why don't the russians just take all their old garbage tanks and refit them as tank destroyers? they'd lower the profile, increase crew space, and delete the death trap loading systems

probably because they're focused on killing women and children rather than tanks

      >they'd lower the profile, increase crew space, and delete the death trap loading systems
how does that make it easier for them to blow up hospitals and churches?

I agree, a lot of russian tanks are being blown up by all of those ATGM's being fired from elementary schools, orphanages, and farms
the other day russia killed 300 school children and no one even noticed
but their tanks need something or they will not win this war, I guess. they need some new thing to kill more children even more rapidly. only that way can russia win

yes, for targeting hospitals, pediatric clinics, and child cemeteries with speed and efficiency
25mm autocannons on a remote mount ($26.7bn rubles each) are perfect for annihilating the tombstones of infants that were killed in the previous month's cluster bombing of a maternity ward

especially when the only thing you're using your tanks for is to murder children as quickly as possible
fact: no russian tank shell has ever been deliberately fired at anything other than a civilian target

Allowing slav tourists on PrepHole was a mistake.

Building an entire tank for the sole purpose of destroying other tanks is not very cost effective when a guy with a tube, a plane, or even accurate artillery fire will do the job.

Because Ukraine has no tanks left. Every single tank Russia uses is just a siege gun so it doesn't even matter they are using T55s

I don't know why people still think Russia is this great super power.

    Pic Rel.

Its a 9 inch upsetter, it was built by the US during WW2 and sent to the Soviets, The Russians still use it to this day for building tanks. In the early 2000s it broke and they sent it back to Ohio to get it repaired and refurbished. They did this because they didn't have the ability to fix it themselves. They couldn't Fix or even build a replacement of a piece of equipment given to them over 50 years ago.

they kidnapped ford employees taht were sent to teh USSR with the flatpacked ford plants henry ford sent there. because the soviets couldnt figure out how to make the dies for forks and spoons that ford employees made in 15 minutes after getting grossed out by everyone sharing utensils and bowls.

To be honest, if the manufacturer is there, many times it's easier to just dismantle it and send it somewhere.

Otherwise you have to dismantle it, model it (you will NOT get the drawings to manufacture it because of business reasons, you're a client), learn what is right and wrong way to fix it etc.

As for Russia's case, I have no idea what they're doing. Maybe it's even a political statement, "fix our stuff and we'll send more tanks to Ukraine".

i dont think they have anyone that is actually trained like you are there. russians trying to get something done is a chinese firedrill. absolute chaos and it has to go through 50 people before a single broom is picked up.

Shitty bait thread but I still like tank destroyers
Picrel is based off a t-54 for back when armor protection mattered. Nowadays the cost and weight savings of deleting a turret is insignificant compared to its downsides and is especially disadvantageous when you're spending great amounts to modify vehicles so significantly, hence why every single fighting vehicle even artillery uses turret. Better upgrade is to just slap modern ERA and ammunition onto one for a cost effective upgrade, then maybe upgrade optics and fire control if officers scalped less off the top than usual, with foreign electronics of course since you want something of quality.

Tank destroyers are an outdated concept at this point. They were a great idea at the time considering the costs required for producing an entirely new tank on a new chassis and how quickly tech was advancing during the war but in modern times they are just a waste of resources. Nowhere in the modern day do you need to mass produce tanks to fight other tanks. With modern weapons a tank isnt made to directly fight others its a projection of force to stop light armor and infantry advances or to advance your own lines into theirs. BOTH sides are targeting artillery and missile strikes to deny the other side armor before any actual objectives are pushed then with their armor reduced they pick off whats left with man portable anti tank weapons during the push.

With the sheer amount of logistics and recon that goes on in modern warfare if you are shooting a main tank gun at another tank something has gone wrong. At this point its the last resort. I honestly wouldnt be surprised if we see a return to smaller medium sized tanks like the Sherman instead of large main battle tanks simply to increase numbers and saturate the field. With how much tech has improved a swarm of something like a modern Sherman would be terrifying. At this point i see something like that far more likely in the coming decades in the same way that the old battleships were rendered useless. Bigger isnt always better after all.

Most of the tooling to manufacture spec T-72s has already been sold. Older tanks, that equipment is gone ages ago. Russia is not good at standing up large industrial concerns without outside experts.

You watched too many ww2 theorycrafting videos. This entire question makes no sense.
They did it in ww2 because old tanks needed bigger guns, but their turret couldn't house a bigger gun. But they could have the bigger gun and keep the factory running if they just bolted the gun to the chassis.
Old Russian tanks don't need to be upgunned.
