As long as the muzzle velocity is below like 10km/s before drag it will, yeah. I suppose if we're assuming orbital railguns are feasible and commonplace the answer is because an orbital gunship constructed in orbit will destroy the Mammoth with it's own railguns. Alternative if Halo has no hard counter to modern stealth (and I'm not a Halo lore nerd so idk), just go in at tree top level and fire more fast, maneuvering missiles than the rail gun can deal with in the ~30 seconds it might have from detection to impact.

It is incredibly heavy for what it is, I agree. There's no reason for it to be armored in any meaningful capacity, and certainly no reason for it to operate in a direct fire role. A more realistic road mobile implementation might share more in common with the Patriot system than a single large vehicle.

          >There's no reason for it to be armored in any meaningful capacity
If you armor a SPAAG against autocannons and RPGs you can brrrrrt infantry with relative impunity

maybe really fancy future SPAAGs will be able to detect and brrrrap incoming RPGs, this is also a downside of laser point defense because using blinding weapons on troops is a big no no

Wierd that it's so heavy when everything else the UNSC builds might as well be armored with dark matter and helium considering how impossibly light their ships and tanks are.

The scorpion's four times the size of a normal MBT and weighs less than one, and the newer scorpion is more heavily armored and gunned, yet canonically lighter.

That's because even at its heaviest, the Scorpion has thin titanium armor that is barely adequate against autocannons. It's basically a funny-shaped M60 in protective and offensive punch, albeit one that can be airdropped at a moment's notice.

I've driven a 797F which is about 400 US tons loaded, and you'd be surprised how decent it is on shitty dirt roads and in the mud. The tires are massive to distribute the weight, and even when they do sink, they're so tall and broad that you can literally just spin and dig until you find a rock, then move off of that as a springboard. The suspension on a lot of the setups I worked with was also totally operable even if you sank like 5 feet deep into the mud.

Just use non-flammable gas in the tires

It's not like a big vroom-vrooms are bad, but this one in particular is, it's design is simply atrocious. Well, halo is a series for a brain dead mutt teens, so blatantly upscaling an ifv and then making it even worse just for fun would be exactly something you should expect from a developer of such a piece of garbage.

      >It's not like a big vroom-vrooms are bad
Okay vroomer. Post a good vroom-vroom then.

Too heavy to drive anywhere. The amount of power required to move that much mass alone is staggering. Now add in inclines of even 1 degree, bumps, and anything outside more or less compact, dry earth or stone and this thing would just sink into the ground.

While cool its just completely impractical and useless. Hell, they can't even move the TOG II out of the museum as it (at 80 tons) would deal huge damage to any road it drove on.

      TL:DR
Cool, but too heavy and would sink in anything softer than asphalt.

It's probably nuclear powered. In Halo they have miniature nuclear reactors mounted on Spartan power armor so they can probably also fit them on vehicles.

Everything on the Infinity was a propaganda project meant as dick measuring with the Sangheili, and specifically with the CAS Assault Carrier, but it fails on every level.
When I say dick measuring I mean literally, the Infinity is just a tiny bit longer than the CAS.

The Mammoth is literally "The Sangheili have Scarabs and that makes PP feel small". It's less practical and less effective than the already existing UNSC super-sized vehicles, which were themselves niche because trying to compete directly with the covenant by doing exactly what they were doing was always moronic. I'm not kidding slightly, it's just a pointless pissing match against their ostensible allies (and allies is being generous to the Humans, they were for all intents and purposes a Reservation/Protectorate state of the Sangheili after the war).

The worst part is that the Infinity actually came face to face with the one ship it was designed to equal in optimal conditions (said CAS was under-crewed dramatically, damaged, and mostly staffed with illiterate peasants and pirates, and it's support fleet was unshielded corvettes the covenant wouldn't even field for any front line duty in the war) and Infinity still pussyfooted around, avoiding a direct confrontation, fricking up, and then let the enemy escape after doing them tremendous damage.

Was it always meant to parade that gun or was it originally a mobile command vehicle with a side dish of big stick for strategic opportunities?

Also I don't get why we had a Navy dude running that thing instead of the armored ground force leader lady and why that laser designator couldn't be used with missiles launched from the Infinity (presumably valley-hiding) to begin with.

Don't play Halo. I assume it's meant to be used on planets that can't support normal human life? If so, the vehicle probably has full crew accommodations inside it, kinda like a bigger version of pic related. If it's meant to be a FOB on wheels then it sort of makes sense

Don't, it's awful and incredibly badly written. It's Avatar/Disney style writing and totally predictable from the first book of the 5 or 6 books in the series; I read it when it first came out (20+ years ago) and it was terrible then, it won't have improved with age. If you want all the good stuff, just get the art book, now that is fun.

That's another one that has similarly themed outlandishly large vehicles which most likely stems from the concept that space colonies would require something that can go over any kind of terrain or conditions and if humanity can get into space then no expense would be spared in designing and manufacturing them leading to larger sizes. Same with the ones that were in Alien or Starship Troopers even.

make sense in that they have high redundancy with plenty of spare parts, also lot of traction, I can imagine cool ways of crossing/climbing terrains with a futuristic version.

Also on a low-gravity moon with dense atmosphere you can build significantly bigger truck/aircraft, and lower-gravity would probably a more difficult terrain, hell it might even justify mecha.

Orbital bombardment mogs everything else in Halo so badly it isn't even funny. Every meaningful Covenant victory is won off the back of the fact that they are really good at just destroying planets from orbit. On the ground they frequently get their shit pushed in, and in the games at least, they are nothing special in fleet-to-fleet engagements.
So the "counter" to the Mammoth and indeed most weapons in Halo is to destroy all life and infrastructure on the planet from orbit.

      Anonymous

      >in the games at least, they are nothing special in fleet-to-fleet engagements.
Has there ever been a victorious naval battle by the UNSC depicted in the games? The games totally ignore the space aspect outside of Reach which went gigamoronic with the Covenant hypercarrier (which didn't even get a unique design).

It is very heavily implied that Earth's defences successfully fight off the small Covenant fleet that arrives at the start in 2 (as in they destroy it, they don't allow it to retreat aside from the Prophet of Regret's flagship)
And there is of course a small Human contingent as part of Shipmaster's fleet that defeats the Brutes in 3

Yeah, that's what I was arguing. You can't really say based on the games that the Covenant is so-so in space when we just don't see anything space-based in the games.

The covenant only generally "lost" ground engagements in a very limited sense, even against armies of nothing but jackals and grunts with the occasional Brute most ground victories for the UNSC were extremely costly.

I would understand it if he had some secret plan to sabotage the rings and NOT fire them or something but he wants to fire the rings. Bungie's writing was schizophrenic even at the best of times. Truth's character totally changes between 2 and 3. In 2 he comes off as a smart manipulator and not the fanatic he's in 3. Presumably his plan was to save his species by hiding in a shield installation or the Ark.
I suppose he was afraid of a Sangheili uprising with the destruction of 04, the Heretics and 'Vadamee being so influential. I feel they could've kept things under the lid for a couple weeks and then suicided.

The scrapped halo 2 story boards and forerunner data vault plot line tie everything together. Basically Truth believes in his own twisted version of the great journey, he eventually finds out the rings will kill all life in the galaxy but also finds out about the forerunner data vault which contains all of humanities lost history and it contained a dead genetic template for humanity to be reborn from. From this information he came to the conclusion that this is what it meant to make the great journey and ascend to god hood, because whats closer to being a god than being the genetic basis for all of your species and holding all of the advanced information to make yourself a jesus figure? And in order to accomplish this he had to kill everything in the galaxy himself hence why in halo 3 he says gods must be strong. This line of thinking explains all of the seemingly nonsensical decisions he's been making such as passively killing off the other prophets, kicking out the elites and turning the brutes against them despite being horribly out numbered, and why he put all the eggs in one basket around earth.

Truth wanted the great journey all to himself. He willingly sacrificed the lives of millions all because of his selfish desire to become god of his species and potentially other species. Frick this homosexual and frick bungie for cutting such a critical plot element.

I figured he knew it was all bullshit but was already too late in the game to back out. He already knew humans were the original forerunners and probably feared the elites weren't too far behind eventually figuring out the entire religion was a sham and they were killing the very beings they worshiped. I assume he opted for the Brutes because they would be easier to control, wouldn't ask too many questions, and if nothing else - the civil war could prolong the Great Journey from happening, giving him more time to come up with another excuse.

Yes. In my military deck I have cat 797 with 2xoto 76mm naval over deck and radar.
    It's off-road speed is 40mph
It's fording depth means it can cross all rivers, (then pull a bailey bridge) and even roll off ships and wade to shore in some scenarios.
Being that it can also carry 400tons, means it works as a landing craft or river barge for armour / supplies.
It's wheels being maluable yet resistant and costing only 50k, can clear a minefield for columns to follow.
Or have it drag a roller and clear 1000s of acres per day.
Even simpler load the bucket with water, and dump it into enemy trench. Or attach a 12ft deep X 12 ft wide plough and tear up entrenched posistions, it will pull up concrete emplacements like weeds with 4000 hp.

The open frame structure and thick steel means hitting it with conventional shaped charges will cut a hole, but it could be "poked" hundreds of times and be fine. It's not an armoured box with juicy inards every existing weapon is designed to get to. Conventional weapons just aren't designed to deal with it. And at only 5m dollars each, opfor if going to have to expend 10-100x to remove it.
All that being said, What works at 5m ea, the military would probably frick up make it cost 500m and perform worse

It's too bad that there were no Halo games after Reach. Halo used to be the whole reason people bought an Xbox

Now there's zero reason to keep up with the Xbox with MCC on PC and it's modding functionality taking off.

Anything after reach isn't halo. It's funko pop cape shit written by a comic book writer.
It's stale and old. Let it die already.

i forgot how fricking big that thing actually is. look at the warthog next to it. it's a shame they only used this in one mission and it wasn't even for that long

It is only practical in some battletech future where having a mobile base is important enough because you can patrol an entire planet with four mechs and you have several trucks and months worth if supplies you need to move around with your tiny military force for a long time between dropship resupply.

I just want a game where you play as a high speed low drag Elite that turns invisible and assassinates a bunch of dudes like Ezio from Assassins Creed

we already have vehicles like that and the military doesn't use them, so draw your own conclusion morono.

a vehicle like that is for hauling cargo and it's always cheaper to do it by train or ship than by truck. the only reason you'd use a truck that large instead of just building a railway (no matter how shitty of a railway it's always gonna be better than a truck) would be if the source and/or destination of what you were hauling was constantly changing.

    like on a mine site.

AND the environment in which you were DOING the hauling was very, VERY permissive, i.e. all vegetation removed and surfaces levelled.

    like on a mine site.

which is why vehicles like that tend to only get used

    on a mine site.

i could see a vehicle like that being useful for expeditions in certain terrain (there's some precedent for that here on earth) but the military doesn't do that shit, it's more of a science thing. military is more likely to just fly there because they have the budget and logistics to support aerial ops.

I could see it being useful as a mobile base on a low gravity rocky planet like Mars.
