Will we have right to bear arms in space colonies?

Will we have right to bear arms in space colonies?

Seems like most will be very regimented societies, but at the same time very-high trust. Maybe guns will be kept for ceremonial duty and tradition, since crime will be non-existant and there will be no animals to hunt.

Maybe extreme long range shooting, due lack of gravity and thin atmosphere will become a thing, with ranges over 5K or maybe even more.

Space exploration/colonization will basically require martial law. Frick around/piss off your CO, out the airlock you go. My personal argument is yes, you have the right to bear arms, because thats not a privelege granted by some human authority. But no way are they going to let you tote yer Big Iron on Mars.

      >you have the right to bear arms, because thats not a privelege granted by some human authority
Actually it is, only the USA grants that and it holds no weight in other countries.

It's not like The Right to Keep and Bear Arms is an actual thing in the US either
        >You have the right to keep and bear arms but only semi autos and it need to comply with ATF rules and you need to pay extra for an SBR and it does not apply if you are a felon and no pistol brace and it needs to be serialized and depending on your state there might be magazine limits and assault weapon bans and and and...
I still appreciate the 2nd amendment for being a legal block for gun control but the reality is gun rights have been infringed for a long time
I don't like people saying the Second amendment is the reason they can own guns. What if there was no second amendment? Would you be ok with not owning guns?
I say I have a right to keep and bear arms not because of the second amendment but because it's a Human Right that is currently being infringed upon in every country.

The right to bear arms is a God given right, inalienable. America just happens to recognize that fact.

It would probably be limited to planetary colonists who aren't easily regulated by the overarching space government. Space stations will be a different story, only the stations administrative and security forces will have guns and ones that wont overpenetrate and cause a decompression.

No chance, the risk of damage to pressurized habitats and other critical infrastructure is too high.
Maybe it would be permitted on earth-like exoplanets where atmosphere is not a concern, but that could be centuries, maybe even millennia from now.

For the first few decades/centuries? Yes in the sense that literally everyone will be a part of an armed military style group anyways. There’s a frickton of things that can go wrong in space and anyone fricking around on a moon or god help them Mars base or something will not be tolerated, and in that case you’ll have such a full plate managing everything with extremely limited resources you won’t have much chance to do anything anyways unless your time comes up to train or whatever. You sure as shit won’t be carrying unless you’re security on duty, that much is certain.

it use to cost a minimum of $10K per pound to launch something into orbit. Guns will be very expensive

The only ones who will be allowed to have guns will be the local gendarmerie

I'm sure that cost will be much lower with the technology of the day. I suppose you'd front load the cost too in hopes of finding frontier resources. Much like buying horses, wagons, and provisions before heading west in hopes of growing crops or finding gold.

the problem with owning a gun in space is that if you shoot a wall you kill everyone in the hab block.

No, that's stupid. It takes a lot longer for the air to leak out than you imagine, and temporarily plugging a single bullet hole can be done with some duct tape. The real issue is if you accidentally shoot the wrong power line or gas (read: air/oxygen) tube.

okay so how do you deal explosive decompression then and before you say that they will be sturdy enough to withstand such things, that would be something for the far far future as any intial structure will have to be light and easly built in order to transport it up.

You don't get explosive decompressing with that small a hole. You're thinking of pressure chambers and deep-sea diving, but remember there's only a pressure difference of 1 bar between absolute vacuum and we consider normal habitable pressure. It's less than the difference between a bicycle tire and normal earth atmosphere.

A bullet-sized puncture in a space habitat will produce a hissing noise and a mild wind, not explosive decompression. You can even temporarily plug it with your hand if you don't mind a hickey.

A space colony would have to be built to survive micrometeorite impacts, which can be a lot more powerful than bullets.

            Nah, that's Hollywood.

Easy to get that impression when nearly every single movie shows what you described. The movie Apolo 13 has the most realistic depiction I can think of off the top of my head.

Pressure difference is the key. It's absolutely something to be respected - for example, there's a well documented example of a pressure chamber failure where a guy was turned into a spray of meat slurry.
              https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byford_Dolphin#Diving_bell_accident

That was a difference of 9 atmospheres though, rather than the 1 atmosphere you'd get between spacecraft interior and the vacuum of space. And the hole was a lot bigger, meaning very high air flow.

                >With the escaping air and pressure, it included bisection of his thoracoabdominal cavity, which resulted in fragmentation of his body, followed by expulsion of all of the internal organs of his chest and abdomen, except the trachea and a section of small intestine, and of the thoracic spine. These were projected some distance, one section being found 10 metres (30 ft) vertically above the exterior pressure door.[3]:95

If there were to ever be a off earth colony, they'd more likely run a more oxygen rich, lower pressure atmosphere. As mentioned, a lower internal pressure reduces the pressure difference across a leak reducing the rate of outflow and a lower pressure reduces the required strength of the vessel to contain the atmosphere to save on mass/materials.

i cant see anyone being able to regulate guns in any real way with future manufacturing techniques. it's already impossible to stop you from making something with a CNC machine and printer imagine the shit you can make when every station and spacecraft has a metallic printer in the machine shop.

in alienable rights are given to us by God, no one can take them you can only give them up

Depends on how developed the colony is. I imagine it will be much like how it is now. A rural colony will either have a right to arms, or no enforcement to stop people who do have arms. Developed colonies with a larger population will have less rights and more restrictions. I suppose in the early days there will be little to no enforcement as there is a mad dash to establish colonies and make riches. There will be high crime and very little resources to apprehend criminals. So settlers will need weapons to defend themselves from pirates, claim jumpers, hostile wildlife, Mormon settlers, the Chinese, and many untold dangers.

The initial batch of colonists will not be bearing arms, perhaps the 3rd wave but definitely not the first or second. The most damaging ranged "weapon" most colonists will be some sort of pneumatic nailer or maybe even a singular Powder-Actuated Tool but even then unlikely
The most distinct thing I can think of most colonists will wear as a means of self-defence would be some sort of multipurpose utility tool/knife

You have to have your shit together to be an astronaut in the first place, so you'd probably be trusted to handle a gun but at the same time there wouldn't be any reason to bring one. There are no animals in space and it's unlikely there would be any Black folk.

Any frontier society is armed to the teeth. I’m 29 I hope I’ll at least see people living on the moon or mars in my life then. We got To get off this rock

Nah. Who sends people upto space? The government and giant corporations. Neither of them will allow any sort of gun in space, and the few people being allowed into space probably won't have an interest in bringing a gun either.
Maybe if one day we'll have big colonies with people being born there. Kind of doubt it since I don't think a child can develop with low gravity.
That being said, who is up for declaring our planet independent from earth government with the right to bear arms (full autos included)?

Yeah because there were dangerous animals and natives. There is nothing but some rocks in outer space.
Maybe we'll find martians but I'd be careful about going to war with people born on a planet named after the god of war.

I think it's a shame that elon is autistically focusing on mars colonies when a moon habitat is a much better starting point. It's closer and solar power is a shit ton more efficient there than on mars. There are even probably hollow tunnels already there to build radiation-shielded habitats inside

        Anonymous

I don't want to be a downer but I think the reason why Elon doesn't want to colonize the Moon is because he knows it would be too difficult to pretend we are not technologically there yet.

          Anonymous

We're absolutely technologically there for a moon habitat, the question is whether we're economically and politically there. And whether we could take an initial failure in stride.

Wouldn't be a fully independent colony of course, it'd need semi-regular resource shipments. As for Mars, I think we ought to focus on sending autonomous robots there. These robots would mine the surface, build refineries and replicate themselves over a couple of centuries before humans should even be thinking of moving to Mars. A super long term goal.

Probably not in early colonies, since early space colonies or orbitals will probably require highly regimented societies and controlled reproduction to stop a "human garbage" problem from running away. If you're trying to keep a Mars or Venus colony going the last thing you need is excess downies, people with serious deformities, or non-laborers/parasitics.
