 1 year ago
    Anonymous

If you want more realistic coms there's plenty of resources out there about it. For example:

What the guy talks about in the video is good enough in terms of "realism" for a novel.
AWACS will be around for most air forces if they can spare it, if it's NATO you'd be guaranteed to have one around. If they've been caught with their pants down AWACS might not be around, but for the most part some ground-based equivalent will be.
No guns, or at the most something like a 20 mm or 30 mm gun. Guns are a last resort these days. A hypersonic plane would likely be armed with missiles, weapons release at those speeds is problematic due to aerodynamics but I'd just handwave it away. If you're going for more of a sci-fi feel you could do what ever other writer does and chuck a railgun on it but bear in mind this isn't really a realistic proposition. Anyone saying lasers is moronic, the shockwaves around the aircraft would diffract the laser to shit. They wouldn't work.

Bring out a paper which says they'd go straight through at any and all airspeeds. I'm waiting. Not to mention at the very least you'd get your laser refracted in god knows what direction dependent on your airspeed what with the sudden jumps in density.
