It was created because FBI agents were too effete for 10mm. Do you seriously feel FBI agents have become tougher and more masculine since the 90s?

      >It was created because FBI agents were too effete for 10mm

all FBI personnel have to be trained on firearms anon, its not surprising that people other than field agents have a hard time with stouter cartridges.

That's fuddlore. The FBI never formally considered the original full-power Norma spec load much less ever gave it to their agents. The FBI actually pursued a watered-down "Lite" version that was similar to what would eventually be the .40's ballistic performance.

However the reason why the ditched 10mm altogether wasn't so much because of the round's recoil, but because the guns they were using. The S&W 1006/1076 were getting several complaints about being too large, heavy, and -- most damning -- it was unreliable. For a while, they went back to issuing 9mm guns before they rolled out the .40.

they're just fat diversity hires now, but that's besides the point, everyone uses 9 now, so 40 has no place
rounds like .380 have a place because they can be used in smaller frames, but what advantage does 40 have? its just gay

That last one is the biggest one for me. I've shot way more 40S&W out of my 10mm 1911 because I got a great deal on 40S&W 2 years ago and got over 2k rounds. It's a fine plinking round.

Why does .40 S&W make people seethe?

      Anonymous

The people who shoot 9mm hate it because it's got more recoil and less capacity compared to a 9mm and they don't see it as a worthy trade off. The people who like 10mm hate it because it was the closest 10mm ever got to widespread adoption by law enforcement, only for them to immediately realized how much of a meme standard 10mm was and gimped it.

45 is based and was designed by the greatest gunsmith to ever live

40 was made for weak homosexual cops and women who couldn’t handle the recoil of 10mm , we wouldn’t have that issue if we didn’t hire weaklings and women as police

.45 ACP was army request and was basically an adaptation of .45 Schofield to autoloading operation.
Browning never intended that homosexualry to be in his guns.

          >How do people who like .45 ACP feel about .40?
"You do you, let's go shooting".
Also you can cast Lego minifigure heads out of lead and use them as hollowpoints in one, which is fricking hilarious.

How comfortable is carrying a 1911 IWB? I'm a 240 lb fat frick and I would imagine it would be uncomfortable but I like the .45 ACP round.

The gun itself isn't uncomfortable, but you need to be on-top of your cleaning and oiling in the summertime or the gun will start to rust >fast<. And that means pulling the grips and checking under them, too. They suck up sweat like you wouldn't believe. Also if you're right-handed, make sure to get a holster that covers the safety. Not only is it stabby, it has a bad habit of getting stuck on clothing and pulling itself off of safe every so often, and a lot of strap-retention holsters (and/or dumbasses) can pin the grip safety in place.
I prefer a small-of-back holster because the angle is more comfortable than hip carry, but I'm more flexible than most people. If you aren't strictly married to a 1911/Commander then there are a lot of subcompact options in .45, though I'd probably rather have a hammerless revolver at that point

I only own 45 in all my automatics revolvers. It is another story.
40 is.. well, just 40... It's not bad it's not good it's just 40 I don't hate on it it's just to me the most normie of rounds beyond 9mm not to say there's anything wrong with 9mm, I'd like to get a s&w 610 some day and shoot 40 through it with moon clips until then it's like this anon says

I don’t even think about it

On a side note I know a dude with a lever gun modded to shoot it and it's breddy cool ngl

I like .45 ACP because you can load it as .45 super, keeping an obsolete and inherently poorly optimised cartridge useful. I like .40 S&W too, it lets you chuck big bullets from a compact gun and has kept 357 SIG relevant via easy barrel swaps. I like 9mm because it's cheap and all the really small guns are based around it now.
I have no dog in calibre fights, Fuddy Five types are gay and moronic, cops and feds are gay and moronic, people who will only shoot 9x19 are gay and moronic, and people who can't go without giving Browning posthumous reddit gold for five fricking minutes are especially gay and moronic.

It's this strange middle-of-the-road cartridge which makes little sense. It has the capacity disadvantage of 10mm but lacks the extra power.

9mm gays seethe at everything that isn't 9mm because they have an autistic evangelical urge to rage and whine when others prefer different calibers even though it has zero affect on them. 10mm gays are just loud but easy to ignore, though I do think 10mm is cool. 45acp gays rise above it all and happily enjoy God's caliber without shitting on others. .22lr CCW gays are deranged but might actually be right

It's very comfortable with a quality holster due the 1911 being such a narrow gun. If you're gonna carry a 1911 get a commander-length one

Because lots of people get mad when others like things they don't like.
Basically they decide they don't 40 S&W for whatever reasons. But that isn't enough for them. To feel good about themselves, confident that they've made the right decision in not liking it, they need other people to not like it as well. And not just a few, all of them.
So when they run into someone who likes it? They get mad. How could this person have the audacity to like something I don't like? This is intolerable!

Because standardization became more important than cartridge size or flexibility. Better to have one form factor with lots of different loads and projectile types, than hundreds of different cartridge sizes that are only marginally better or worse.

That said, there's not shortage of guns chambered in other cartridges so why worry?

Shot a box of its great great great grandfather today. The 10mm Mag. Fireballs. Sounded like a bass drum. Such a fricking good time. Spent a long time getting this gun and ammo. 40 S&W started me allllll off. Super appreciate this slow n weak round (though, I love this round, the 10mm Auto quite a bit).
