cheap guns still exist, they're just a bunch of ugly shotguns, ARs, and conceal carry guns

        None, they dont exist
You're better off saving up for high quality guns like the USP 45 or a 686 that will actually last long enough that your grandchildren will probably pass it down to your great grandchildren

there were never any cheap production guns that met that criteria. sometimes youd have surplus being sold for significantly less than it was worth but there was never an initially cheap gun youd be proud to pass down to a descendant.

Well the Maverick 88 in your picture is as cheap as Turkish competitors and it works and holds up over time.
PSA has really raised the bar on budget ARs to the point where you can get a far higher quality rifle than any AR available in the 1990s for 1/4 of the price.
There are tons of Glock clones made along similar lines that are cheap and no nonsense. Depending on your definition of "cheap" Glocks themselves are pretty affordable as well, especially if you quality for blue label pricing.
        >Hi-Point
Well they are definitely cheap and they definitely strive to make the best product they can for the money in order to have a viable option for absolutely destitute poorgays to protect themselves, which is admirable. But they are disposable consumer goods that wear out and aren't really viable to maintain. Good warranty though.

Mossberg is not the most solid design possible but they can last a pretty long time. A Glock or a competently built AR will last a lifetime and then some. It's kind of the boring answer, but that's why those 3 are the most popular.

If looking back historically, there really weren't a lot of affordable guns that had staying power. For instance we think of the Colt SAA but that cost several months of income for the average person who instead typically bought an Over Johnson or H&R American double action in 32 or 38 S&W. Those cheap old things are still around because they sold a lot of them, but any that have actually been shot more than a few times is absolutely worn out. Either that or they'd get a break action single or double barrel shotgun that's wiggling loose as a dock prostitute by now. All the classic hunting bolt or lever action rifles were expensive once in a lifetime purchases so they'd often get surplus Mausers and Enfields on the cheap and bubba them into improvised hunting rifles instead. The only reason they were ever affordable is because they were manufactured in the millions with government money.

Speaking of revolvers, S&W ones tend to last and in general it feels like they are always aiming for the "cheap and durable" bracket.

Not as cheap or durable as Ruger, and modern S&W has dropped their quality/ QC substantially.

Because there is really no incentive to lower their cost?
Guns largely became fashion statements and toys for middle class larpers. High price tag is part of their appeal for the consoomers. Military weapons wont ever be cheap and effective, unless there is another prolonged global war with last ditch efforts, because they are produced largely to milk tax money, prices being driven high by ~~*certification*~~ and ~~*development costs*~~. Also the overall political trend is to disarm the general populace, not flood the with affordable guns. Cheap weapons are associated with criminality. Imports are curbed to eliminate. International trade is restricted which suits everyine: gun grabbing politicians, domestic manufacturers that fear competition, importes that can scalp gullible clients and large part of gun owners themselves which are elitist youppie homosexuals "collecting" and "investing" in their elaborate arsenals of plastic mim toys and SOVLed surplus.

You already posted it, the Maverick will do what 90% of people need it to do just fine for $200 and will probably outlive your children's children if you ever managed to have children.
