            Y'all fell for the double-bait.
That is the "Sister Ray" cannon installation of Junon Harbor, a city in FF7.
"Sister Ray" because Junon Harbor is the sister-city of the continental capital city.
It fires concentrated energy siphoned directly from the Living Planet, Gaia, itself. Kind of a Spirit Bomb cannon.

Originally built for standoff & bombardment against an alliance of trad & naturalist fantasy-trope holdovers, which opposed industrialization.
Later used, in dark irony, to destroy the embodiments of the Gaia's immune-response, [basically Kaiju monsters] which Sister Ray had helped stir awake in the first place by merely operating.

The Planet's Weapons seem fairly blind to the machinery that bothered them awake, and instead waste time trying to attack ruling figures driving industrialization. Gaia is omniscient to the location and Will of its own souls, after all. But as these key figures are either bunkered up or standing apart from Sister Ray et cetera, the Planet's Weapons perform impressive but empty gestures, before getting blown up by various means.

Because direct fire grenade launchers are not very good weapons for defending your life. They have no capacity, are slow to reload, are heavy, and take almost 3 seconds to travel 200 meters. Grenade launchers are OP for shooting over cover and terrain, and into trenches, not shooting directly at the enemy. Replace the scope with simple lightweight leaf sights and replace programming the ammo with normal impact detonation and you have a good XM29.

The rifle is already the better direct fire weapon in 99% of scenarios, the other 1% being when combatants are grouped together in a bunker or building, which is a niche situation that only happens during urban combat and is something you have to carry on top of your rifle now. You have two direct fire weapons, it makes no sense, just pick the good one. If the XM29 went into service the way it is like in OP-pic, soldiers would just never use the grenade launcher.

      >If the XM29 went into service the way it is like in OP-pic, soldiers would just never use the grenade launcher.
On the contrary, I think they would find any excuse to use up all the ammo in order to lighten their patrol load.

Too early, could work now but it's expensive and soldiers aren't worth it.

Because adding a grenade launcher to a rifle sucks. You get an extra heavy grenade launcher with a useless rifle tacked on to it, and an extra heavy rifle with a useless grenade launcher tacked on to it. Standalone options for both is vastly superior.

20mm grenade launcher is stupid, even if they had got the airburst rounds to work properly it's just not enough payload to be effective, while the 5.56 rifle was annemic due to a short barrel.
Never mine the fact it's fricking huge.

    >Why did this fail /k/?
Because the tactic of teamwork exists. Having one or two guys who are more specialized in weapons and role per squad with a few more at platoon level, with a few more still at company level is always going to BTFO the concept of the "universal infantryman" who can "do it all" because he can't, nor should he. It's the same shit we're seeing with the new XM7 rifle.
    >But muh overmatch!

It's called designated marksmen, armored vehicles, snipers, mortars, artillery, the wild concept known as moving closer, etc. The OICW is a more extreme version of this mindset of autism but still.

      Anonymous

The OICW was a replacement for M203s at the fire team level, it was never at any point meant to be a standard service rifle.

That's what I'm getting at. If they didn't do that and instead did what I say it could've had a chance. Removing the rifle from one out of four soldiers per fireteam is literal pants on head moronic.

I used to have a book full of 20 years of failed new rifle programs. The weirdest thing was that the design styles made them mostly looked like nerf weapons.

      Anonymous

Honestly I could've seen the XM25 work if it was intended to be some kind of company level support weapon that could be held in inventory and used when needed, such as either by being used by the anti armor guys in the weapons squads, swapping out their Jav's for the XM25's, or even by the company mortars if mortars were either considered not useful or not capable due to ROE. Even battalion level through the weapons company or even in the HHC with sniper teams being attached to platoons or companies. Rather than an M24 or M107, they just have the XM25. And when not being used, they just sit either in the companies supply truck or held in the battalions combat trains.

      Anonymous

The XM25 wasn't really that bad at all. It received positive feedback from field trials but was killed politically due to one isolated misfire incident and legal bullshit.
It really is a shame they terminated the program, it's the only "future weapons system" I can think of that was both not moronic conceptually and actually worked when tested.

Why don't they simply have a good dust cover for the two magazine feeds, and make it so you only insert one magazine at the time?
A lot of the stupid weight of this gun is that you have a 1.3 magazine plus a 3 lb magazine both together. It would make more sense that put a grenade magazine in changes the scope automatic for grenade targeting mode and changes the trigger to fire that. Put in bullet magazine, and it changes to aimbot scope. Put both in, and safety is on and scope is off.

If it was designed to only accept one magazine at a time, they could also put the two magazine feeds side-by-side or even share an opening. Like have the smaller opening for the rifle up higher, and so the grenade magazine can't push up that high. Could possible even share some of the receiver, like have it so when the rifle magazine is put in, it disconnects parts of the heavier bolt catch and extra spring that are used for the grenade launcher. So most of the added weight compared to a 20mm semi-automatic grenade launcher winds up just being the extra barrel, an overall larger receiver, and the bit of extras that do these connecting and disconnecting of parts inside the receiver.

      Anonymous

All that kludge and complexity, just to remove the minimal weight of a second magwell. The barrel and bolt are the heavy parts, hence why the barrel on the XM25 was carbon fiber.

        Anonymous

Well yes, you obviously can't share a barrel too. Doesn't mean you give up and don't save weight elsewhere.
But all that weight adds up. Look at how they reduced weight on the Miata. They did autistic things like reducing the weight of the rear view mirror a few grams because it all adds up.
Not having two distinct magwells saves weight. Sharing parts of the receiver, even if it still needs an extra heavier bolt for the 20mm, saves weight. Not having both magazines in at the same time saves weight. Not carrying two separate weapons also saves weight.

The GL portion is ridiculously oversized.
The rifle part is too far forward to be ergonomic.
    But the underlying truths are:
Fudd Brass still think 'rifle marksmanship' competition scores win wars.
Peacetime exercises you can't fire 'blank grenades' so it becomes a dumb lump to carry around for no use, so it gets ignored. The same as all HE weapons, mines, artillery effects etc get ignored while never-deployeds play "capture the flag" fake war-games, because they can't simulate losing half your attack by running headlong into a bank of claymores.
