Would this stop spall? -

Look, without you all sperging out about steel armor being shit (I know it is, it's all I can get), would one of these cut resistant balaclavas stop spall?

says it has level 4 puncture resistance to some European national standard I know nothing about.

No moron it will not. Instead of sinking even more money into your moronic purchase, buy NIJ certified ceramic plates for $150 ea
this will your armor will weigh less and you will not be forced to wear a sweaty balaclava so that your life-saving armor won't kill you

At the time I bought my plate there was literally no ceramic option in 11x14, at least not without spending a couple of grand. And yes, I measure 11x14 according to every measuring guide I could find and some help from /bag/. Speaking of, rip /bag/.

Just because steel armor is moronic for a large number of reasons doesn't mean that nothing in the universe could stop the almighty and hyper lethal power of a bullet fragment.

Spall is pretty much a mustard gas nuke, nothing can protect you from the fricking grim reaper that is spall, most American civil war deaths were caused by spall that amputated bloodlines for eternity, Oppenheimer wishes he invented spall as it would make him truly death incarnate

Just get a antispall/trauma pad sleeve or similar insert. You need to protect more than just your face and neck.

    No, it likely won't.
Especially not if a larger part of bullet glances off your plate

Steel is heavier than ceramic but protects poorer. There are no level IV steel plates, the level III steel plates weigh more than level IV ceramic plates. Level III steel plates have inconsistent performance against 5.56 FMJ out of long barrels, which is extremely common, the ones that stop it are, you guessed it, even heavier.

Because none of these problems are flashy or attention grabbing, everyone latches on to what might be the least important flaw: Steel plates cause the bullets that strike them to shatter, and the shards might stab into you ricocheting off the plate. This could be solved easily by someone with no technical skill, but absolutely nothing solves the weight-and-protection issue.

    >spall

You mean spatter or frag(mentation). It's annoying how ignorant people who say "spall" insist on remaining ignorant. Someone explains this every time we have a moron make another plate thread.

You can conceal steel plates marginally easier than ceramic because they're typically thinner

I've yet to see any evidence that bullet spatter off a plate can do any real harm. Sure, they can cut up a cardboard box and might draw a little blood but generally the fragments look way too small to carry the energy they'd need to do anything more than that. Just another case of /k/ wringing their hands over a problem that doesn't actually exist.

You can use fiberglass welding blankets. They're about $20 for a small one.

Ideally, wrap the plate with multiple layers and use fiberglass resin between the layers.

DIY armor can be made out of just the blankets (ZNA Productions has a video on it)

The resin smell never really goes away, and it makes a mess.

I would recommend saving up for a good plate, but if you absolutely positively must use steel, fiberglass and resin will prevent some fragmentation.

your method works sure, but steel isnt cheaper anymore.

Personally I find it hilarious that anyone is willing to wear steel plates. I think it should be encouraged. If you're too stupid to figure it out you deserve to wear them.
