Wouldn't this thing fucking suck?

What's the point of adding dumb shit like barbed wire or nails to a blunt force weapon? All that's going to achieve is getting it stuck everywhere.

This was back when the phrase was just an innocuous Boomerism

Often the point is to make it look scarier, most conflicts are resolved without violence through intimidation alone.

Weapons in the walking dead are purely aesthetic choices made to suit each character, no matter how moronic it is in context. Not only that, but how effective they are is purely dependant on what the writers feel like, which is why dozens of men armed with full-auto ARs regularly get ripped to shreds by zombies while a single black chick with a wall hanger katana can wipe out the same amount with relative ease

    >Barbed wire
Against a human it adds the ability to lacerate, makes it more likely to tear open the skin, and thus turns what might have been an inconsequential glance into a serious injury. The uneven, biting surface creates a kind of griping effect, making it less likely you'll glance off, at least without tearing a chunk out of them. Barbed wire means that in a bad situation it makes it much more difficult for the weapon to be grabbed and restrained. It lets you more reliably do damage if you don't hit squarely or have to choke up on the bat to hit at close range.

    >Nail
Being stabbed and clubbed at the same time is worse than being clubbed. Also, you're much more likely to penetrate a skull.
Further, multiple nails means the bat is way less likely to glance off, even if a nail doesn't hit squarely they'll tend to "catch" like a bipod and redirect the force of a swing into the target.

Probably does a fair bit of making people less likely to take it away from you.

nta but the nail bat is the same design concept as a lucerne hammer, replacing a flat bludgeoning head or a single spike with multiple spikes protruding in different directions has the effect of catching material instead of glancing off of it

In a post apocalyptic world without modern medicine it'd be good against other people, I don't think he ever cleans it so there's all sort of gross stuff that could get into a wound. And if your thing is executing people with a bat you don't want anyone grabbing it.

    >What's the point
I caught that pun, even though you don't seem clever enough to have done it on purpose.

Pulling metal spikes out of a skull is a fairly trivial effort, not like a gag in a Hollywood zombie movie. In olden times, they made great can openers for people wearing armor ... which is where the concept was developed and why it flourished for centuries.

Barbed wire wrapped around a baseball bat is some sort of recent zoomer fantasy look-at-edgy-me LARP. Although, it would do a superior job of removing large chunks of flesh and adding significant bleedout to blunt force trauma.

I don't think it's as moronic as you might think. A tight wire wrap is going to strengthen it and winding it together near the top will be like ghetto steel banding hardening the impact point and adding more mass. It's simultaneously a smaller area of impact for transferring force while the barbs will bite into whatever you hit enough to potentially save it from sliding or glancing on a less than perfect hit again for transfer of force but without getting stuck like an axe or machete or something might which is very relevant for zombies. The barbed wire will also dig into the wood so it won't work loose over time. Negan was a gym teacher so he's probably very used to swinging a bat.

On top of everything Negan is a showman and it's very distinctive and intimidating

They're mostly for style in media because baseball bats are cool, but they're clearly based on improvised WWI trench clubs.

The nails are not necessarily supposed to be lightweight wood nails, but heavy-duty hobnails that are pounded in to add mass and concentrate force.

The barbed wire is wrapped tightly around the head to hold the wood together and prevent it from splitting apart. It also has the benefit of adding more weight of metal. They used barbed wire because it looks more intimidating and that's what was available.

The barbed wire is mainly for intimidation but combined with force it would rip and tear but not get stuck. It is useful in a terrible way

The barbed wire would just tend to pad the blow making it less deadly I think. A bat aint a bad club though. The thorns on this Shell-lay-lee look cool but I'd probably want one with them smoothed over.
