Why not add grenade machineguns (GMGs) to MBTs to give them CQB capabilities

Instead MBTs only have 50cal /12.7mm Mguns for low AA capabilities.

GMGs take big rounds, can't carry as many.
Doable, but might be better with a machine gun since the main gun can probably blow up whatever you want to blow up.

IIRC the new gen of German MBTs have 30mm on top for anti-drone?

If you're talking about "Abrams X", that's American, and it's also an unsolicited proposal from the mfg. "Unsolicited proposal" = it's about as real as the B-1R was 10 years ago.

I still think it was built to style on the company that makes the Armata.

slapping a 20/30mm gun on top of tanks has been a fever dream of designers for the past 80 years, and yet only a handful of pre-production prototypes have ever even been tried. the problem is that you cannot carry enough ammo to make it worth it, and the massive size of the gun + magazine limits everything else

Do you really need 30mm for drones? Wouldn't something like a m134 suffice?

30mm is so you can use airburst shells. A minigun certainly wouldn't do, not enough range, but maybe the .50 cal or .338 LM version might work better

If a 20mm Vulcan is a gun, and it's 7.62 counterpart is a minigun, then what does that make a 50. cal gatling? A mediumgun?

That's would be $3000 per bullet.

Minigun would be ok. Even more you can add minigun antidrone capability as a part of current tank capability. Change coax to minigun and make it be able to elevate independently past +20degress. Like French had with their 20mm coax on AMX-30, for anti-air capability too. So you get your 7.62mm coax you need anyway and it can shoot down drones (and has additional nice perks like be able to fire at 600rpm non stop without barrel change).

      It's the E-MBT, Franco-German. But yeah, a 30mm airbursting gun

The designer said they looked into both 20mm and 30mm, and the latter offers them a better airbursting performance against drones
      >“There was a logic in increasing the calibre of our RCWS, the only way to do it without moving to a much bigger category of systems being the adoption of the 30×113 mm calibre which has a shorter effective range compared to the 25 mm but ensures a much higher terminal effect, allowing the use of proximity fuses, which are a must when we think in terms of anti-drone capabilities,” Olivier Lequeux, Nexter Turrets Marketing Director, tells EDR On-Line, underlining that Nexter is not thinking much in terms of commercial drones but rather at small-size military drones and loitering munitions, exploiting lessons learned from Dombass and Nagorno-Karabakh.

Just have a dual 20 mm autocannon setup on the top that is remote controlled.

The minimum range of 40mm grenade fuzes from a GMG is about the same as the minimum range due to depression of a tank's main gun.

tanks have machineguns for killing infantry, not planes
grenades are huge. you could carry about 100 grenades, or 5,000 rounds of machinegun ammo. you pick

because now you have a whole new bulky ammo type to take up space in your cramped tank. So you can carry less ammo for your other weapon systems.
