there has never been a cartridge in history specifically designed after an optic or any class of optics. the scope was simply developed alongside it
you can watch garand thumb taking “full advantage” of it using an MR762 in 308

The NGSW program was developed around the combined cartridge and the optic to take advantage of it in a service rifle role you retard. Without the optic, you're stuck either building the rifle specifically into a long range shooting role which negates its purpose and where there are better guns you could go with, or limiting yourself to shooting it in ways that could be done with various 7.62 NATO battle rifles from decades past if you want to shoot it like a service rifle. With a different caliber in the MCX Spear, you're buying a shitty gimped gun.

                >you need a special scope that won't be offered on the civilian market for years to full take advantage of
All you need is a good scope and a good range finder to take full advantage of ANY cartridge, gay.

the optic isnt welded onto the rifle you fucking idiot. if you want to take advantage of the cartridge, the optic isnt necessary. if you want to take advantage of the scope, the cartridge isnt necessary. not a hard concept to understand.

I never said it was you fucktard. I said having buddies with similar equipment was necessary if you wanted to take full advantage of the scope, considering a large part of its features are based around making spotting like in video games possible in real life, and you're paying for a feature set you can't even use if you buy one and don't have buddies with one.

the xm157 was developed around its own requirements. might be hard for you to believe, but you can actually unscrew and put it on any other rifle with a picatinny rail. again, heres a video of the optic being taken "full advantage" of with an entirely different rifle chambered in an entirely different caliber

the cartridge itself doesnt magically lose its ballistic performance because you arent using one exact optic. you can still take "full advantage" of any cartridge with any quality optic and mount if you know what youre doing

I would like to get one. I want one to shoot suppressed because it has like no gas compared to an AR-15. Other than that I don't really need to get one. It's not worth it at that price. BCM, Aero, and Palmetto State need to invent their own take on the AR-18 influenced designs that we see on so many European gun makers from SIG to B&T to CZ, H&K, and FN. Without standardization in the US market, these types of guns will remain expensive and out of reach for most people.

Ammo stops with proprietary with an uncertain future once it gets adopted by a major military. Now unless the army realizes that moving back to a battle rifle weight class is a blunder, 6.8 will be the meta for the next several decades. But given that this is the first main adoption after countless programs and trials over the years, it is doubtful they will backpedal.

Still why not just use 308.?

          Anonymous

6.8x51 is in every way an improvement over the 308. Lighter, higher BC, better form factor, faster, more energy. Hybrid case ammo in general is a step forward from conventional brass case ammo.

            Anonymous

Eh...there is no free lunch here:
            >reduced barrel life
            >more material required in bolt, chamber, and trunnion
            >higher recoil
            >effectively double the amount of parts in your cartridge

              Anonymous

You can make the same arguments against 5.56, in favor of a larger cartridge with wider case head and longer length, but running at lower pressure and producing the same velocity and energy as 5.56. The points you brought up are effectively engineering challenges that have been solved. sig would not have put forth their hybrid case and the army would not have adopted it if having double the parts in it was a problem.

The “more material in the action” is a non issue. The spears locking lugs are like 50% wider, and AFAIK they use the same size barrel extension as an AR10. I might be wrong, and it might be wider, but if it is, that’s like a whole ounce added to the weapon. And in return it gets like 25% more energy.

Barrel life and recoil are fair points. I imagine the barrel life issue can be stomached in favor of higher energy densities (we accept in-field barrel changes to be an acceptable property of machineguns) and again, you can make the same argument about 60kpsi vs 40kpsi barrel life, or improved metallurgy can bring up the barrel life to be on par with normal pressure cartridges. We’ll see.
