At least when humans are replaced by autonomous murder robots, it'll be robots getting their joints rusted in the mud instead of humans.

Trench warfare will happen any time there's a land war where holding ground without a present fortification is necessary and cave systems aren't available.

No, the future will be underground warfare as an attempt to eliminate the strength of air support and surveillance.

This. When the UN backed African forces took over an area that Al-Shabab had retreated from in Somalia, they discovered that they had massive trench lines built in dense forests that allowed them to move men and supplies without being spotted by drones or satellites. Some of these trenches were wide enough so a pickup truck could drive straight through them no problem.

Trenches are the only real way to statically defend a area without being slaughtered by artillery. But its not nearly as safe anymore now that a drone can zero your position for said artillery or drop a grenade on your head. Only real complete defense from artillery and air munitions is digging tunnels which no army's have ever seem to done on a ridiculously mass scale as much as the japs and Vietnamese.

Tranches with a roof over it or at least camo netting so you can't so easily look into it from above.

There are some really cool anti-drone weapons being made now. Some detect them and others can disable them. I suspect many front line troops will be armed with these capabilities to incapacitate drones before they are close enough to strike.

I read that the drones are already getting shot down quite frequently, you just don't see it because nobody posts videos of the unsuccessful missions. They're still succeeding often enough to justify their cost but they're not operating with impunity.

I have a solution on how to storm a trench position.
    >Breed combat lions
    >train them
    >put some kind of protective armour

Imagine a dozen lions causing chaos and tearing one vatnik to shreds after another.

Well, there was a Roman Emperor that loved seeing tigers and lions duke it out in the Collosseum 1v1. Sad to say, but the lions lost almost every time.

If you're going to go full /zoo/ then why stick to a basic b***h, garden variety, lion? Spend a few billion creating (sterile, so they don't start breeding out of control) chimeric hybrid creatures particularly designed for war with a genetic hunger for human flesh. I don't know if you can breed them to 'smell fear' but have the press release say that they can just for the propaganda lulz.
      >Eagles eyesight
      >A Bears sense of smell
      >The size of an Elephant
      >Same strength (relative to size) as an army ant
      >Bat's sonar
      >Teeth that can rip through composite armour
      >What the frick, give it strong hunting instincts and chameleonic skin, just for fun.

Yeah..thats not gonna backfire horribly and end the human race. How tf would you even transport them let alone gather them up after the carnage. And you just know russia would make a rape tentacle monster to duke it out

Reading it back it might be better to keep the females on base (and carefully limited in number) as breeding stock and only deploy the males - just to make sure that a breeding population cannot be established outside of military control.

          >How tf would you even transport them
Stick them in a shipping container, then either parachute them into the target area or - if you need more subtle insertion - ship a few hundred of them to a port in the target country with all the locks on the shipping container rigged to open automatically as soon as the boat docks.

          >let alone gather them up after the carnage
It might be better to give them a timed kill-switch/explosive collar, that's completely proofed against any external signal (so the enemy can't figure out the detonation signal and end the attack prematurely), make it an incendiary charge and you don't need to worry about the enemy getting hold of samples of the DNA, and you get a final 'frick you' to the enemy when his cities suddenly catch fire after the murderbeast attack has finished.

          >And you just know russia would make a rape tentacle monster to duke it out

Pic related, vid related, yes. Also would it be wrong to deploy exclusively JGSDF female units to take on the Russian tentacle monsters?

It's the crab of military theory. No matter how advanced your weapons and defences are there isn't much that keeps you alive and as un-shot as possible as a nice big hole in the ground.

It'll eventually be like Terminator. AI controlled hunter-killer drones scorching the surface while enemy infantry fight each other in underground tunnels.

I wonder if anyone has made a digging explosive drone yet? Itd be picked up instantly on seismometers but it's not like they could do anything about it slowly creeping through the soil to it's target destination. Probably classified if it exists, wouldn't want anyone getting a head start figuring out underground interceptors.

These things would likely only be good for blowing up Iron Dome style defense systems right before conventional strikes. No need to waste a ton of missiles overwhelming its interception abilities.

Why aren't waders more common for trench warfare? You're stuck in muddy water all day, it's not like you're gonna get an opportunity to let your feet air out anyway, so the merino sock + boot combo would surely be redundant no?

think of all the wars in the last 40 years. How many have involved large-scale, grinding trench warfare? I can only think of two, and both are cases of roughly evenly matched opponents that both have mass but no sophistication. Iraqi trenches got casually swept aside in 1991. Static positions took a beating in Nagorno-Karabakh. PGMs make static defenses significantly less effective and the main reason losses aren't way higher in Ukraine are the relative lack of them

Imagine if from the start Russia had plenty of good PGMs and the intelligence to employ them efficiently. The moronic "I don't know what to tell you, Ukraine just disintegrated" tweets would've been true. If it was Ukraine that had plentiful PGMs and US intel support early on, that pileup north of Kyiv would've turned into a charnel house with the only survivors fleeing on foot to Belarus. The situation reflects the deficiencies of the combatants, not some new reality of warfare

Trench warfare is the base case for every modern war. It's only overmatch technology that lets warfare be different

    >or is this the endpoint of all armed conflict?
it wasnt even the endpoint of WW1

a degree of mobility had returned to the battlefield by 1918 as artillery tactics and combined arms allowed infantry to overcome trenches

Trench warfare represents a devolution of conflict, where no side has an advantage and so they dig in and try to attrition their opponent until they can achieve an advantage again. The reason why we don't see many trench conflicts in the 20th century is the fact that numerous force multipliers have been invented which give at least one side an advantage - namely the airplane and helicopter.

In Ukraine, the Russian cannot SEAD, so they lost their biggest advantage.

they needed to break open the old trench making manuals and make those ditches as livable as they can.
