Because the SVD remains one of the best semi-auto designated marskman rifles, and they already have it so might as well use it, rather than spend huge money on the G28 or SCAR H-PR or L129A1, which don't bring much more to the table other than a 20 rounds mag.

It's more accurate than an AKM with a missing rear sight, the actual alternative.

Other than the standard optics its a pretty damn good rifle that is quite affordable.

This is like asking why the US continued to use the M14 in units where proper DMR rifles that didn't suck weren't quite available yet, into the mid 2000s
it's because no one had anything better.

not really as a sniper rifle, more like a marksman rifle

for targets above 300 metres, below 900
it's a shitty sniper rifle that's for sure, can't really do much good with a design based on an AK but for what it's worth, I would prefer an SVD over a Mosin

          No it isn’t dipshit.
It’s as much of an AK as a VSS is.

I'm just wondering why the Donbabweans aren't getting these fricking things. They were built in large quantities and were sent to any frickwit with a grudge against the west, but these people in the modern era are getting Mosins?

Russia forgot how to build them so they're hanging onto whatever stockpiles they've got

Training to use mil-dots takes time, and usually professional training. The POSP scope is self explanatory.

The new infantry will be armed with pistols and multiple shoulder fired munitions. Next urban street fighting won’t use bullets aimed at windows it’s one rocket into a suspicious house and it’s gone

    It works as intended.
Probably one of the most successful DMR rifles around and new ones have only higher capacity and slightly better range

Common - USSR usdd SVD as a DMR with 1 per squad so unlike western sniper rifles, they were made in large quantities
Cheap - why buy a better rifle when russians would give them out free
Good enough - most 3rd world 'snipers' are just the guy who realised those things on his AK were sights and not just point&pray, so anything better is wasted
Rugged - it survives Ivans it can survive 3rd world 'care'

'Cause it's the best mass produced marksman rifle. They made millions of them and out of the box with it's intended ammo you get a really accurate gun (a bit more than 1 moa).

It's not as good as modern M110 (which aren't mass produced on the same scale) for exemple but for something made in the 60's it set the fricking standards.

You have to realize that what we call sniper rifles are designed to "outfight"people with SVDs
so of course they are better, it's in the requirements.

Also AFAIK there aren't any SVD in the US, you have chink copies (that don't even use the same bolt system) and lovecraftian horrors coming from eastern europe. There is a handful of them as usual but it's unobtainium.
