What is the point of the outer star fort if there are no defensive positions to put enfilading fire down the barricades? that shape makes sense if you're fighting at the wall, but that doesn't look like this is the case

The captain then jumped out of his tent (poorly dressed, because it is nap time...), combat boots not laced, helmet quickly put on his head, and combat vest quickly donned… He immediately began to command the defense with a combat group available, and support staff (see below). Recruiting offices just don't know what he made carrier in neurosurgery. On paper employers send info about peoples employment to military and requirement should make notes and divide draftees into categories so they don't draft such first. Also if they lack new data about draftee they should manually contact them and fill gaps of knowledge.
But all this in theory. In realty when mobilizations started there were cases when military auditor's found huge packs of unopened letters send from employers to recruiting offices with information about employment accumulated for decades. They never bothered top open them and fill data into draftees dossiers. Why bother? Nobody would announce mobilization in Russia lolololol. And then SHTF.

To be fair it's very french, France is basically the last country to still have actual doctors on the frontline.
It's very doctrinal in france not to move the injured if you can. If you have a bus crash for exemple they rather build the hospital in the nearest field/gymnasium instead of doing a noria of ambulances to the closest hospital.
Same goes for the army it's better to fly the surgeon to the injured than fly the injured to the surgeon if you can.

usually, they built a second ring around the main walls so that long range cannons would have to punch through the embankment before hitting the main wall
also makes it harder to saturate the defenders area with mortar fire, since they have to hit the main bastion as well as the external walls and so will take pressure off any single point
and it meant just another hoop for the attackers to have to break through

It's anti tank ditch (against VBIEDs). Ditches have problems rats can hid there. Sometimes you need to drive APC close to ditch and flush rats out. But looking over parapet over every segment of the ditch is not convenient. With such design you can drive APC to the line start atbd swipe with APC mounted machingun entire length of the line.

In the current times they are too vulnerable to indirect fire. They are only being used here since random insurgents don't have tons of artillery (and even if they did air and counter battery would shreck them the moment they revealed themselves).

          Think about it.

Proper trench lines, ya know like kursk and stuff, is just a really big and long starfort.

If you think about it just the right amount.

Anyway they are no more or less vounerable to indirect fire than a square camp. It's just that in modern conventional warfare combat tends to happen along contiguous lines and not be bands walking about sieging forts. Thus the technical knowledge required to design a starfort properly isn't maintained and in asymmetric circumstances when they are relevant the knowledge isn't there on how to make them.

Well except for the French apparently. Tho the images shown isn't very well developed Fort wise

            >modern conventional warfare combat tends to happen along contiguous lines
Only when space is limited and both sides have time to flood in reserves. There were no continuous lines in either Iraq war, or even along most of the border in the Iran-Iraq war, none of the Arab-Israeli wars, the Syrian civil war and related ISIS war, or even the Kyiv campaign in the Russo-Ukrainian war.

Still less so than a city of tall apartment blocks, which is the most common form of modern fortification after trenches.

            Anonymous

Yeah, but the apartments are already there. That's the theme of a lot of fortifications post WWII (arguably post WWI but there were holdouts still). Trenches, pillboxes, etc are not superior to a polygonal fort, but they are way cheaper and harder to target being dispersed and concealed. Nothing can stand up to concentrated firepower of explosive shells and still be effective militarily. But if you are spread out enough, the enemy can't concentrate enough firepower to get everyone. Modern PGM's only emphasize this fact further. A fort is better than a commie block, but forts require you to build a bunch of shit. No country can build more forts than what the civilian housing industry can provide apartments.

Close to the end of the Second World War, during the battle in Berlin, the citadel became a part of the city's defences. Although several hundred years old, the Citadel's tracé à l'italienne design made the structure difficult to storm. So instead of bombarding and storming the Citadel, the Soviets invested it and set about negotiating a surrender. After negotiations, the citadel's commander surrendered to the Lieutenant-General Perkhorovitch's 47th Army just after 15:00 on 1 May 1945, saving many lives and leaving the Renaissance bastion fort intact.

              >it's why the french barely speak occitan
This happened for entirely different, political, reasons, no war was fought over this. Regretably.

Even then it didn't really work, some French people still speak occitan, picard, breton, basque and alsacien, and their numbers are growing. Expect us, Parisian homosexuals.

Literally, yes. Normans are one of the dozen of people who became French, because France is literally the Promised Land but less israeli. France was founded through the union of half a dozen tribes and people under Merovech in order to push back the Huns and then again with Clovis against the Umayyad.

Normans are largely an english historical fiction.
You had "nordmens" warriors that took local nobles french wives generations before the invasion and got completely integrated because it was the wives that educated the children in Frankish traditions.
Then the french invaded BTFO the actual english and ruled for centuries but it sounded better when unifiying the kingdom to pretend everyone were viking rape babies.
Don't believe me easy take a """Norman""" text and show it to a french. I guarantee you they can read it. Today after nearly a thousand year of language evolution.
Because it's pure french with barely any alteration not even old frankish or let alone a mix of nordic and old french.
Meanwhile nobody can read what the angles were writting.

              > Netflix pumps shows after shows about Nords being moronic white chad savages that rapes and guts out everything that walks around. Everyone gobbles it up.
Meanwhile in reality this is how a Nord warrior addressed a Catholic pontif.
              > "TO THE ILLUSTRIOUS AND DUTIFULLY TO BE VENERATED BISHOP ADALBERO. WHOM HIGH BIRTH ADORNS. WHOM WISDOM GRACES. SITTING ERECT IN THE EPISCOPAL CHAIR OF THE HOLY CHURCH OF GOD AT LAON. FROM DUDO. DEAN OVER THE CONGREGATION OF SAINT QUENTIN. A POSITION OF LEADERSHIP OF A FLOCK THAT HAS BEEN ENTRUSTED TO HIM IN THE SIGHT OF DIVINE MAJESTY. THE FAME OF YOUR MOST GLORIOUS NAME. AS IT IS EXALTED QUITE DISTINCTLY BY YOUR BRIGHTNESS TO A SUPERLATIVE SUMMIT HIGHER THAN THE [CEDAR] (note 1) OF LEBANON. proclaimed more widely than the earth's broad out-stretched length and spacious out-spread breadth. is publicly prominent. No one who understands the words of the lord speaking to Nichodemus. the spirit blows where it will. does not know; for. as is made evident to human sights by your revealing lustre. you surpass the loftiness of all other prelates through the seed of your high birth and the bounty of your merit; having become for everyone an adequate relief and having been made all things to all people. Wherefore are you. pontifical apex. "

French honhonhon military engineers in 1600's argued that this is LE MEILLEUR ZE BEST defensive design, french military remained sceptical
When the engineers finally got their way and the fort has been made, over 9000 gorrillion stronk enemy force couldn't take it and took bazillion casualties storming it
French military shat brix seeing the results
Since then all European militaries started to build this style of fortification for next two centuries

Only modern heavy artillery [as in modern shells with explosive filler, cannonball artillery didn't work] and aviation renders this fort type obsolete...
...but against opponents like sandBlack folk and Black person wewuzkangz warlords that have no artillery and no aviation it magically grants a taste of unfiltered medieval era experience for the nignog raghead attackers if you know what I mean

What makes star forts better than other forts?

      Anonymous

It's hard to shoot straight down from on top of the walls, so with older castles an attacker that made it to the wall could usually find kinda sorta safe-ish places to catch his breath and prepare for his next move. With a star fort there's no such place, at any and all spots along the wall there's at leats one, and usually two directions from which the defenders will have an excellent shot at you. Especially if you use the "niches" at the base of the points for heavy weapons, they'll be relatively well protected there while being able to sweep the base of the walls clean.
