Why doesn't Ukraine just destroy this bridge?

Why doesn't Ukraine just destroy this bridge? It would instantly cripple supply lines to Crimea and allow a much easier time of starving them out/sieging.

Ukraine would LOVE for Putin to declare mobilization as it would accelerate the political disintegration of Russia. Putin is doing everything possible to delay that call. Russia simply doesn't have the time or resources to meaningfully make use of mobilized manpower, and it would totally tank the Russian economy (manpower would evaporate) and destroy the pretence or normalcy in Russia.

I really think Ukraine's bear strategic move right now is a direct assault on Belgorod since it would force Russian mobilization and set in motion the clockwork of Russia's total collapse.

They have nothing to reach it with. Even if the US gave them the ATACMS, their 200 km range just falls short of reaching it.

Russia would amass it's fleet of strategic bombers about 100 of them and start carpet bombing Ukraine into the stone age, while taking out the entire electric grid.

Sure, they could lose some bombers, but hey, they can always make more.

Or, they could just start sending in Kinzal missiles to eliminate ukranian military and civillian leadership. I'd prefer this one, cz it would bring this war to an end faster.

    - getting accurate sat intel on vatnik movements is far easier when they all move through the same chokepoint that's long enough regardless of cloud cover instead of various dispersed harbors
    - expensive piece of infrastructure which ukraine also wanted built and intends to capture
    - humanitarian corridor when the fighting advances to crimea
    - leaving vatniks with an escape route makes resistance softer
    - crimea is fricked regardless once the territories north of it are back in ukie hands
    - paradoxically the bridge is more useful to ukies intact

derbies from the bridge may obstruct boats traveling to and from the Sea of Azov,
however the peninsula can still be re supplied via ports in the east of the black sea,
or via the Isthmus of Perekop if some control of the land north and east of that area is maintained.

in Crimea seems to be surrounded by many choke points,
and the sea ports themself would also create a high concentration / traffic jam if any rapid movements are required.

That's the issue, starving them out could be an issue. If they cut off the russians in Crimea and surround them, then they'll have tens of thousands of hungry, desperate russians looting and raping everything. Imagine what they do now but actually worse. Then there's the issue with leverage. Russia knows that they are essentially dependant on the bridge, so Ukraine can use that as leverage. Take the bridge away and there is no longer any leverage. Russia could even ramp up the attacks again in order to break the encirclement. Even though the success of such an attempt is unlikely, it still means war and fighting on ukrainian soil and at that point I would assume Ukraine also retook Donbass, so Ukraine's interest would actually be to stop the fighting.

This. They want Russian soldiers to flee so they don't have them cornered and willing to fight. More importantly, they want any treasonous frickbags who actually cooperated to scurry across that bridge too. Once that's all said and done, THEN they'll blow it up.

You do realize the rail span is separate from the cars/trucks span, right? With GPS-guided missiles, Ukraine can blow up the rail line first and let all the scared little ratnik vatniks flee in their cars.

Leave open an escape route so the already demoralized men don't fight as hard. It's also free infrastructure, when and if they do retake Crimea. Then there's the 'existential' question and tactical nuke use by Russia -- denying the peninsula by spamming intermediate yield missiles because they can't conventionally resupply or relieve Crimea would be their only option apart from unfavorable diplomatic concessions. That, and Crimea's its own discrete kettle that has to be resupplied, and can be pressured to force more troops that might be committed elsewhere (like Donbass) -- its fresh water has to be piped in from the mainland since Ukes dammed up river. More POWs, more of the 2 million > women and minors forced relocated into Russia out of Ukraine and POWs of their own to trade for.

  32. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

it's easier to retake crimea when russia has an easy escape route back to mother russia. and besides, you can always destroy it with some ATACMS you accidentally bought on the black market. why do it immediately when you can wait for a better time to strike?
