Why did Putin refuse to take Ukraine on day 1 easily?

Geographically things couldn't have been more perfect for a Russian invasion. It should have been the easiest invasion in history.
Ukraine was already almost surrounded at the start. You just had to push a little south from Belarus with your main army to secure the Polish border and that's it. All Ukrainian forces are in the east so your push is completely unopposed and can be completed in a single day. You then automatically control the Romanian border, connect with Transnitria and are at Odessa from the west. On day 1.
With Ukraine surrounded it's over. There is no chance of any weapons entering. From there you have all the time in the world to do whatever you want to do with the Kiev regime. You can loot the refugees as a bonus and take all their money as they go west, and with anti-Russians fleeing Ukraine becomes more Russian than ever so there won't even be a need for a genocide of non Russians. It's simply perfect in every way.

Putin quite wrongly assumed that the west wasn't going to help Ukraine, so they didn't focus on the western border, instead thinking the entire army would capitulate if they managed to seize the capital in a few days. Most of their budget for buying out the locals seems to have disappeared to corruption in both countries as well, with only one region giving them the warm welcome they were expecting. The entire invasion plan was drawn up on completely inaccurate information and wild assumptions.

Firstly, they attacked during mud season so their heavy vehicles were confined to the roads.
Secondly, being that close to the Polish border means that the Russian forces wouldn't be able to make use of air support, lest a Russian pilot accidentally blow up a Polish AA asset and get their entire force in that region fricked in the ass with a meter-long kielbasa.

Logistics motherfricker what does it mean

They could have taken roads. There are no fortifications in west Ukraine unlike the east.

        Anonymous

The problem with this sort of blyatskrieg is that any light infantry unit with modern ATGMs can just wait for your armor to pass them, then strike your logistics vehicles. Due to the distances involved you simply can't sustain tanks or heavy combat vehicles past 300-400 km into enemy territory without bringing fuel and ammo trucks with you.

It worked for the Americans because they had air superiority (which helped them take out any enemy units with vehicles/strike barracks/assembly points) and were able to paralyze the Iraqi military to the point they didn't know where their units were, what the Americans were doing, or where to to fall back to as a defensive line.

The Ukrainians were able to keep in contact with each other from hour 1, there were never any significant attacks on their civilian communication networks or power grids. I'm sure that the military communications systems they had were temporarily disabled, but that doesn't help when any Ukrainian soldier can just jump on their phone and text their CO in the next town over.

In summary, the Russians may have been able to send a few BTGs towards Moldova, but they would have been harassed the entire way by TDF and at some point (within hours probably) whatever reserve units there were in the west would have established communications with higher commands, let the Russians bypass them, and then ambushed their logistical units.

          Anonymous

More crucially, Russians had "Muh Orders". Fixed battle plans with little room for deviation. Ukrainians could exploit changes in real time, moving far faster and far more unpredictably than the Russians could remotely adjust to.

This will only get worse as the war continues.

NOBODY wants to be the "Fall Guy", so the buck keeps getting passed upward.

            Anonymous

I wouldn't even call it responding in "real time". The Russians were obviously roadbound, all a hypothetical Ukrainian commander in the west would have had to do is grab some reserve units, give them some 80s/90s era ATGMs, and tell them "go to X, Y, Z highways, space yourselves out about 2-3 km, hide in bushes and only attack once the first group of Russian tanks has already passed".

This isn't the sort of situation where you need to be proactively counterattacking or exploiting flanks. You literally have to sit in a bush on the side of the road for a few hours, count tanks until you get to about 10 or 20, then attack anything that's not a tank. You automatically, irrespective of the Russian commander's intent, paralyze his unit.

This is the exact tactic that the Baltic countries have been trained on for years.

    >All Ukrainian forces are in the east so your push is completely unopposed
All Ukrainian forces are in the East because all Russian forces are in the East. It's not easy to just move an army and it's logistical tail without being noticed.
Second, look at the land Russia did take, it's all close to their boarder, to completely cut off Ukraine of Western aid they would have to capture territory over 400km away from their border and then hold it. That's forgetting that Moldova might choose to help for security guarantee's or the west might bring aid through the southern port cities since the Russian offensive isn't there.
This isn't the insta-win you think it is.

      Anonymous

Moldova has no army. The only connection to Romania in the south is a bridge and it was blown up by the Russians. Russia shouldn't have any issues with pinning attacks in the east and maybe even a real faint on Kiev.

        Anonymous

        >Moldova has no army.
And? With NATO troops guaranteeing their safety they'll be fine. Russia was planning to invade them so they would jump at the chance for protection in return for letting NATO supply Ukraine.
        >The only connection to Romania in the south is a bridge and it was blown up by the Russians.
You think NATO can't move supplies across a river.
        >Russia shouldn't have any issues with pinning attacks in the east and maybe even a real faint on Kiev.
So now they are supposed to attack in the East when they don't even have the logistics to attack that deep in the west.
Feint would not work because Russia can move any troops near the NATO boarder let alone enough to invade Ukraine and supply their army without Kyiv finding out.
OP's map would not work because the plan is moronic. It would not cut off Western access.
You would need the magical Russian army that only existed in the heads of people in 2021 to pull off that invasion.

The thing is locals there speak with completely different accent that people in the regions around Dnipro river. The stupid russian homosexuals can’t pronounce Ukrainian words and speak in Russian in homosexual accent (stretching out vowels, ringing “g” sound etc) different to Ukrainian Russian and they can’t blend in with Ukrainians (even the Russian speaking ones) and stand out like a sore thumb. But in Lviv region those “stealthy” dedovshina nonces were akin to zebras with a huge red bullseyes painted on their hollow foreheads.

I doubt that any of them managed to cross the border through two waves of not very welcoming border guards: Ukrainian and Polish. Moreover, the reports about captured vatniks in that region were not numerous. All people in Lviv region have a family member that fought as a “forest brother” (UPA) against the Soviets for a decade after the end of WW2 and they are rather hostile to anybody who speaks russian. Seems like the majority of paradropped saboteurs there got quietly buried in the woods instead of being taken as pows.

They cannot accept the chaos of the world, so this is their way of keeping order, Dolynskyi explained.

      >At the same time, he notes, people with epileptic personality disorder cannot accept criticism and often react violently to it, because it destroys the picture of the order they want to impose.

      >“Obviously, the changes in Ukrainian society – the fact that it is freer, that it will not follow the old regime and socio-political system according to Soviet guidelines, according to which he grew up and the theses from which he still imposes on the people of his country - provoked this sort of rage from Putin. Since these changes go beyond the usual system in his understanding,” the psychiatrist said.

Russia wouldn't be able to supply an army that far west, it'd get bogged down the first 40 miles in because Belarus doesn't have the ability to supply a massive Russian army.

Russia will not be able to secure the entire western Ukrainian border, especially since they'll be completely under NATO drone observation who'll tell the Ukrainians where to hit, when to hit, and how to hit.

Your supply trucks all blow up and your Russian army starves.

Unironically if the Russians had managed to both take and hold Hostomel Airport, there is a real chance that Kyiv would have gotten stormed before the Ukrainian Army had ample chance to ready itself. If the government had been captured or deposed in the first 48 hours of the event, it's far more likely that the situation as it stands would have devolved into if not a rout of the Ukrainians than at least a far more protracted civil war.

    >going through the ultranationalistic Volhynian swamp lands and Galician hills/mountains would be the easiest invasion ever
The Russians barely took the eastern and southern Ukrainian flatlands, where the population is more neutral to Russians. Russians would have been slaughtered in Western Ukraine to the last.

there's a big ass mountain range right where that turning push is on the axis, if you think they had problems with logistics on flat land, an assault thru the carpathian mountains would have been a complete embarrassing failure

This plan has one big flaw. What would be reaction of Polish soldiers and society seeing Ukrainian civilians overrun by tanks at border crossing? Also Polish minority around Lviv. I assure you stance would be "Blood for blood god". Some trigger-happy having Ukrainian wife/girlfriend would start all-out conflict.

Nearly the entire Ukrainian-Belarusian border is made up of the Pripet marshes, a vast wetland along the Pripyat river which undergoes flooding and raspubreastsa, making it difficult for the war of movement Russia tried to pull off.

A Russian tank would get destroyed and pop its turret into NATO territory. And it would trigger article 5

alright then, all Putin needs to do is load the pre-war savegame he did.. or build a time machine, which ever is easier

Am I seeing... a bigger cauldron attempt than all the failed ones? Yeah, sounds super easy, let's cauldron the whole of Ukraine.

Ukrainian troops were all through Ukraine prior to the war and they concentrated where Russians did. You can't just say you would attack where there were no Uks.
Russia wasn't able to advance more than 100km and you are expecting them to advance like 400 or 500km in a place that's even farther away from Russia. See the spaghetti advance nonsense that failed really bad where they tried it.
I mean, Russia wasn't even able to surround Kiev, and Ukraine defeated that attack by themselves. How would this attack be more succesful?

Not to mention, after amassing troops on the border with Ukraine and then invading, Poland would have a very convincing reason to glass the Russian troops if they amassed on the border with Poland, and call for article 5 even if they technically shot first. Plus even without article 5, NATO members would voluntarily support Poland in a fight with Russia in a situation where Poland was not a blatant aggressor.

There are experts who will tell you the intricacies of economic, political, and militaristic factors which lead to the Russian defeats in Ukraine. But the foundation, the reason why Russia is loosing is simple: “We assumed better of ourselves and less of our adversaries.”
History has shown that overestimating your abilities while underestimating your opponent is always a fatal philosophy.

There was a good chance the invasion would get bogged down in the forrests and cut off by partisans. That could leave the entire army isolated from supply lines.

Why didn't Putin just invade Ukraine for real?
This whole "special military operation" is dumb, it's been seven months and he's still holding back the actual Russian military.

The operation alrwady entailed the majority of combat ready professional soldiers. The "real army" you speak of is conscripts and old men who would normally be the first to be fed into the meat grinder. Mobilization now would be a catastrophe. Without senior or elite forces trained and equipped to exploit the gaps created by the conscripts forces the war would become even more costly. Russias looking at a WW1 tier conflict to claim rubble and ghosts.

I certainly would have handled it differently:

    1. Strike critical infrastructure with cruise missiles immediatly.
    2. Heavy bombardment on all ukrainian airfields.
    3. A nuclear strike on Odessa to maximize the shock
    4. Don't move into town centers, wait for missile strikes to paralyze the country first.

      >1. Strike critical infrastructure with cruise missiles immediately.
They tried that and it failed because russian cruise missiles are limited in number and low quality
      >2. Heavy bombardment on all ukrainian airfields.
They tried that and it failed because russian cruise missiles are limited in number and low quality
      >3. A nuclear strike on Odessa to maximize the shock
Congratulations NATO is now nuking you because the genie must never be let out of it's bottle and China has dropped you as an ally completely and might nuke you as well just to prove they're one of the cool kids
