peace dividend, unnecessary for the global war of terror, it's only in the 2020s that peer conflict became relevant again

      >peace dividend
I wish the feds had kept wasting money on building them mothballing superweapons rather than creating a huge ecosystem of sinecures to harass and obstruct anyone doing anything useful

The SORT treaty demanded a reduction on nuclear-capable cruise missiles and the pentagon decided this was the one to be decomissioned.

This. Meanwhile, Russia violated its treaty obligations, but Clintoon was too busy wasting his "peace dividend" on "midnight basketball" to care.

AGM = Air to Ground Missile

Way I see it, fancy delivery systems for nukes really aren't worth the trouble, because as soon as they're being slung around it's all fricked anyway. Especially given America's no-first-use policy, which makes stealthy air-launched cruise missiles kind of a moot point.

Right, but consider the fact that decapitation strikes are a big fear and probably the only way to counteract MAD doctrine. Think about it, a country does years of intelligence operations and research into the exact locations of an adversary's nuclear weapons. Then, they launch thousands of stealthy AGM-129's at the targets. Boom, your enemy is left with no nuclear attack capability so they can't retaliate and you didn't have to launch ICBM's which are very easy to detect immediately after launch. This is why this weapon caused Russia and China to immediately call for a Security Council meeting after it rolled off the production lines.

There are 2 things Russia and China, especially Russia (since everything about that shithole of a country rests on the fact that they have nukes), really fear. #1 is advancement of ABM (anti-ballistic missile) systems. #2 is the advancement of stealth nuclear systems.

Decapitation strikes don't work against Russia, as long as they've kept Dead Hand operational. You have to destroy their weapons on the ground or midcourse.

          >Dead Hand
I'm not one to totally discount Russian nuke capability based on the past few months, but damn if I haven't come to doubt both the claims made on how seamless and guaranteed Perimetr's function is, and the degree to which it's been maintained in the event that it's actually even capable of the bare minimum shit it claims. Shit could very well be some of the first Russian vaporware of the modern era.

Perimeter is a communication system that allows for local control of missiles, not a dead hand type system.

Isn't that why submarines are a thing? A guaranteed second strike capability as tracking every single submarine at all times is near impossible? Yes I'm aware the Americans probably have the Russian and chink sub fleets reasonably well tracked due to the tech gap but even then it's not guaranteed they could be killed quickly or entirely before launching their payloads

          >A guaranteed second strike capability as tracking every single submarine at all times is near impossible?
USA tracked every soviet nuclear sub effortlessly via global underwater microphone network. They have something better now as that system was handed over to scientists/public. Most likely the new system is integrated with fully autonomous sub-killer drone submarines that will torpedo enemy sub as soon as the launch sequence is determined by sound profile.

how are you going to decapitate the submarines that are going to pop up and nuke you off your coast?

in reality a decapitation strike is incredibly difficult to achieve, which kind of makes these redundant when ICBMs can do the job in a shorter timeframe and better

      >America's no-first-use policy
Is going for a full disarming counterforce strike after Russia nukes Kyiv a "first use"? Or just sound policy, shooting the rabid dog after his first bite?

Why is this something worth spending money on when no one has any meaningful defense against even cold war ICBMs?

The Soviets might develop a ballistic missile defence system which could intercept Polaris.

    Impressive.

With this most recent achievement, fate has in a single stroke, marked the decline of the west and spelled a new era of wondrous prosperity and peaceful global dominance for the Chines dragon, which promises to firmly stand in sharp contrast to the historically bloody ascent of western powers and the cruel subjugation it brought to the humbler nations of the world. With the blessings of Chines reduced shoulder signature will be the instrument with which China affirms its noble stewardship of 21st century world politics and offers the non-western world a different option; an humanist alternative to the depredations of Western leadership and the opportunity for a more equitable and dignified multilateralism.

Unless you can take out all the SSBNs of the enemy and the entirety of their ground launched ICBMs with these stealth cruise missiles they're not worth the hassle, since you're going to get nuked in retaliation

Countering Russian nukes is a full time job in NATO and the US. There are people and systems dedicated to tracking enemy nuclear assets. Very likely most of the Cold War era nukes don’t work. But you can’t rely on that, you still have to watch everything closely. The Russians should know how closely they’re being watched as sometimes we tell the world about it. Ie, the Pentagon mentioned how they are watching for any unusual movements of nuclear assets and see no evidence of it during the Moskva event. Russians know not to start moving around nukes because that agitates us like nothing else. We probably harass the shit out of them if they ever do anything semi-threatening. In reality though no one in their leadership actually cares they’re just there to make money off Putin’s patronage. We can’t rely on that either, though. Even though Russia is a joke we simply can’t treat the nuclear threat as such. That’s terrible, shitty thing about letting these corrupt shitholes having nukes.
