I mean you could use it but you'd probably be using a caliber where the extra magnification wouldn't mean much. 8" 556 is just super gay.

      But 300 blk isn't.

I mean I’m assuming you’re referring to an 8” AR. If so no I wouldn’t. In fact running an AR at that length is pretty stupid as you lose all of the ballistic advantage 5.56 has to offer. You’re honestly unlikely to really be able to practically use your rifle past 100 yards. I’d just stick to the Aimpoint or honestly if I was you’d I’d invest in a reflex like an EOtechI find they’re easier to use in close in shooting.

    HOWEVER

If you’re referring to an 8” AR in 300Blk or a short AK pattern rifle then yes i’d say 3x isn’t going to be overkill since they retain their ballistic trajectory and velocity better.

How about a krink in 5.45? Would you say a 3x primary arms microprism would be suitable?

        Anonymous

5.45 is closer to 5.56 ballistically than it is .to 300 black or 7.62 X 39.

It relies on velocity like 5.56 so its going to suck out of an 8 inch barrel.

If you only ever shoot at paper or painted targets on a contrasting background you aren't likely to see the value of magnification. However, when looking for obscured targets or fine detail 3x mag will be useful even at 100y let alone further out. If you have decided you need it, then use it. It's that simple.

If I'm shooting past 150 yards I'd want some magnification. In 10 years I'll probably want magnification at 50 lol. Getting old sucks.

homie if you are living like kazinsky you should have something with an 18 to 24 inch barrel and a 3-15x scope
SBRs are for larpers who think cqb is cool cause of video games. But if you actually think you are going to do cqb and not get clapped you are moronic.

20" rifles are strictly preferred by people who don't shoot. Have fun maneuvering that gun around in your cabin, in the woods, in your truck as you drive around the property or during target transitions.

homie have you never been hunting? You just proved that its you who doesn't shoot.
Sure if your gun is for home defense only a shorter barrel is fine but for property defense if you have a large property you should have a longer barrel and a more capable caliber than 5.56

yes buddy I do indeed hunt and outside of hunting I prefer shorter barrels

You said a 20 inch barrel is hard to maneuver in the fricking woods. Bro thats the most moronic shit
If you have a large wooded property with long ranges an 8 inch barrel is fricking moronic. If you have a yard that is over 500 yards you should have at least a 14.5 but preferably an 18 to 24 in a higher caliber like 6.5 creed or 308

I have multiple firearms. I even have an 11.5 AR for home defense. But if I had a large property I would not use my 11.5 for property defense I would use my Bergara HMR for that.

Ammo choice matters more. 20 inch 55 grain won't get you as far as 77 otm grain from a 16". Latter also has a similar BC to 308 and gets you a similar effective range of 700m. 308 can squeeze some more range more easily but even getting to 500 is up to whether OP has his fundamentals down and the skills necessary for shooting at such range.

Would you put a a 3x magnifier on a 8" SBR running an aimpoint?

8 inch is still too short for practical use with a 5.56, I'd consider at least a 12.5 if you want a compact barrel that can still perform out to a modest range but most importantly good ammo. 55 grain is nice but struggles past 300m. 77grain otm is preferable but more expensive.

If 8" is already what you have 3x can't hurt, I think magnification belongs on all rifles you intend to use outside the home in one way or another. Though you'll make the most of it with an adequate barrel length.

magnification is for outdoors yes but an 8 inch barrel isn't for outdoors at all IMO. You don't need such a compact rifle for outdoors.
I think if you have an 8 inch AR it should have a red dot on it and thats it cause its purpose-built for home defense and moving through doorways.

I don't like 8" for 5.56 either, but if it's what OP is stuck with the ability to look further and ID can't hurt.
Though too be fair if he has the money for an SBR and aimpoint he could afford a longer barrel. A decent barrel is $200 and even budget holosun magnifier will be that much.

Yea I would never go under 11 inches for an AR personally. And I think if you plan on shooting longer ranges where you would want magnification you should be using a longer barrel or a better caliber like 6.5 creed

For outdoor use I'd prefer at least 12.5 since you get a good bump in velocity compared to 11.5 but only a bit behind 14.5. For 5.56 with modern ammunition there isn't' much need for a long barrel.
As for 6.5 creed, imo it's not that useful compared to other common rounds until you're past 500m. Up until then 308 has more muzzle energy granted with a bit more trajectory. Out to 500, a 77 grain 5.56 can make hits with only one foot more drop than 308, and is moving with enough velocity for the otm to expand beyond the projectiles original diameter. But if you have the skill and a property large enough that engaging past 700m is a concern then 6.5 is preferable. For most people though, 5.56 will get you pretty far. I don't think enough people have a use case nor the skill to make a rifle optimized for 500+ meter be worthwhile.

For home defense or defense of property sure I don't think 6.5 is that useful.
But for defense of liberty I think more patriots being capable of dropping tyrants out at 800 plus yards would be more useful than everyone thinking they are going to slay in CQB doorkicking.

Yeah zoomers have no idea what it was like before the <20" AR-15s. People where just constantly banging their rifles around on everything and unable to move about reasonably. The reason gun ownership spiked so much with the introduction of the <20" AR-15s was because finally people could have a rifle they could carry from the bedroom closet to the front door without breaking 3 light fixtures.

Not to mention the improved accuracy that came from <20" barrels as with longer barrels of the past, people banged them on so many things that they actually bent the barrel destroying the rifle's accuracy. The AR-15 also saved auto insurance companies millions of dollars because it was very common at the time for people to unknowingly close their car door on their ludicrously unwieldy rifles and damaging the car door and B pillar.

People don't give Eugene Stoner enough credit. Sure he himself didn't have the vision to imagine a rifle with a <20" barrel, but it was his design that enabled the greatest gift to firearms since the invention of the cartridge.

Sorry OP but I’m going to Jack your thread cause I been thinking about this too. Been deciding on buying a LaRue mount and 3x mag for this size barrel AR, good idea?

Depends how important or difficult identifying camouflaged targets is for you in your environment. Me personally would like some magnification because it's very difficult to spot things in my wooded and brushy environment. Magnification helps quite a bit for me at least.
