I've been thinking about how to go about digging a shelter into the side of a big hill near a river on my property, but I don't want to half-ass it and end up fricking up one of my favorite spots to chill and fish.
Got recommendations for getting to innawoods? I've got a 4x4 truck, but no snowmobile or anything like that. And I don't want to get stuck in snow 15 miles up in the mountains. Should I get chains?
You're gonna die if you just use a wool blanket
The scariest part about falling asleep in the winter outside is that if you are wearing something not even close to warm enough, you won't wake up if you get too cold. No second chances.
Generally, the only time you'll actually die before waking up is if you're so exhausted/plastered that you can't wake up.
Your body is designed to wake up when it gets too cold, provided you have enough calories. I have done this many times.
bullshit, I've spent plenty of nights outside with just a jacket or passed out shit drunk under 5' of new snow. If you are healthy and you've eaten plenty you can easily spend one or two nights out with just a wool blanket and coat without freezing.
I once went on a winter tour in the Alps forgetting my sleeping bag and still made it the entire week. It wasn't fun though and I didnt sleep.
Based mountain bandit PrepHoleist. Unfortunately I'm a pansy and don't like feeling as if I'm gonna die. How did you get past the body aches? Whenever I do something like that I'm not really functional the next day cuz I spent all night shivering.
i didn't buy a sleeping bag just tent because i was going to use it in summer to try with a random wool blanket
didn't do it in summers either
winter sleeping bags are expensive so idk

> How did you get past the body aches?
alcohol + music + eating a lot of hot sausages
Alcohol expands the superficial blood vessels which leads to increased heat loss via the skin.
That's nice. You are a very learned man. Maybe you can get a job in the city.
