i got it to work by having the bottle be only half full, though that does make it have less power
What about using a tiny bit of double sided scotch tape to affix the Mentos to the bottom of the cap? Then screw the cap on gently, and pound the top of the cap with your fist to get the Mentos to fall from the weak tape?
OR, you could use a bit more scotch tape to affix the mentos to the bottom of the cap and then use a shit ton of duct tape to wrap the cap to the bottle as tightly as possible. Then when you throw it, when it bounces off the ground that should be enough to dislodge the mentos from the scotch tape.
