Would you wear ear protection if you were in a home invasion scenario?

Would you wear ear protection if you were in a home invasion scenario? If it happened to turn into an extended gunfight, you'd probably have lost your hearing without it, which would obviously be quite disadvantageous. It doesn't take that long to put on, if you have time to get a weapon out of a safe, you have time to put earpro on.

I keep electronic ear muffs with my rifle next to my bed at night. I’d put them on if I had time but it wouldn’t be my priority.
    Still waiting on my suppressor…

      This.

My house is big enough that I reckon I'd have time to gear up well before anyone makes it to my bedroom, hell, with the security film/alarms/barberry hedging protecting the windows I'd probably be able to gear up before they've even finished climbing inside.

Recently bought a couple of sets of spare Howard Leights to leave downstairs in the event that somebody tries to break in during the day. They're cheap enough that it seemed worth it.

unless your rifle is a pcc, and you are king charles with a bedroom the size of a small mansion you will still lose your hearing rapid firing without earpro

If I thought I had the time to fumble with them, yeah. But my ears and long guns are also kept next to each other, so it's just one minor step if I'm grabbing the rifle.

No and this is moronic. If you lost your hearing from one gun fight literally no veteran who saw combat before 9/11 would have any hearing. Pistols in doors are less damaging than rifles outdoors, I can tell you that from experience.

      Well, like

If I thought I had the time to fumble with them, yeah. But my ears and long guns are also kept next to each other, so it's just one minor step if I'm grabbing the rifle.

, rifles are a pretty common choice for home defense. See if you have hearing after firing one off indoors. Secondly, I'm not saying you're going to guaranteed to permanently lose your hearing. I'm saying your hearing would be almost entirely gone temporarily, so you're going through a gunfight without one of your senses.

Still moronic, people have been using shotguns for home defense for ever and there hasn't been cases of people going permanent deaf afterward.
I've been <10 feet away from a 20mm firing without hearing protection and still the only permanent hearing damage I have is from 5.56 (I can't hear certain high frequencies in my right ear).

Sure if you know there will be a peaceful protest near your neighborhood in advance, put them in/on, but if it's a bump in the night don't bother, it's a wash of time.

Permanent hearing damage is not the same as going deaf you tard. No matter what you say or think, firing a rifle indoors does damage your hearing. Doesn’t mean you can’t live a normal life and you might not even notice for decades, but it does damage it. Why even risk it if you have an alternative?

I'll tell you this much, it's not that big an issue. I've shot plenty without earpro and only have a 30% decrease on right ear, 70% on the left and severe tinnitus.

    >Would you wear ear protection if you were in a home invasion scenario?

So what. Living with tinnitus is better than being dead or having all your shit stolen like a cuck
    >which would obviously be quite disadvantageous.
    Your hearing adapts to that
    >It doesn't take that long to put on, if you have time to get a weapon out of a safe, you have time to put earpro on.

You might not even have time for that. Keep guns in a safe is stupid. When I had an actual home invasion, the time between being woken up and engaging the threat was less than 3 seconds. Keeping a safe ans putting on a safe, assumes you have at least 30 seconds, which is a very long time in a high adrenaline scenarios

Furthermore, what’s this neo-fuddlore that wearing hearing protection will turn a self defense case into a murder? Can you show me one case of this ever happening? Of course you can’t. Can you even show me one case where the gun made the difference between self defense and prosecution? No you can’t either. Because I’ve been asking that for a decade and haven’t found anything on my own or from others.

No, my place is too small to bother with safes, or earmuffs. If the hopped up state troopen shoot me, they were probably going to shoot me either way.
Hopefully one of my brothers sees to them later.
I end up having to grab my carbine and go outside in the middle of the night to deal with animals often, I dont frick with anything like that.

I've shot without earpro a few dozen times, always outside though, no damage I've noticed. It's annoying when you have proper earpro with an external mic and no one else can hear you whispering because they have foam plugs or oldschool muffs.

  10. 11 months ago

100% would wear ear pro. I have my door reinforced with a bar when I'm sleeping. There's no quick entry in to my home. Anyone entering will have to destroy the door or smash a reinforced window and climb through to get in. Either of these options are extremely loud and and time consuming so it will give me plenty of time to take 5 seconds to put ear pro on.

Anyone stating otherwise has a poorly secured home and needs to go work on reinforcing their entrances.

I use .45 ACP, so it's subsonic. Better for ears.
Do you think a suppressor or silencer would be good to add for home defense?

morons in this thread literally do not have any early warning or deterrence measures in their home. Definitely smelly apartment-renters whose bed is in view of the front door and who don't care about life anyways. Why would you not amplify and protect your hearing? You can position someone by footsteps and whispering anywhere in your house and not go deaf if you shoot.

    >it takes too long

Just go try it. Put your rifle next to your bed and your earpro on it. Put it on your head and push the button. It takes no time whatsoever. You are adding two seconds to gain a huge advantage. Home invaders aren't sprinting into your bedroom. They don't know where it is.

    >Prosecution will say you had too much time before shooting because you stopped to put on ears

Yet Castle Doctrine is still in effect. If you have Castle Doctrine, it doesn't matter. If you don't, you can't shoot anyways.

    >I don't have amplified ear pro

    You're broke and gay

      >You are adding two seconds to gain a huge advantage. Home invaders aren't sprinting into your bedroom.

You're assuming that they come in through the front door rather than a window. I had a home invasion at 3am on the 2 floor window of my bedroom. I absolutely did not have time to put on ear pro before responding to the threat, not did I care.

1 to 4 gunshots aren't gonna make you go permanently deaf.

Why did you choose to live where home invasions are a thing AND not have bars and alarms and security doors and fencing and doggos?

          >Why did you choose to live where home invasions are a thing

          >not have bars and alarms and security doors and fencing and doggos?
          Because I was renting

You can take advice from people who actually have experienced a home invasion or from self defense LARPers, idc. I'm just saying that shit happens faster than you expect, and you don't wanna be fumbling with shit when you don't need to.

        >I had a home invasion at 3am on the 2 floor window of my bedroom
Was your window unlocked? Or did they smash through it?

If it’s unlocked that’s your fault. If they smashed a 2nd story window that’s a one in a million chance.

          >If it’s unlocked that’s your fault.

It was old apartment and the windows didn't lock. Again, it's fun to theorize about what you'll do, but in that situation your first reaction is to grab a weapon and try to deter the threat. I didn't even actually shoot the guy because it was my drunk neighbor breaking into the wrong room because he locked himself out.

At no point in the 5-10 seconds of the whole interaction did I think about earpro. I was trying to ID the person before I shot. I'm not saying using earpro is a bad idea, or will even get you killed. I'm just pointing out that when shit actually hits the fan, your lizard brain will make probably protecting your hearing a much lower priority than you expect.

      >Prosecution will say you had too much time before shooting because you stopped to put on ears
Just take them off. It’s that simple. It’ll take the cops over 10 minutes on average to get there. 5 minutes would be extraordinarily fast, and that clock starts after you call.

For those of you with bolder proclivities, you can take the same approach with a suppressor or a whole upper (or gun) for that matter. Keep a cheap upper in the same length, twist rate, and caliber that hasn’t been cleaned and swap it with your expensive one. Have a $3000 Benelli M4? Oops looks like you had a maverick 88 with the same shells in the closet. They will literally never know unless you tell them or you’re on camera. Forensic ballistics is pseudoscience anyways.

Ofc, ecolocalization is meta in urban combat, knowing where the enemy is, what they are saying and everything in between before making contact is extremely valuable.
Also my room has 2 exits leading to north and southern side of the home, if I know where they are I can make better decisions on the go.
