Why is the Taiwanese navy so bad?

It’s not even just their small scale, taiwan probably couldn’t even beat their south East Asian neighbours that have better and more advanced ships and armaments. Despite the latter being a shithole thirdies.

The backbone of its navy the destroyers and frigates are literal retired us Cold War relics.

It’s submarine force are fricking grampa tier upgraded ww2 and 50s subs.

The only modern and capable warship is 2 Tuo Chiang corvette, weighs 500 tons, no vls cell, a literal 1 time used heavy fishing boat.

Of all the money they have been modernizing it’s military, why didn’t they some fund on their navy? They could’ve modernize them again with the US and purchase better missiles than let it be a useless sitting duck outranged boat.

It’s fricking mistake to completely abandon their navy, they won’t be able to break out the blockade encirclement by PLAN. It would literally be the end.

Taiwan’s economy relies on heavy imports and exports. They are also food import reliant, their gas reserves could last them about a few weeks and 3 months of crude oil.

China could just siege their island by air and sea and they will literal starve without shipments coming in unlike Ukraine which is a agriculture powerhouse and aid can arrive at bordering Poland.

How’s that shilling? That’s the current condition of their navy, I am wondering how they are gonna face the PLAN with their obvious outdated and outnumbered rust smoker without having to go all in on city-alley warfare.

Only serious discussion on the current Taiwan situation

They aren't, it would be suicide to try. They're going to use small missile boats (like the one in the OP) and shore batteries. Ukraine sunk Moskva with a shore battery.

God I would love to see China try an invasion, it would be a shitshow so massive that it would make Russia's invasion of Ukraine look like Desert Storm.

      >China tries to land 200,000 soldiers
      >Half of them drown when their transports are hit by anti-ship missiles
      >Rest advance a mile inland and are halted
      >Chinese soldiers starving on beaches forced to eat rotting MREs that give them food poisoning
      >China orders troops to kill themselves, calls anyone who surrenders traitors and declares an overwhelming victory against the West

Taiwan is basically an urban environment and some mountains its unlikely the chinks will starve since they can just raid the local supermarkets. Most likely a blockade is placed and both chinks and taiwanese will starve to the point they might eat eachother

no matter how advanced their navy is they will never have enough numbers to prevent it from getting raped by the PLAN. Better to invest in planes and machine guns. Wait for the Americans to take care of the sea

      >Better to invest in planes.
Will get fricked also. They need to stop relying on perceived wonder weapons and master the basics.
      >Wait for the Americans to take care of the sea
Horrible advice and one that, sadly, Taiwan's taken to heart. "America will save us" is why there's such a widespread apathy about national self defense. Furthermore, America will absolutely not take military action against China. What we give the Ukies is what Taiwan is going to get.

        Anonymous

        >What we give the Ukies is what Taiwan is going to get
Not a comparable situation, if America is unwilling to fight China directly they can't resupply Taiwan. It's all or nothing.

That's why predicting possible Chinese aggression is so important. Best moment to arm Taiwan is now. The second best moment is when we see Chinese troop movement indicating a potential assault. Any other moment is doomed to fail.

        Anonymous

Well Taiwan lacks the capacity to lay down the required tonnage to be a real threat to the PLAN, so what do you propose they do besides waving their hands and summoning ships out of thin air? As it stands they should invest into hidden and/ or heavily protected anti ship batteries and probably start building tunnels that can double as airstrips since you just know all their airfields are going to be raped in the opening barrage

Very cool, I mean I'd be surprised if they didn't have something like that already built. Still might be helpful if they had a spare secret tunnel airstrip as something like that would absolutely be a priority target and any plane hoping to take off or land from it would be boned

It was pretty neat, once when I was in the area of Chiashan, I could hear the jets echoing through the mountains.
I don't doubt they have at least one more like it, or perhaps smaller bases around. Taiwan is one giant mountain range, so there's plenty of places to put them.

The PLAN invasion plan LITERALLY involves using hordes of private boats to cross 100 miles to get to the beachfront. Its a non-starter. With no missile defenses, each of those boats is just one strike away from sinking, and Taiwan has thousands of missiles to throw at it.

China has put a massive amount of the attention into anti-ship arms, much more so than their other efforts. China is only concerned about fighting the US, and any US response will be made up almost entirely of naval assets during initial combat phases. If your crazy neighbor has spent the past fee years training to kill a man with martial arts, you'd also skip the boxing gym and just buy a gun.

China will pull a World in Conflict on Taiwan. While they're very publicly moving troops and ships around for western satellites. They're loading merchant shipping up with other forces. They'll sail right into Taipei and roll out. Knocking out CnC and other critical objectives in hours. Then the PLAN dashes across with reinforcements and air strikes to finish the job.

    But

China will never invade Taiwan. It's against the party narrative of it just being rogue but integral part of China. Like a kid that has runaway to the tree house in the back yard. While paternal communist China let's them, and waiting for them to come back in the house. A mainland military force moving into Taiwan. Would have to be sold as a liberation of their soveirgn territory from foreign occupation. Which is Why they're rattling the saber and getting half the US Pacific Fleet and allies to park around Taiwan.

    >The only modern and capable warship is 2 Tuo Chiang corvette, weighs 500 tons, no vls cell, a literal 1 time used heavy fishing boat.
    your analysis is dogshit
Tuo Chiang are highly mobile low RCS mini-AEGIS that have an insane amount of missile for their tonnage, and quite modern missiles, given China's awful signals it's not really that unlikely.
30 or 40 Tuo Chiangs in the strait could play pirate for weeks and would have enough collective firepower to sink what exists of the Chinese bluewater navy, obviously it's not that simple but even with attrition due to subs and random fire they could delay landings by months, then double back to the reinforced ports to act as air denial the rest of the time
then why do they have 2 of them and not 30 or 40?
modern ships are expensive and hard to build, also they weren't really taking China seriously until Hong Kong, the low quantity is a legitimate complaint
Kuang Hua VI are "1-time used heavy fishing boats" and they do have over 30 of those
they've done a really good job getting an indigenous submarine in the water (it should at least be seaworthy by September) but was that the right approach if they could buy 10-16 older subs for similar prices and have them ready right now, even if they wouldn't have a developed military-industrial complex?
it's ultimately down to how early you think China will invade

      Anonymous

      >30 or 40 Tuo Chiangs in the strait could play pirate for weeks
you....know the number of surface search MPAs China operates? You know the size of the strait? You know the endurance of these tiny missile boats?

    >Why is the Taiwanese navy so bad?

Because they're allied with the United States which has a very large navy so their primary military concerns are on fortifying their island against amphibious landings and air strikes not on force projection.

I would focus Taiwan on more "Coast Guard" focused warships to enforce their territorial waters.
Then use land-based AShMs as the primary anti-invasion weapon.

But the goal is for Taiwan to be strong enough that China doesn't try anything.

USA needs to regularly proclaim a guarantee that they'll defend Taiwan to also dissuade China.

Their navy would be hit hard in the opening battles of a war. It's better to put resources towards land and air defenses, make initial waves of an invasion take heavy losses. Buy time for the US and other allies to arrive.

My thoughts exactly, if Taiwan was to inest into their navy it should be in the form of VLS equipped subs. Surface vessels are a bad idea, especially since the PRC has dedicated years to coming up with counters for the USN

China can't into naval warfare. They aren't sea people. For most of their history chinese presence outside of their heartland was limited to wandering merchants in south east asia and bullying steppeBlack folk in the northwest. They only managed to establish a presence on taiwan in the 1500s. Real sea people (taiwanese aboriginals) managed it with canoes and stone tools.

Stop applying sea people logic to non sea people.

Pretty sure Taiwan wanted new subs and carried out LEP projects on their current ones but are heavily embargoed/curtailed in their ambitions because Western nations are fricking cucked/in on a deal with the mainland chinks. They were supposed to get new modernized subs in the 90's but that fell through because of similar frickery (and some western politician probably getting there swiss bank accounts filled).
