I don't know why they haven't pulled these things out of storage. They are reactivating tanks and using them like casemates anyway. Save the tanks and use your casemates.

They have a decent number of them in storage more recent than most old tanks and have allies who would sell them back. I have no idea why they don't use them, hundreds as monuments, hundreds in recent reserves. Besides the DPRK they could get 300-500 from Asia alone.

While technically useful the whole 'Russia needs to reactivate literal WW2 tanks in non trivial numbers' shitshow would be too much of a PR desaster to handle now. The first guy who would do that would probably have bad things happen to him.

No, they use a shit radio. The drone does all the spotting.

Your radar antenna still get beamed by all the other garbage frequencies you're shooting out, no matter how you look at it you're drastically reducing the effectiveness of radio that way.

                Anonymous

It works well enough, it also has the advantage of being harder to jam because your enemy will find it harder to isolate your communication frequency.
It works better than you think, it's the exact same way corrective artillery is used on the frontlines too.

Look, it's not as reactive to threats sure, but those threats are usually scoped out beforehand by drones with much better awareness than a tank will ever have on the battlefield, leaving them requiring less personal awareness when all they're doing is shooting at prepared trenches in front of them anyway.

Well, they did have many times more then all the other nations around them, so it was the only thing he used to boost morale and scare them.
Now that well over half of all the tanks they had are blown up, the question remains.

Will they attack on foot when they run out? Because I wish to see that happen, recorded in 4K so the entire world will have no option but to laugh at them even more.

They don't have half left in reserve. They had about 1700 in service and 4000 left in reserve including the dregs of the wrecks. That was January. Now? About 1500 in service and 2900 left including the dregs. By dregs I mean the ones that could not be got running had been stripped of parts or were chronically worn (and had been though the Chechen war for example). You are going to be seeing Putin increasingly fluctuating between begging for peace talks and threatening nook soon. He's fricked and he knows it. The Ukrainians rode out his bluff of throwing everything he had at them. The Russian economy has nothing left and teh Russian reserves will be lucky to cling on until the end of the year. After that Russia is effectively defenseless, with no artillery or Armour and few air frames that are not worn out and most of its best AA and MLRS gone along with its best radars, engineering equipment and troops. Its going to be a dangerous phase but I expect that Putin will be deposed and handed over for trial as well as being the scapegoat for the Russian public. 'We never knew' they will cry, please end economic aid. usual Russian shit. As soon as its obvious to Putins henchmen that his bluff has failed and the Russian military is done they will get rid of him in a heartbeat to save their own skins.

              Anonymous

I'm afraid you can't know exactly because you don't know how many have had the transmission blow or engine overheat and seize. We don't know exactly how many of the remaining 3000 odd in store can be made run, its likely they will be dragged out as pillboxes anyway. Russia has been puttin tanks which don;t have engines and are towed into position, have auto, loaders that are broken and can't shoot and with turrets that can't rotate into front line service for over a year. The tanks in these turtle hulls probably have turrets that can't rotate anyway and the main guns probably don't work either. Even at a low rate Russia is looking at loosing another 2500-3000 tanks this year based on daily losses for the last two years and the increased availability of long range ammunition for Ukrainians. That means Russia will be down to 1000 tanks in service by the end of the year and no reserves and many of those 1000 will have major defects. Its heading into Germany 1945 territory, in fact Germany in 1945 will probably have been far better armed and than Russia in 2025. The tabnk situation does not matter that much really, what is far more important ius Russia is facing the loss of 7000 artillery pieces by the end of the year. That's all their in service and reserve artillery gone. All of it (and gone with room to spare). Already outranged and outmatched in accuracy, Russia won;t even have artillery in 2025. Russia needs a pace deal NOW and its going to start screaming about how its a peaceful nation that does not want war and wants negotiations daily between now and the years end and it will occasionally scream about nooks in between. If you think the Russian equipment situation is bad, their economy is dying and is effectively broke. It won't get peace, it won't get to keep Crimea and its going to have to hand Putin over for trial and you can bet there have already been conversations in the kremlin about how that might happen.

let's have fun with numbers. At most Russia has 13617 tanks of all forms, including T54s and rust buckets, units with no engine etc at the start. It's lost in combat 7560. Russia initially had about 2800 to 3300 tanks in service, that figure has fallen to 1700-1500 (for example 1700 before last week of glorious offensive, 1500 now). That leaves 5967 on paper. However the units taken from reserves already are the best ones, the ones that could be got running, not the absolute dregs left behind. At an underaverage loss rate of let's say 13 a day (unlucky for vatBlack person) that would mean loosing about 2340 by December, leaving them with on paper 3,627 and they should have at least 1000-1500 of those in service (they should be able to 'make' 100 T90M from salvaged hulls) leaving them 2627-2127 in reserve. HOWEVER. Satellite information from January shows us they only had 4000 left then and about 1700 in service, for a total of 5700 (in January). Since then they have lost
                This may 248
                This April 326
                This March 376
                This Feburary 288
                This January 339
                For a total of 1,577

Which means they have roughly 4123 left in service and reserve and if they loose a less than average 2340 by December they will have 1783 left including wrecks this December.
This is being generous to Russia. We know from public prosecutions and scandal in the first year of the war that corruption in the Russian military and theft of components such as engines (even from T90s) means they did not have their initial boast figure of 13617. Also the numbers don't take into account losses due to lack of maintenance spares, major part failure and simple wear. Tank barrels wear faster than artillery barrels because the ammunition is faster velocity and a lot of the T54 were used as artillery pieces and can be expected to have shot out barrels. These turtle tanks are very interesting beaus they were criticized for making the main gun useless. The thing is that main gun was broken already.

I am grudgingly compensating for the theoretical possibility that not all of the DPRKs tanks are easily restored to operational capacity.

That said they do have functional original T-34s so their maintenance should be better not to mention they have designed and built at least 3 new tank hulls in significant numbers in the last 35 years...

Oh sweet Spirit of Sung, i just thought of something. Assuming we count turning T-72/64 hulls into T-80/90s as producing new tanks, is North Korea making more new tanks than them?

I think they still have resources to pull yet another 2 years of war, the problem is, what for? It's obvious the best they can do is take yet a few additional hundred square kilometers in exchange of being reduced mostly to human wave tactics against an increasingly mechanized and technologically superior force, so far they still have enough AA and wings to deny Ukraine air supremacy but that's not going to last for much longer when you see at what rate russians are losing material.

I suppose the best they could pull in the coming months with some incredible military and diplomacy throws is international recognition of Crimea, complete control of Luhank and Donetsk while evacuating Kherson and Zaporizhia and come to recognize Ukraine is going to be part of NATO and EU as well as accepting anyone within Ukraine with so much of a hint of being pro-russian getting legally expelled (this entire mess started with russian minorities), with the lift of sanctions directly linked to how much they and their western cronies do not interfere with Ukraine's ascension into NATO.

That is, if Ukraine decides to save itself from the casualties and costs of going through these two additional years and seeing more of their territory turned into a battleground, if this is not the case and the ukrainians persevere then they may recover the entirety of their territory simply out of winning the attrition and tech-unlocking war, but again, that would require at least 2 additional years of grinding and then some equally brutal mobile battles.

Debatable, Eastern Block brought a lot of problems to the region before the end of the Cold War through Cuba, many people became more radical than needs be due Moscow & co. influence, and many economic choices were based on the premise Eastern Block would bails us out or it was working, also pic related.

The ruble is currently at about 91 to the U.S. dollar, and continues to slump towards the magic 100:1 ratio where Putin will sell off reserves to goose the exchange rate a little. The problem is that he’s burned through something past half of all the hoarded wealth that was supposed to see Russia through sanctions, and when those financial stockpiles run dry hyperinflation becomes a possibility.

The whole victory day thing is a creation from putin, it was only ever marked on big anniversaries and not at all on some occasions. The tank was symbol of the worst of the soviet, Hungary and Prague, in WW2 is anything it is the hallmark of the Germans more than any other nation as it was their lead in tanks at the onset of the war that facilitated their rapid gains. Russia has a problem with quality troops because it has chronic public health issues, from a early age of mortality for men through a high rate of chain smoking, cancer, lung disease aids, std, drug addition, mental illness and other chronic ailments. The Russian population is neither healthy or well educated at this point. The Russian homicide rate is massive, the divorce and abortion rate is too as is the suicide rate

It's just they let their boss bring the worst of themselves which IS NOT what a ruler should do, a ruler should bring the best of their people, they fell for it under the delusion the West wanted to frick over them despite all the evidence of the contrary, in the end if they didn't like trons (they actually like turdies and try to show me otherwise I dare you) then fine, no one would really bother about it aside from the usual worthless leftoids, even the ukkies were willing to give them a second chance after Crimea Jesus Christ, but Russia spit on everyone faces and now here we are, everyone was already having a hard time after covid but it's even sadder because russians are like a dumb kid who ruined his classmate's homework while having his legs and arms broken but still tries to look cool despite everyone seeing him in pity and contempt.

When will you guys understand they don't care that they are dying, they will use motor bikes and turtle tanks if that's what it takes to take ground. If 10000 die to secure belgorod then thats what they will do. If they have to damn their standard of living for the next 50 years they will do so.

whether Russians care about dying or not is irrelevant. Without artillery and tanks they may as well be toddlers. They just get obliterated from 10+KM away with no reply. Stupid little alibaba bikes and ATVS? Blown up when they are still KM away from doing any harm? Are you trying to prove that the Russian shills here are not underage morons? You could have 100,000 homosexuals on motocross bikes and they still get shredded before they get anywhere near contact Russia can't fight this war without heavy weapons. No one with a brain gies a shit about Russia and its willingness to die, that's a very raghead mindset that has nothing to do with winning a war or even staying in it. Russia can go from loosing 1740 men in one day to loosing 5000 in one day, take 2 million dead in a year and the Ukrainians can accomplish that if they have artillery and Russia does not. The footage we have of the trail bikes and ATs is pitiful enough. Russia has lost this war and its realizing that time now.

That's not how it works in Russia.
Russians don't choose their own fate, it is done for them by someone else.

That's how it has always been.
Many times someone is arrested, taken to court and then told what he did. And they know that the best way to deal about it is just accept their fate. "Oh, So I did that." and it's off to Gulag. And any resistance will just make it worse.

Those people in tanks don't want to be there. But it's either that or they get beaten to death by hammers. That's how it has always been.

The fact that Russians are turning what little tanks they have into those Turtle abominations is baffling.

They essentially stop being "tanks" and become something more like "Super-armored APC's". Because that's how Russians are using them: They sacrifice everything else (firepower, visibility and mobility) for sheer protection, and then just use them to carry mobiks into front lines in suicidal meat wave attacks. That's what they are: they are APCs now. Their main cannons, if they even have any ammo for them, are used only as artillery when they are not taking part in those meat wave attacks. the turtle shell armoring basically prevents them being used as anything other than self-propelled artillery.

I honestly think Russia will run out of tanks during this year. I don't think they will be able to reactivate more than a fraction of those rust buckets in their cold storage. Everything that has been easily reactivated already has been pulled out. Only the scrap heaps are left and getting them even moving is difficult for russkies.

Just kill the bastard already, so you can blame him for everything and sue for peace. And we can all go home.

From what I've seen, they use them the same way African rebels fight. Like crawl up to a hill or treeline, shoot blindly at where you think the enemy is and then run back to your line. It's so obvious how lacking the training is. It's just a crew of bumpkins given a tank and no orders other than to use the tank to shoot at the bad men over there.

      >and then just use them to carry mobiks into front lines in suicidal meat wave attacks
Some of the turtles have mine rollers mounted to them. Presumably the idea is to make the lead tank more resillient against drones so it can keep clearing a path through the mine fields and the non-turtle tanks and shitbox tractor APCs following behind it can get to the fight more easily.

Tanks are designed to have some armor while fulfilling a role (laying accurate fires on a target to support the infantry)
Turtles are designed to have infinite armor and never lay fires upon anything cause they can't fire their gun. They're a failure of design

Im ill give my two cents here

Turtle tanks and a fricking stupid idea, however what could POSSIBLY work is turtle transports

Put a cope shed on an MT-LB or a BMP-1 and it might be able to withstand some FPV attacks, the lost of firepower is not such as big issue because the MT-LB is only armed with a machinegun and the gun on the BMP-1 is already almost useless

The main problem is that the troops wont be able to ride on top of the thing, so they must put up with the cramped interior

      There's turtle MT-LBs...

Well the leeroy jenkings vehicles seem undermanned if anything, a transport should be transporting troops, the leeroy jenkings vehicles also have a mine plow,, not very effective, but being used

The main problem with turtle transport is that it gives up speed and thus initiative, which is the whole reason d'eitre for transports: even if it was 100% indestructible, it would still be a failure.

Uhmm, well it depends om how heavy the cope shed is but i do see your point

I think making super tough tanks to use for mine clearing is actually a pretty good idea although the execution leaves a lot to be desired.

An unmanned and unarmed tank with loads of spaced armour, a plow and extra tracks, which clears a path through the minefield whilst being largely immune to mines, drones and ATGMS.
Regular tanks and APCs could then follow behind it to provide fire support and disembark infantry.

With no crew inside, no turret and with no ammo to protect, the tank can be made obscenely tough.
