Because belt-feed became objectively superior once the disintegrating link became standard. Top-feed was a specific solution for the problem of
    >mag-fed
    >bipod-mounted
    >crew-served
to allow the AG to easily access the magazine for reloads. Once belts took over in the LMG role, they adopted the feed tray of the 2nd-generation HMG for the same ease of access.

      Because SOVL is bad

This, "magazines" still go on top, they just have an extra 200 or so rounds ever since the MG42 was invented. As for why they aren't on rifles, it is because people want the sights on top of the gun without any other distractions. If the military wasn't moronic back then we would have a modernized version of the Stoner 63 by now

        >See post that credits disintegrating link with killing top feed box mags.
        >Be a wehraboo.
        >Type "This".
        >Proceed to contradict the post by shoehorning in the MG42.
        >Be blissfully unaware that the MG42 fed from non-disintegrating belts.
        >Be blissfully unaware that the US were using larger belts of disintegrating link more than 20 years before the MG42.
        >Rub cheetoh covered hands together in satisfaction.
I've come to hate the Third Reich more for being the cause of midwit posts about weapons than I ever did for any of their real crimes against humanity.

Easy way around feeding issues and easier for the ammo handler to change mags. Now we have better systems (stanag IN the belt tray) that don't need gravity to work and room for optics on top.

Ok, but why not magazines ON THE SIDE anymore?

Handling doctrines have changed, a left-feeder would dig into the user's chest (uncomfortabe at best, a BIG FRICKING PROBLEM for an airborne rifle, because now you get to choose between breaking ribs and landing with an empty weapon), while a right-feeder would be a b***h to reach for reloads.
Intermediate cartridges allow for better capacities than the FG-42, while still being about the same length as the grip, and therefore not compromising how low to the ground the weapon can be held.

Is ot really that big a problem to jump out if an airplane with the weapon unloaded and magazines on the chest rig?

What if a soldier is in a ditch that is just wide enough to accommodate him and the rifle up to the grip but not farther, by your logic he should just die.

He covered that. Try reading his entire post and you'll find it, assuming you're not terminally moronic.

He did not. He covered the ditch being able to accommodate enough length to include the clip, or being outside the ditch, prone, and clip being approximately same height as handle. But if you're in a ditch that's only as wide as soldier+distance to grip, he expects you to just die, because the clip will be outside the ditch, exposing you needlessly.

Ah, so you're just using this one hyper-specific scenario that has been custom-crafted to make the thing you're not a fanboy of look bad when it can't perfectly accommodate it, completely ignoring that this is a fundamentally flawed approach for anything in reality? Yep, terminally moronic.

                >hyper-specific
                >custom-crafted
Yeah because fighting at night where enemy has nvgs that see infrared is not hyper specific and we have to develop nvgs that dont need external infrared meanwhile trench warfare is suddenly too specific and custom crafted despite what we've been seeing.

It's easier for everything to be in two axes. You start throwing a third out there like magazine on the side and it all goes to hell. Now you have two choices on your new plane up or down. Down already has shit going on like the pistol grip and the slope of the stock so a mag would fit right at home. Your other option is up and that just gets in the way of your eyes, so we're back to down.

I sent Biden a nice postcard saying I thought it looked really gay and british and he agreed that it was pretty cringe and british and made congress pass a law to make it illegal. Best 35 cents I ever spent (500 euros).

Guns no longer have magazines on top because it is more practical and efficient to have them located in the grip or bottom of the gun. Placing the magazine on top of the gun can make it bulky and awkward to handle, as well as potentially obstructing the shooter's line of sight. By placing the magazine in the grip or bottom of the gun, it allows for a more streamlined and ergonomic design, making it easier to reload and shoot accurately. Additionally, having the magazine located in the grip or bottom of the gun can help to improve the balance and weight distribution of the firearm.

the point in the top mounted magazine is so we can use the bipod more effectively but whats the point if you can just use a belt instead which can hold more ammo and arguably, the philosophy wasnt really great. It was a gimmick.

So is a briefcase shaped like a fish. But personally I find that hysterical.
