Why the swing fire lost out to the TOW missile everywhere outside of British service.

Why the swing fire lost out to the TOW missile everywhere outside of British service. they designed it to turn a corner as to not leave a trail of smoke back to the firing team, but as smokeless rocket fuel became the standard the finicky swing fire was all but sidelined every but the third world

  1. 4 weeks ago

Expense and Reliability are the 2 usual suspects why weapon systems that look better on paper lose out.

In this case, Swingfire had the issue of being MCLOS until 1980, while TOW was SACLOS from the start. Having the user make the "swing" probably caused a lot of new operators to swing the missile right into the dirt, or be very careful and thus create an extremely large dead-zone while they gain control over the missile. Whereas the dead-zone for TOW was 200 meters, less than 1 second of travel.

This won’t help shield discussion about British weaponry. TOW and swing fire were direct competitors and talking about why the TOW won out is ok

TOW and Swingfire weren't originally direct competitors, they were designed in tandem to be complimentary using two different operational concepts. TOW's range and power increased during development to be comparable to Swingfire so the US didn't see a need to adopt Swingfire while from the outset the UK designed Swingfire to be used from concealed positions at long range and found TOW's operation incompatible with those parameters.

They were direct competitors and almost everyone chose TOW. The British have been known to adopt inferior domestic products out of a sense of pride.

Swingfire has twice the range and twice the warhead. One is a vehicle mounted weapon system the other is for dismounted infantry primarily (it was mounted to some vehicles afterwards).

They aren't comparable weapons, they served together in the British army. TOW was even larger and heavier with a longer range still so was attached to helicopters.

      Best of all worlds.

Primarily because it had a protracted development and Swingfire wasn't initially designed to be man-portable or heli-launchable.
Projects to make it such (Beeswing and Hawkswing) were being superseded by SACLOS systems before development finished and funds went to making existing Swingfire systems more reliable and upgrading it to SACLOS, rather than continuing to develop variants for light roles in parallel.
Britain themselves opted for the cheaper solution of buying MILAN (man portable) and TOW (air launchable) for these roles respectively.

An impact fuse with a crush switch is used to detonate the warhead. As this warhead lacks a precursor charge, its utility against armored vehicles protected by reactive armor is questionable.
damn. It really was outclassed by even the Milan

    >The Swingfire was deployed into several conflicts, including the Persian Gulf War and the Invasion of Iraq. Though as luck would have it, none were ever launched in combat
    How quintessentially british

    >The current operators of the Swingfire as of late 2015 include Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Sudan
    This speaks volumes

He's genuinely braindead. In the harrier thread he's now claiming the Falklands war wasn't actually a war and nobody considers it one.

You can explain why photographic evidence no longer counts, hm? What will it be this time - unsubstantiated claims of it being staged?

Unsurprising. The guy is so obsessed that you could give him multiple verified eyewitness accounts from reliable sources on anything to do with the bongs and he’d still try to find a way to claim it doesn’t count. Needless to say it results in him adopting absolutely retarded positions in his desperation to avoid admitting he’s wrong.
