Why do most PLA soldiers not wear plate carriers?

because the PLAGF is the least important part of the chinese military and will remain so for the forseeable future, it makes much more sense for china to instead spend that money on their navy, rocket force or air force instead
They will eventually get to upgrading PLAGF kit once they're happy with all their other branches (so in like 10-15 years)

PLA didn't have body armor for a very long time, and still view it as a deployment item. For a lot of the places they deploy, like Tibet and around the Indian border, its high altitude and mountainous where the gains of body armor isn't worth the trouble it causes. Plus, yes its cheaper not to issue it. PAP (their national guard or gendarmerie) wear body armor fairly often, fwiw.

      >The plates are too expensive
No, they aren't. A pair of Chinese level IV plates that past NIJ testing only cost about 300 bucks in where I live.

        Anonymous

For 2.5 million personnel? Plus plates are a perishable item, its not a one-time purchase. 300 bucks is 2200 yuan, which effectively doubles the cost of each soldiers personal equipment, barring their rifle.

chinks can lose 500 million which is 20x ww1+2 combined and it'd still be nothing and they'd still have a billion.

Maybe China can afford to give every soldier a pair of plates if they stop harassing Taiwan and Philippines for one week.

The only thing more moronic than people who think pistol calibers are almost useless at killing people are the people who think historic melee weapons also lack significant stopping power. Yes, you have to be close to use them, and yes, armor drastically reduced their effectiveness, but an unarmored person being hit full on with a mace or getting run through with a sword is going to likely be instantly out of commission as often if not more than someone shot with a rifle.

You might try searching for pictures of PLA soldiers wearing plate carriers, I've only found pictures of paratroopers and special forces wearing plate carriers, and the average soldier seems to only wear a Type 06 Vest.

Real answer: because the PLA is not a real army and hasn’t been for several decades. It’s notoriously corrupt with, at one point, ranks up to General literally up for sale. They don’t actually do training instead they only do parades and propaganda films. Those military exercises they do are the operational extent of their real capabilities. That’s why they never do combat deployments — they can’t do combat and the CCP leadership KNOWS IT.

  21. 3 weeks ago

if you have no intention of deploying them into combat why bother

They'll upgrade their air and sea force first, then their infantry will be able to larp on the ground while just relying on the air superiority. I can already see them now, patting themselves on the back, telling how brave they were as they just called an air strike on an enemy position far away from them in the distance.
