Winter Phase

With winter in three months, how will this affect the war effort? Especially given the Russian's logistic failures and attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure?

Russia has been shit at every single thing they have done. Why would they even be able to cope with winter at all?

I'm pretty sure that we are heading for an offensive against Finland in 1939/1940 this winter.

Lots of (bad) analysis saying the lines will freeze in place, but I think Ukraine has other plans. Every soldier will have a self-heating gourmet MRE for every meal while Russians will be boiling their boots and suffering even further plummeting morale. Plus hard ground will play to the heavily wheeled but fast Uk forces vs slow tracked Russians. Also will totally expose the Russians from the air/space for GPS guides strikes.

I think Ukraine only went for this latest offensive to rebuild Western confidence. They'd have rather gone for one big push in midwinter.

Admittedly, their MREs don't have heaters. They heat up packets with main course in pots of hot water.

There's basically two systems in modern rations. Either a self heater or you pour hot water into the bag. If you actually need to put the bag into a container with hot water in, it is an older system. Ukraine is being supplied with MREs from several dozen nations, most of whom have their own version, so I'd say an Uraine soldier is having an exciting menu of unknown every damn day. Hopefully not expired.

        >permafrost
Are you a Floridian or something? Ukraine gets plenty cold enough to develop a frost line. Permafrost is the lower soil levels never thawing in summer and has nothing to do with the top section of soil freezing in winter.

A few weeks of sustained, below freezing temperatures are all that's required to freeze the ground solid. It's more than enough to support even heavy wheeled vehicles, let alone something with tracks. I work municipal construction in northern Illinois and the frost line is like 3 feet deep. Come winter, any underground crew working will bring the jack hammer attachment for the equipment so they can break through the top layer of frozen dirt. It's literally ice and rock hard.

The weather was in the 40s F for weeks and the overnight low wasn't even below freezing for a week straight. For the entire month of Feburary 2022 in Kiev, there was only one day with a high below 32 F.

Before the invasion, everyone, even the fricking PBS news my grandmother watches, was saying that if Putin waited until after the Olympics, Russian logistics would be fricked by mud until early summer when the ground firmed up. Besides, the first two weeks of the invasion the Russians wouldn't have left the roads regardless of ground conditions. They were making a beeline to Kiev and even hard ground can't make cross country travel compare to roadways for speed of maneuver.

You pretend to know shit, yet your goldfish memory doesn't even extend back 7 months. Pathetic.

Russia would only benefit from mobilization after several months to put conscripts in uniform with cursory training. In the meantime they bare costs of domestic unrest. Have you been looking at flight trackers since the war began? The US is the biggest contributor of weapons to Ukraine, who are totally unaffected by the Russian gas strategy. The US cargo planes land in the UK, where they then head on to Poland, who then deliver gear to the Ukies by land. The UK and Poland are, just to remind you, some of the countries that hate Russia the most.

The only way to stop the weapons is to get the US, UK, and Poland to stop sending them. Good luck.

You know they say all men are created equal, but you look at me and you look at Zelensky and you can see that that statement is not true. You see normally if you go to war with another country you got a 50/50 chance of winning. But I'm a geopolitical FREAK, and I'm not normal. So you got a 25% chance AT BEST at beat me. And then you add VDV to the mix? Yo-the chances of winning DRASTIC go down! See the three way at Russo-Ukraine, you got a 33 and 1/3rd chance of winning. BUT I? I got a 66 and 2/3rd chance of winning cause Georgia KNOWS they can't beat me, and they're not even gonna try! So Ukraine, you take your 33 and 1/3rd change minus my 25% chance, and you got an 8 1/3rds chance of winning at Russo-Ukraine. BUT THEN you take my 75%chance of winning (if we's to just go 1 on 1) and you add 66 and 2/3rds chan- %s, I GOT A 141 AND 2/3rds CHANCE OF WINNING THE RUSSO-UKRAINE WAR.

      Zelensky? The numbers don't lie, and they spell 17 1 5 4 5 7 3 2 FOR YOU!

Wait till France restart its 26 nuclear reactor during winter. That's one of the biggest issues right now for Germany and Spain: France was a net exporter of cheap electricity, but had to stop 26 of its nuclear reactors for maintenace. Half of them are supposed to be restarted during the course of September/October.

They wont be restared. The stated problems (cracks in the welds) are fixable with 1-2 months downtime but it has been far longer than that. Stopped reactors are part of the WEF great reset (read great economic depression) program. Sweden has acute energy shortage in the southern parts of the country. Meanwhile we have 1500 megawatts of oil fired powerplants mothballed but ready to use in the very same areas. Firing them up would cut the average price of electricity into half. That wont happen.

Winter will affect both sides. Soldiers will be cold and miserable but unlike some other conflicts there are plenty of civilian buildings where they can find warmth. More important is the rasputina, the mud coming with the onset of winter. It will slow movement of all kinds of vehicles greatly, be it trucks or arty. Attacks will slow, but retreats will be difficult too. Whoever can bring arty closest to the enemy will find targets much easier. In any other conflict the airforces would have a lot of fun, but here - nope.

winter is great for offensives, I expect Russia to, as always, frick up their supplies. Meaning soldiers lacking winter clothes and warm food. Frozen ground is good for traversal, rivers stop being big obstacles. Long nights means NVG are more important

Well, aren't that quaint. Both are DPNP-R4, but they are quite different.
The one you linked has no separate meal pouches and instead everything is put in one bag. Also no table of contents on large bag.
And according to aforementioned table from video linked by me, there should be no heater.
A explanation that I could find is that the one you linked was apparently put together in May, while the one in my video - in June. Perhaps in May they were throwing together whatever they felt like throwing.

Spoons, napkins and wet wipes are listed there, though.
In any case, I believe winter rations should have closer to 5500kcal, mayhaps they'll have heaters. Though you need liquid water to use them, so who the frick knows. We'll see in a few months I guess.

They are entirely capable of making low spec gen 3 NVGs but are incapable of making decent thermals. But they see no need to equip their infantry with night vision and Ukraine is getting tens of thousands of NVGs. I've seen some PVS 31s so definitely their SOF is well equipped but I anticipate that everyone else will get a huge variety of gen 2 and gen 3 tubes.

Winter is night vision season, and I anticipate the Ukrainian night fighting superiority will seriously degrade the Russians.

      >Allright I got a question: wouldnt the ground freeze, making it harder to dig in, thus artilerry being more deadly?

i've heard unconvincing theories on this. supposedly the hard ground doesn't let munitions sink in and explode, so effectiveness and range of shrapnel is more lethal.

      >Which russia favors, so they just going to use everything they have left to grind up as much ukies they can.

shoigu will likely throw russian prisoners in the meat grinder, if he isn't one of those himself soon enough. russians lost a lot of equipment, artillery pieces and ammunition, overall the strategic initiative to do anything. the rapustista will hit in the next few weeks, which will frick with both sides logistics. ukraine will reorg and resupply, maybe wait for late winter after the russians take inevitable frostbite casualties from a precarious logistics system.

      Anonymous

Harder to dig. But that works against the Russians as the Ukraine arty in some cases will outrange them. The crucial issue is that self moving arty is HEAVY. The M109, to pick just one, weighs in at 27 tons. You can drive it over hard ground but if a spot is a little softer somewhere the driver might not be able to see it under the snow, and then there is a thunk! and it's time to break out the cards and tea while waiting for help. Come to Scandinavia some time in the winter months, and behold trucks from the entire Europe be stacked sideways and upside down along the steeper roads. And there's not even anyone shooting at those guys.

This winter, Europe will literally freeze, and next year, Europe will literally starve, and after the Ukie-Puccia war has been ended with a peace, Russia will still be canceled by EU and NATO, and euros will have to freeze and starve every year. Its not going to last, the coming uprisings in Europe will have Russian support, and the best pieces of Europe (Germany, Scandinavia, central Europe) will fall into the Russian-Chink sphere. NATO will become a rump alliance consisting of failed Britain and Failed France backed by the Soviet-style dictatorships of America and Canada.

Just look at the fundamentals, in less than 1 year most Swedes will be totally bankrupt since the cancelings and sanctions imploded the Swedish debt bubble. Same applies to Denmark & Finland.

Well, both sides will have troubles advancing, Russia obviously more than Ukraine, due to the weather. That's why I think the timing of the northern counter-offensive is so perfect, cause even if it slows down, the autumn weather will make it easier for Ukraine to hold on to the territory and Russia will be stuck in the mud if it tries to re-retake the areas. We'll see more arty, drone and javelin action as russians once again take their armor on the roads, I would not be surprised if they just repeated the same shit they did in February. All in all, it's looking good for Ukraine. Don't think they're gonna push em into Crimea until next summer though, the weather will not allow it. But that also means Russia will not be able to make any gains as well.
