You would need to get through a lot of thislck shin and blubber to get to a vital organ. You could punch a fist sized hole in its heart and it would keep on pumping.
You would need to make a brain shot. And not with 308 or 12. You would need to use something like the 416 Rigby. A very long heavy for caliber bullet with a round nose, solid, and at a velocity fast enough to generate a lot of momentum but not too much so that it would want to dump it all on impact. A good round nose and straight sides so it travels straight through bone and tissue.
416 Rigby. Any of the usual NE elephant guns in the 400-500 range would probably get it done. Brain shots. Only way to go.
There was a study done on shooting the heads of dead pilot whales to gauge effectiveness. Regular old .308 FMJ easily made it to the brain. Hunters going for narwhals and beluga whales use .308 riles.
