Would any modern nations be able to fully mobilize like they were able to during WW2 for WW3?

Would any modern nations be able to fully mobilize like they were able to during WW2 for WW3? Our reserves are too small to even supplement the understrength BCTs and constriction isn’t even an option for America since most of the population is unfit to be soldiers.

Most of the population in WW1 was unfit to be soldiers. The whole reason Physical Education was made mandatory in schools was because industrial society had bred a generation of boys that weren't naturally fit from daily physical labor. Still didn't stop them from sending them off to war. Luckily next time around we may even get to see some of the girls get a chance at playing meat shield.

You also have to deal with Gen Z and millennials saying fine I'll just go to jail if the draft ever came for them.

Millennials and Gen Z are very anti war and individualism, draft dodging has always been an issue. It be magnitudes worse than Vietnam.

Nothing a little bit of oppression cant solve. Anti war pussies do not even have guns so they can't fight back.

You don't get it anon. Vietnam was a very unpopular war and draft dodgers were still looked down upon by society. In current year the US would only institute the draft for a defensive war in which case the public attitude would be more similar to WW2, and conscientious objectors from WW2 were considered lower than pedophiles.

The thing is that modern war has completely changed to where that kind of mass conscription is not only unnecessary outside of the most dire of times, but can be downright detrimental, case in point Russia. A smaller, more professional and well trained force capable of launching unfathomably precise destruction from halfway across the globe is much more important nowadays than just mindlessly sending randoms to their blatant doom. America in particular got rid of conscription specifically from how many problems conscripts caused in Vietnam and how little they really did to increase overall combat effectiveness. The only time conscripts make sense is if your country only has a few million at most and is primarily geared towards defense, in which conscripts can shine on their own either out of a need to defend their country or to save the people who want to fight from getting some random non combat job. But on the offense? Frick no, and there’s plenty of wars that proved it.

Do you have the slightest idea how litrle of a shit the average zoomer gives about muh career? They know they’re completely fricked regardless of what they do, forced jail time is not going to change that. Zoomers and millennials are already well beyond pissed with the current job market as is.

Move to another country. Imagine dying in Vietnam only to have the government return it to the commies. Frick that shit, I'd rather spend some years in jail, or hide. Move to another western country if the government enacts repressive laws against draft dodgers. Better than coming back with agent oranged, maimed or dead.

If a large enough sector of the country refuses to join, these congressmen, who won't express a thought without checking the polls, will back down.

People say a lot of things. Remember that if you are doing a real mass conscription, the first step to dealing with evasion is not prison, it's just conscripting you anyway. Only after they determine that you can't be forced to perform any useful function do you get imprisoned.

Now to the OP post: Over the whole of WW2 11% of the US served in the military, at peak (1945) 8.6% were in service. With the current population, that would be a 28.3 million man army, about 20x the current amount. Keep in mind it took the US 5 years to get there (Yes, we started before war was even declared. the military had quadrupled in size between 1940 and 1941).

We could totally draw those numbers, but why? We don't have nearly enough equipment to field them. That would be the real effort, developing the manufacturing and electronics to support even a 4x increase. Due to demographics, the real "draft" the US would have to do would not be rounding up the kids into the army, it would be rounding up the retired boomers back into the workforce. I'm not sure which group would be more ill-suited to the task. That, and life would become very unpleasant for the elderly, as the resources that currently go into caring for them would suddenly dry up.

Yes, America can mobilize its forces and engage the draft in war time. No, they will not have as many healthy people ready to go as they once did. Yes, your ass is still going to fat camp if they need more warm bodies and unless you are an actual 4F beyond weight problems you are going to the front.

Unironically muh social credit. Enjoy not being able to get a job, loan, or own property if you be dodgin' that draft. The gays on this site screeching about muh freedoms have no idea just how much a government can frick with people they don't like if they really want to. Don't forget, in a formally declared state of war the usual limits of governmental power basically get thrown out the window.

The problem is being highlighted in Ukraine who even with years of forewarning and military development for the west are showing that conscripted/mobilised troops take ages to train. Most effective western combat systems are also fairly complex. Line infantry boots are easy to fill to hold positions but to perform effective offensive maneuvers in conjunction with artillery/air assets take significant skill and practice

TLDR: Yes to fill basic/defensive roles. No to invading another country.

Half a billion civilian firearms owners in the US and EU along with . There are less than a million in China and Russia. The EU and US have nearly 3 million active service and 4 million in reserve. That means they have enough troops to commit to a total war and enough armed civilians to genocide any enemy civilians or supporters found. Kill all Russians. I am a moderate.

Well. The US could activate all it's reserves in roughly 2 months. That would add another what 10 or so BCT of various flavors. As for training more units via conscription? We have enough equipment in reserve/mothball to probably equip another 20 or so BCT. That's probably going to take six or more months to train up, equip, and organize. A major limiter on this is going to be officers as we would need Congress to approve on the expansion and they tend to take a while to get and train to decent levels.
