Why were the Japanese so fanatic in WW2?

Was the Japanese army always like this? Or just occurred during the 1930s-40s

Millions of men from every Western nation fanatically charged machine gun nests in WW1 just because their king told them to. Japan was just a few decades behind the West in everything. Including its brutality, which is how Western countries acted in their colonies 1890s but frowned on in the 1930s.

This. Japan isn't that much different from the west, just a bit slower in terms of mindset.

I don't think any western officers lead suicide bombings or generals committing suicide after losing a battle

Depends whether you count Russians as "Western" or not. If so, yes, it happened. In the first major battle of the Eastern Front, no less. Many of their ruling class were ethnically German back then so I think they count.

None of the colonial powers in the 19th century were remotely as awful as the Japs were.
You don't even have to look that hard. Apples to apples the Japs in China in the 20th century to the Euros in China in the 19th. There's no comparison.

Samurai blood and Bushido, simple as.

      >Was the Japanese army always like this?
Yes, even 13th century Chinese description of Japanese soldiers assumes the exact WW2 Japanese vibes.

      >倭人狠不懼死,十人遇百人亦戰,不勝俱死,不战死,歸亦為倭主所殺。倭婦甚烈,不可犯。幼歲取犀角刈(yi)小珠,种額上善水不溺,倭刀極利,地高險難入,可為戰守计。
      >Japanese people are brutal, not afraid of death. Ten fight against a hundred, fight until they win or die, and if losers survive they will be killed by king. The women are strong, cannot be violated. Japanese sword is extremely sharp, the land is mountainous, hard to invade.

The Russo-Japanese war anticipated in many ways WW1, and Russian generals didn't hide the fear of fighting fanatical and reckless Japanese.

      >The Battle of Mukden (奉天会戦, Hōten kaisen), one of the largest land battles to be fought before World War I and the last and the most decisive major land battle of the Russo-Japanese War,[7] was fought from 20 February to 10 March 1905 between Japan and Russia near Mukden in Manchuria. The city is now called Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning province in China. Involving 610,000 combat participants and 164,000 combatant casualties, it was the largest modern-era battle fought prior to World War I, and possibly the largest battle in world history at that point.[8] The scale of the battle, particularly in the amount of ordnance being expended, was unprecedented in world history. The Japanese side alone fired 20.11 million rifle and machine gun rounds and 279,394 artillery shells in just over ten days of fighting (yet the Russians still fired more), matching the ammunition consumption of the German army in the entire 191-day Franco-Prussian War.[9] The battle was a decisive strategic victory for the Japanese and, coupled with their victory at the Battle of Tsushima four months later, proved critical in ending the war in their favor.

japs got high off getting "acknowledged" by whites because of russo-japanese war and ww1. they saw ww2 as an opportunity to be equal to whites. and we all know how that turned out.
ironically, if they weren't so moronic and attacked the US or if they weren't such apes with their colonies, then they might have kept their empire. but instead, now they are a perma cucked country that is US' personal aircraft carrier against china.

Considering that's what Japanese themselves wryly say about their country, I'd say it's not that cruel

    Japanese fanaticism is a meme.
Everyone goes "muh Saipan, muh civilians leaping off cliffs" but that was the vanguard of the most fanatical elements of their military.
They surrendered a lot, but they also did the moronic idea of false surrender. This meant that Allies just shot all surrendering Japanese. It's easy to get everyone to agree that it was the right thing to do.
They surrendered by the hundreds of thousands in the Soviet Union.
After the war, the national surrender was so profound that there were remarkably few incidents with the occupying forces.
    >but that was because the emperor told them to stand down!
The same emperor who had suffered assassination attempts, been arrested, and was basically treated like a nuisance by the military brass?

Japan trained to a high standard and had high moral in the 1930s and early 1940s. What japan did not do was set up any system to transfer knowledge from experienced troops back to recruits and also to the war planners. As soon as the veteran troops were depleted, the quality of Japanese troops dropped like a rock.

Japan was honor-bound society. They had no Jesus or Moses but rather considered their Emperors to be Messiahs. Basically the Japs were on eternal religious crusade mode. European kings had to atleast pretend they were obedient to Jesus.

No. The emperors were more like popes in Japanese history. The "emperor as God" narrative was just some shit that got trotted out when it was convenient for the real person in charge. The times the Emperor was revered were aberrations overall.

Japanese training was draconian, inefficient and violent. Kenshi's military training is being beaten, hazed, told to do exactly what he's ordered, worshipping the emperor and rifle drills.
They didn't want troops to show initiative so if Aniki manning the machine gun dies then Kenshi keeps using the rifle because he hadn't been trained to use the machine gun not has anyone ordered him to use it.
Same problem in the Japanese navy.
