Level IV plates are only 1 inch thick. You only really need Level III full body protection to dominate CQB situations since everybody uses Assault Rifles at that range.

            >You only really need Level III full body protection to dominate CQB situations
SWAT do that, and they still die in crackhouses. CQB isn't a problem though, people just use grenades. Its only SOF that try to pick and choose who in a room dies, and they cancelled Talos for being shit.

              Anonymous

SWAT only has torso and head protection. Groin to neck and maybe shoulder armor but that's it. No thigh, shin, or forearm protection. What's more, it's usually IIIA protection rather than full III or IV. You can cover Power Armor full body IV armor and still come in under 500 pounds total.

        Anonymous

        >hardly
that word is doing a lot of heavy lifting. On top of the visible bulk of the exoskeleton, theyre armored. Idk if you've ever seen the back of an IFV, but its hard enough to get guys in IOTVs to fit in there, even without them your bigger guys still have to cross knees with the guy across from them. If power armor is to interface with all the equipment infantry is expected to be able to work alongside, it cannot be significantly more obtrusive than a guy in an IOTV, which means it cant be significantly more protected than a guy in an IOTV. Which, as you can guess, we already have.

Because in Fallout they made Power Armor in large part due to energy source issues making tanks less feasible. In the real world we still field tanks and other AFVs with issue. This also assumes we even have the power sources to run Power Armor, we which don't.

Besides the ever prevalent problem of power.
Not really worth it. Want to carry big guns? Bring a jeep. It moves faster too and can carry folks.
Want to use it to make infantry that can survive other infantry? Then just put some infantry inside IFV and let the IFV tank the bullets, till the AT- and tank-forces come around.
Want the infantry squad to be able to move more stuff around? Give them a Boston dynamics robo doggo, to act as package mule.
Want to have a dude who can tank bullets while clearing out a building from enemy combatants? Use bomb squad robot or throw a grenade into the room you are taking.

Anything power armor can do, everything else can do better.

      Anonymous

To be fair to the power armor gays, none of the alternatives have the flexibility of a walking tank with superstrengh that can clear a room by walking through the wall next to the door.
And an IFV can't hop into a trench when it takes fire and is much less flexible when it comes to the weapon systems it can deploy since it doesn't have hands.
Not to mention the ability to traverse any terrain.

it's a FUSION core not a FISSION core

Well thank god fusion isn't fricky at all and produces no radiation whatsoever.

        >terrain impassible to IFVs would not be impassible to a half ton man
People always say this, but I don't think its true. People lose rainboots in deep mud and swamps all the time, if your boot cant come free because its bolted to your leg then you're straight stuck. Nor do I think they'd be particularly better at scaling mountains, its difficult enough doing it with a ruck; to say nothing of your bodyweight in rifle plates. Sure its self-supporting, but sheer slopes are going to unavoidably pose a challenge.

Just economics and current tech. That's it. If we had thousands of years to prepare for a war you would see it everywhere especially in use cases where a tank would be too big and akward. People in these discussions seem to think vehicles and power armor are incompatible too because they're stupid and have no imagination at all.

        >People in these discussions seem to think vehicles and power armor are incompatible
They ARE incompatible. Its not that they cannot ever be, but they currently are not and because new IFV/MRAP adoptions are glacial and don't happen for the sake of niche singular roles like pointmen and EODs, they are unlikely to ever be.

On the whole, Power armor is like the Comanche; its tech that's mostly obsolete before its even conceived. The Comanche was intended as a spotter-partner for gunships, but by the time it was ready for service, Apaches had all the same optics and avionics that you could get the same performance by just having two Apaches; and then you'd have twice the firepower. Thats what power armor would be, if the Raytheon Sarcos was ready for service right now, it would be adopted in time to see all its conceivable roles outsources to drones. Israelis are using drones as point men today, imagine how normalized that will be in a decade.
