This. People who fell for the high-mount gimmick now need a new hypebeast product to flex on r/guns.

Are red dots effective out to 200 yards? Sure. But have you ever shot a partially obscured man sized target at 200 yards? Even a 3x mag makes all the difference between hits and merely sending rounds down range. The hydra makes sense for night and/or indoor fighting only. But if you want any kind of versatility, which as a civilian I want, it’s kinda shitty.

The only time you, as a civilian, are going to be using a rifle against someone is indoors at like 5 yards

Yep. Just what I said. I need versatility as a civilian, and the hydra doesn’t offer it.

So then the hyrdra doesn't matter either at that point, does one need an NVG red dot set up to hit something at 5 yards. Also most people shoot way more at 100 yard ranges and hunt/plink than operate like a Navy seal

      >But have you ever shot a partially obscured man sized target at 200 yards?
Yup. Every day back in the war days... scource we would only use .22 and .45. .22 for long range since it bounces around inside a man (that's why .223 Remington exists!) and .45 won two wars... Had me a big ol' laser sight I ordered off Soldier of Fortune. Worked a dream and slotted tons o *cough cough* with just a laser and some glass.
Not like you kids today with your silly aycogs.

The hydra mount is the single most important advancement in firearms design. All raised mounts, for that matter. Any gun without something like this is literally useless.

It's a component with a moronicly niche purpose for close-in, in-the-dark indoor combat while you have NODs equipped and are using a small weapon that doesn't have a lot of railspace to utilize, but as has been the case lately some gearprostitutes snapped it up (because GBRS) and paraded it because it's new and looks cool and people are bored since the meta has been settled for a while now. Anyone putting this shit on an AR admits to not even understanding what it was designed for.

I don't hate it for short guns but I hate the people peddling it. There's already better options on the market made by other people who aren't complete fricking homosexuals.

Honestly if I was gonna LARP I'd just LARP as my favorite era operator. And that requires an iron sighted MP5. Rather dump $500 into my MP5 fund than spend that much on a tiny piece of aluminum

IR lasers have no practical civilian use. Either you are shooting someone who does not have NODs, and that can not possibly be justified self defense in a court of law and you will go to jail, or you are shooting someone with NODs, and they will see your laser.

    >people have optics mounted high for night vision
    >high mounted optics become seen as high end because people who can afford night vision use them
    >people who don't even have night vision start buying high mounted optics because it is now a trend
    >they start retroactively justifying their purchases by making shit up about how high optics are objectively better for 'situational awareness' and start looking down on all the plebians who will totally get killed innaboog because their mount is a fraction of an inch lower
its not just about the mount. its about what it represents. also it looks fricking moronic lol.

Higher mounts (>lower 1/3rd) are way more comfortable to shoot especially from a high ready

Well the scam price is one good reason. Its a block of aluminum and they want over $500 for it.
Its also a very very niche accessory that for most people in the world is solving a problem that doesn't exist. If you actually have that problem then you can solve it for a 1/10th of the price. Or, even more realistically its an issued rifle and you dont get to slap random hype beast gear on it anyways.

Maybe cuz the dipshit gay wienersucking goobers upcharged 550 fricking burger tokens for that piece of shit when it costs so little to make that you can buy a q to 1 replica made out of the same grade aluminum for 50 dollars shipped.

First is the price. $500 is absurd. Especially when some Chinese factory (probably the same one they used to make the 'official') was pumping out the same thing for $50 on Amazon. People who bought both have stated how annoyed they are that the GBRS version feels less quality in general than some knockoff.
Second, it doesn't look good. The EOTECH mount looks better proportionally, but no matter how useful this might be on something like a rattler, it just looks very unappealing. People can discount looks and pretend it is some 10x improvement worth the tradeoff, but it's not. Most of these you see are mounted on standard 'pistols' anyway, even when there is a ton of rail. I'd just keep mounting my IR unit at the front of the rail because the offset isn't that extreme, and not worth $500 to 'fix'.
Third, the Unity Fast mount exists, along with other highrise mounts for Nightvision. Not only do they look better, but the Fast mount has a backup ironsight which is nice to use with the front sight post during the day. Even these mounts are far too expensive. I'd argue the Amazon knockoff unity mount is probably a better product than the official GBRS mount.
