The prototypes got stolen and then blown up by some dude in a bandanna. DARPA apparently gave up and made the plans open source.

What was even the point of metal gears?
    >walking mech to deliver nukes anywhere
Truck mounted ICBMs were a thing since the 70s
    >ultimate all terrain tank
All the metal gears were defeated by 1 person. It just never made sense, even for in-game

wasnt rex's nuke supposed to be a stealth arty weapon -> undermines MAD because you don't know the aggressor

Basically. Then Rex went Open Source and everyone and their mother started building MG Rexes. This led to MG Ray and the Big Shell incident.

I'm still disappointed that they never expanded on the hundreds of Metal Gear offshoots made from Rex's data.

          >plans get released and suddenly everyone can build a state of the art prestige machine in significant numbers to matter
mgs needed to stop trying to justify its mechs tbh

Shagohod was just an autistic Topol-M. Rex had a "stealth nuke" where they fire the warhead without a detectable rocket booster

TX-88 had a lot of room for improvement.

Am I supposed to believe that weapons and AI engineering came to a screeching halt in the 80s? And then it barely caught up after 20-30 years? And that the TX-88 was considered such a major threat compared to the Peace Walker and Sally's Thrown Piss? It'd be like a Sherman showing up in Ukraine and the entire world pissing their pants.

Can someone explain why in-universe metal gears are considered to be so powerful? How would they survive 2-3 javelin hits? As a weapons platform, mechs never made much sense and really oddly shaped mechs make even less sense. They’re also so tall that hitting them would be incredibly easy.

      >The legs allow it to walk on any surface
      >It's the bridge between tank and human
      >They have the ability to fire a nuclear weapon from anywhere
      >It's armor is nigh impenetrable. No one ever thought to use said armor in any other application

It's the same handwave as Gundam or any other giant robot

Even the game itself calls it out.

Because originally the story in MG was that the world successfully disarmed their nuclear weapons before Big Boss and his gang raided nuke disposal facilities and stole the last remaining nukes, those holding the world to ransom with their bipedal mobile nuclear launch platform, the only reason why it was a scary weapon to begin with.
Then MGS retconned it since the 90's showed no one was going to give up their nukes and would barely limit them, while also not addressing anything regarding how this affected the still canon plot from MG 1 and 2 in any significant fashion.
So the usual moron behavior from Kojima.

Don't forget that in the MG2, the only reason Big Boss became such a threat was in that version of the Metal Gear universe Peak Oil had hit and Big Boss captured the only guy with a functional invention of synthetic Oil and without it all of society would collapse.

And then MGS rolled along and apparently we're back to having oil refineries and tanker ships full of oil.

God, every time I read Peak Oil now I think of the schizo that would make daily threads about that and Yamoto rivets, and tank brigades are physically impossible or some shit. Did he finally give up?

Why the frick does President George Sears look identical to that one most-wanted terrorist from the 80s-90s? If you ask me, it's all the work Gla-li-lu-le-lowBlack folk controlling everything.

Metal Gear SOLID in 1998 was a little bit of a series reboot, the bane change symbolised more than just the switch to 3D.
Besides... you shouldn't take the long-term story so seriously, on this level the games are more about their individual messages (you don't need to let your genes define you, you can decide what you should pass on, etc).

Same reason we don't give the Ukies Abrams. Takes too long to train them in its use for something that wouldn't be a significant improvement over a conventional artillery piece or slav tank.
