The AR and to the less externt the glock are firearms that are made from cheap materials buuilt to a just good enough standard. They therefore have high profit margins as the materials in particular are bargain basement. This means they get heavily advertised and marketed 'branded' etc at morons. This means a lot fo morons but them. Two market segments where there are a lot of morons are preppers and conspiritards for example. So the marketing goes there and advertises to these moron mines. It is the gun bought by people who don;t know or care much aboutt guns but want to be part of the ranty 2A gang because of American politics, people who respond to fear based marketing about doom or it about to be banned because they have anxiety disorders. Don't get me wrong, it is not a 'bad' gun its a cheap to mass produce rifle for drilled conscript fire and manoeuvre with fire support tactics within 300m that is light enough for asians. It is just good enough to do that job like the AK and is made from shit as cheap as possible, alu and plastic. For anyone seriously into guns its a meh gun. Cheap materials, variable and meh production standards (if any at all),stupid moron money sucking accessory market. Not all AR owners are splastics but all spastic gun owners have a glock or an AR. If you see someone with a glock or an AR it probably means they can't shoot and own it as a way of herd signalling. Real men who lovce guns buy things like sidelock hammer shotguns, classic revolvers, ww2 and ww1 surp, prevision rifles, 18/19th century guns, steel semi autos, high end big game rifles, drillings good makes like browning, CZ, Anschutz, Hamerilli, Tikka etc etc not this moron cosplayer crap other than to complete a collection. This. I sold all of my crap and meme guns (10/22, desert Eagle, AK…) and bought an Olympic free pistol and match grade 22 rifle with diopters. Much happier now. My only AR is a 20” SP1 sort of clone with a Criterion barrel.

        Anonymous

I'd have kept some of the meme guns as they are their own thing too. ARs don't particularly suck, they are unremarkable, just most people who want to talk about them suck. That is not true for any other type of gun. People who own OUs will talk sheet or trap or people who are into precision rifles, they know their shit. People into side by sides etc etc. AR owners are generally chest beating homosexuals who bore the shit out of you as soon as they open their mouths. Its a gun clique where you can try to buy your way to status on instead of winning with skill or knowledge. It is shit and full of the bottom feeders political/doomsday/moron/skitzo/can't reload/can't shoot/fricknut type. Like glocks. The gun for normies.

All right, ill bite. the whole "its made as cheap as possible" argument is both moronic and also wrong. 7075 Alu and Plastic was chosen for its weight, not for being cheap. Also a weapon working fine and being reliable while also being light and cheap to produce doesnt make it a "meh gun" it makes it superior. inb4 unreliable a 20 inch AR with Rifle length gas system is one of the most reliable semi autos on the planet. The whole "meh production standards" and "stupid accessory market" argument makes you look even dumber. production standards are up to the company that produces ARs, not the design of the rifle you homosexual fudd. Buy a good manufacturer and there is literally no problem, by the same logic i could show you a crusty double barrel from fricking Pakistan and say "look at the production standards of ALL double barrels". A big aftermarket is always a plus, dont know why you would even make that point. Sure, there are a lot of homosexual tacticool operatoooor accessoires, but you can just not buy them. Finally your "REAL MEN BUY A DURRRR RUFLE" shows us all who you really are. All of these guns that you listed are cool and have a place in the heart of every gun owner. They dont hold a candle to the AR on a battlefield. People like me buy the AR-15 as a tool for self defense, not because i want to oogle it behind glass. By your fricking logic the "real men" of special forces worldwide should all throw their ARs away and bring the 50 000 Dollar Browning Drilling to their next mission because why exactly? Give me an actual argument why the AR-15 is a worse tool for self defense and open combat than all these actucal meme weapons you listed at the end. i am waiting grandpa

I enjoy shooting matches, not collecting antiques. If a semi-auto rifle is required for a match, an AR variation is almost always optimal. I also carry a gun for self defense, in which case I want a pistol that's lightweight and not super expensive. I have a nice Beretta for upland bird hunting but you'd probably scoff at that because $1400 isn't enough to enter the "real gun autism" club. My entire interest in guns is being good at shooting and enjoying shooting. I don't care about owning history or any of that shit.

Any AR that isn’t 20” is dumb

This. 5.56 was designed for velocity. No snowflake OTM round is going to make up for the roughly 600-700 fps loss you get when going from 20" to 11". I liken it to the difference between 9mm and .380. One is acceptable and one is a weak-ass "pocket rocket" caliber.

        Anonymous

Plus 20” rifles have less muzzle climb, less parts wear, less uncorking pressure, greater sight radius, and a free 2db extra reduction when silencing with a can.

There must be eight trillion brain hours wasted globally on the AR length debate when it isn’t even a fricking debate. 20” is the design intent. People need to call it quits over a 40-year old argument consisting of a couple of inches here and there.

16" and above is fine. If you look at the ballistics charts a 16" basically only has a 50 yard deficet over a 20". The difference with an 18" is almost negligible, although so is the difference in length.

The AR-15 doesn't attract nerds, nerds just chose it for the same reason everyone else does, It's pretty much the cheapest semi auto center fire rifle with inheritanly cheap ammo as well as the fact it's been the US service rifle for decades so there's a lot of companies and tooling out there for it. Plus being a service rifle a lot of R&D went into it to make it reliable at a low price point. Sure Kel-Tec makes cheaper 5.56 rifles, but they don't have nearly the R&D that the AR got.

To elaborate, ask yourself why car guys are so attracted to the Chevy SB/LS. Because it's a very robust engine developed by an Empire of a car company that takes to hot rodding well because of it's robustness. The AR is basically the Chevy small block of the gun world.

On the other hand… most A3 AUG, AK74, SCAR, BREN, etc people are even worse because they want to be different than the AR crowd but end up being exactly the same. same ‘drills’, same minmaxing things like sling location, all for a useless purpose. That’s not to say having fun isn’t a good purpose, but why the hell spend thousands of dollars on tacticool junk and training then. Will your slightly better gen 53 aero rail spark more joy than the .3oz heavier gen 52?

How AR guys train isn't really the problem, all though most of them could do more shooting beyond 15 yards. It's the insane consoomerism justified by making cringe "builds" for ridiculous collapse scenarios they won't be participating in. You only really see AR guys doing this shit. The guy who mainly shoots AUG doesn't buy a half dozen of them and outfit them slightly differently to fit different "roles."

          Anonymous

What do you mean different from the AR crowd? Most of those guns like the AUG were just marketed and sold at militaries. Intermediate cal semi autos are all the fricking same in effect. I don't personally particularly care about them Now someone might have a modern military collecting and knowledge thing and I could respect that and they would own a few of those guns, fine but that is not the AR owner magdumping and talking about fricking red dots and 2A and their time as a navy seal. The AR owner is a special grade of dickhead. You see them in both arg and gqg, complete spastic c**ts. None of these other have this wanky 2A gobby fake vet can't shoot wanker video game payer attached to gun like the AR has. However semi auto intermediate cals are , yeah broadly speaking tard guns. Not the guns fault its the people that buy them.

It’s a useful tool. But you don’t see people putting stickers and souping up their shop-vacs. That is the main problem that people have mention itt, minmaxing in a situation where it does not actually swing the tool capability needle either direction AT ALL. Fascinating. I always admired the ability to say nothing with many words.
          Also,
          >more perfect

to be fair, i think what he means is that the AR combines a lot of features (light weight, high capacity, low recoil, high modularity) into a very adaptable package, which can fill almost any role. The AR is the "jack of all trades" gun, doesnt excel in anything, but is good in everything

            >doesnt excel in anything
That's fricking incorrect, lol. As long as your barrel is greater than 10" and you don't need a folding stock, an AR has the potential to be better than everything else. Here's a thought experiment. Procure me a better 3-gun rifle than a purpose built 3-gun AR.

ok maybe i need to be more accurate: There are guns that recoil lighter than an ar, that are lighter and more accurate. i never said that these guns were in an comparable caliber. I believe the AR15 is an amazing weapon, my point was that it does everything well. But an purpose built bolt action in 6,5 sneedmoore will be more accurate. An .22 match rifle recoils lighter. An ultralight .22 rifle is lighter. But the AR combines these features with high firepower and capacity, making it superior by being very good in everything. that was my point

maybe. But it isn't a "jack of all trades master of none". It's designed for one purpose: intermediate (point blank to 300y) lethality and it exceeds at that, and is top class at it.
If you were to arm the entire population of a country and conscript them into military service with minimal training (but training nonetheless) the M4 would look something like your ideal weapon.

Being lethal and shot at point blank out to 200 yards (even the 20" lose a lot of lethality after 200) still qualifies it as a jack of all trades. Unless you live in the Midwest you're not going to be doing much shooting past 200 yards unless you're making a point of it.

It does excel at suppressive fire, actually. A SCAR would be a better example of an all-rounder.

    Bad

    Good
I don't get the hate tbh. I have a long range precision AR, 2-GUN, Varminting, and an SBR for defense. I also have a precision AR10 and a hunting AR10 that's lighter. The collection covers all of the shooting I like to do with autoloading rifles other than rimfire. I should have an AK, Tavor, and a SCAR instead? I don't want those things.

People toss all their IRL stat points into their weapon instead of into varying their skills. Buying and making/preparing MREs, then vacuum sealing them might not be exciting or aethestic but it's gonna help your ass a lot more than waiting to use your 6 gorillian rifles in the israelitegaloo.

Holy seething and headcannon. This is what happens when you tie your ego to gun collecting instead of just enjoying shooting or competing.

    Why is 12.5 dumb?

It's not dumb. There are no dumb 5.56 barrel lengths other than extremes (<10" or >24"). Here's how to choose a barrel length with an example.
      >Choose ammunition you're going to use
      77gr IWI
      >Choose a distance you want to have effective supersonic performance at (2200fps)
      200y
      >Choose the shortest barrel length that satisfies the projectile velocity at distance requirements
      12.5"
If you want to be effective out to 300 then perhaps you need a 14.5" barrel. If you want to get to 500 with good velocity you're going to need a 20" barrel. This is a simple calculation that doesn't need to be so emotional. I don't get why barrel length talk stirs up so much contention on /k/. Truly evidence of the normie plague on the site.
      >I want to hit the target at x distance with y projectile traveling at z velocity. Solve for barrel length

In all honesty it's all the political drama around it that's made it so mystical. That's what the AR-15 has become, a symbol.

I wonder how many micro-states are going to have the AR on their flag when total currency/supply line/social collapse comes in the next 20 years or so.

    > Stage 1: No one trying to kill you, so you build up these elaborate scenarios for how it would go down, leading to plans and over-specialization in gear for some rather outlandish shit
    > Stage 2: Someone tries to kill you. Through some combo of luck and training, you line up the sights and kill them first. You realize this shit has a lot more to do with detection and less to do with gear
    > Stage 3: Your job is nutty and moronic enough (I said what I said, you people genuinely offended know that shit isn't rational or healthy in the long run) that you are constantly having people trying to kill you. The unassailable grind of time and odds chips away at your team, and you search for any advantage that keeps you ahead of dying

Most of us never get out of stage 1. Try and latch onto stage 3s, I guess.
