You can be in hospice as long as you want so long as a doctor says you're going to die in the next 6 months. Ideally someone should be on hospice as soon as they commit to comfort care only, as hospice is more of a financial benefit and coordination of care system than anything else. Doctors will also sometimes lie and say they expect someone to die in 6 months then act surprised when they're still alive, at which point they can just give 2 month extensions until you actually die. That being said, doctors also suck at predicting when someone will die and patient often "graduate" hospice because guessing when someone will die is hard. Hospice was probably the best solution for Paul, and cancer patients who do go on hospice actually live longer than those who don't because they don't spend their final weeks and months poisoning themselves with chemo.

Also most hospice patient die in under 2 weeks, and some within hours of joining hospice because Americans ignore, deny, or are sometimes totally unaware of their own mortality.

Imagine the place where the old man goes to die in the movie Onions Green. Only without the pleasant music and kind staff. Also lots of pain in between being doped into a stupor of you can afford that.

Hospice is a program not a place - they will go to your home. They'll even buy your family a hospital bed and put it in your house. If your family choses to house you in a nursing home when you are on hospice that's not the hospital's fault, you just have a shitty family that doesn't want to deal with the inconvenience of your mortality.

I just recently did home hospice for my Dad, luckily it was reasonably quick. I don't blame a lot of people for choosing a nursing home, the reality is that unless you have a large family willing to help and are extremely well off it's nearly impossible to do yourself.

Even for two fit people when one has a job providing 24/7 care is exhausting. That's why we had home hospice care for my father (who asked if I could off him but other relatives objected). He was a WWII vet with a practical attitude toward life and death.

You stupid frick most hospice programs are home hospice. A nurse and caregiver taker care of you while you die at the end of your life in your house, visiting periodically in coordination with your family. You know, instead of having to suck start a shotgun in your bathtub because the pain of your cancer is so excruciating you can't walk and whenever you eat you throw up, but your socialist shit hole government can't be bothered to actually spend resources on your end of life care. You do understand that people die, right? Like eventually something kills you, and 90% of the time it's some stupid 6 month plus long process and not the "die in muh sleep" bullshit that boomers wish for? You are killed by DISEASES and they cannot be STOPPED, only delayed. At some point sending your fat demented diabetic heart failure ass to the hospital stops being a valid strategy and you go home and die. If you're lucky your family can afford someone like me and my agency to give you drugs, caregivers, training for symptom management, and TLC so you don't have to use the shotgun in the bathtub

Hospice is a program for people who have less than 6 months to live. It focuses on reducing pain and symptoms instead of trying to treat their terminal illness. Most people on hospice leave the hospital and get care at home from a nurse trained specifically in hospice with the intent of dying at home and with their family. Hospice also focuses on allowing you to do shit you like doing with your terminal illness, and will go as far as giving people amphetamines and shit so they have the energy to do the things they enjoy during their final days. IDK if the bongs have a similar program but it wouldn't surprise me.

its where you send someone when they are dying and they don't want to do any procedures to extend their life, they just want to be comfortable. If someone has advanced pancreatic cancer like paul the odds of them getting better are basically zero so no point in him being in the hospital undergoing chemo

Hospice will send a nurse to the home if there is someone willing to take care of the patient and they will be able to pass in their own bed at their own pace. If you send someone to a hospice facility they will tend to make them permanently comfortable pretty quickly.

As others have said, it's a type of program for people who are dying and aren't expected to recover. My grandmother had a series of strokes, and at the end had a bad one that she did not recover from. She didn't want to die at the hospital, so the hospice program set her up with a hospital bed and a nurse to come visit her, and basically had her loaded up on morphine until she passed. My family basically all took turns staying with her until the end. It was rough as shit but better than her being surrounded by strangers in a strange place.

they never mention how they prepared the cache which seems to defeat the point. It doesn't look like they did anything super crazy like filling the entire thing with grease or encasing it in a block of wax.

does your country not have terminal diseases?

I don't get why people are so autistic about palliative care (like those stories of families making nurses keep trying to restart the heart of some 120 year old woman with multiple organ failure until their chest has caved in). I get that is pretty grim to see your loved one have no chance to recover (I've experienced that myself 🙁 ) but its better than putting them through hell in their final days just to make yourself feel better.

The Victorians knew how to live and how to die in that regard.

It's a care house where they send people who with terminal illnesses.
They're more like a retirement home than a hospital, and designed to make sure someone can live their last days in comfort, while still having trained medical help nearby if things suddenly go wrong.
It's not exclusive to the US, we have them here in the Netherlands as well.

Hospice is more of a condition than a place. If you own a home they'll come to you, and in the end push you off with morphine into the abyss.

Yeah that's pretty much the sum of it. Sometimes hospice takes place at a care facility though because they can't safely stay in their home though.

But if you ever wind up hearing discussion about being put in a nursing home, go on a nice cruise, enjoy tons of hookers and try every drug you've ever wanted to, then suck start your favorite gun. Life only goes downhill from there.

Most doctors aren't straight forward lying. It's just highly inaccurate, because it depends on a lot of factors, one of which is the patient's mental fortitude.

I know fancy words like dysdiadochokinesia, borborygmus, or pseudopseudohypoparathyroidism.

I don't really care if people hate doctors, although I find it funny that they always come back. I don't make anyone come and see me except for the crazy people I strap down to a bed and tell that I work for the Postal Inspection Service (just to really frick with their delusions). I think most people would have a better experience with their doctor if they knew (and actually believed) a few things.

          1. No disease can be cured, only slowed or prevented. You are mortal and the older you get the more difficult of a task this becomes.
          2. The best way to prevent disease is exercise, clean living, sleep, and diet, in order of importance. If you don't want to take pills do these things, and actually do them, not take a walk every Friday and eat one less Salisbury steak.
          3. Take pills. Or don't. If you don't want to take pills just say no, it makes both of our jobs much easier. If you are doing the four things above and your problem hasn't gotten better and you don't want to take pills, then you're going to have to live with it - I left my staff of healing in the car and I'm too lazy to go out and get it.
          4. Maybe the most important one here - do not lie. I absolutely do not give a frick what you do. I would struggle to care less if you have your gay frickbuddy ram fentanyl up your ass with his dick - all I would have to offer is a spray to no die of fentanyl and a pill to not get aids. When I go home, I do my absolute best to not think about work, which means not thinking about whatever debaucherous shit you told me gets you off.

            >1. No disease can be cured, only slowed or prevented
Tons of diseases can be cured, moron. There's a reason we don't have leper colonies anymore.

              Anonymous

Infections can largely be cured (although to your point the leprosy that you think of, type 2 reaction leprosy, is notoriously difficult to cure and pretty much incurable outside the US and Europe. Leper colonies went away because of sanitation, not medicine), although many viruses like HIV, herpes, even chicken pox cannot be fully rid from the body. Injuries can heal although the body never fully recovers from damage to the tendons, joints, or soft tissues (this is why anyone over 50 who carried a ruck sack is currently experiencing arthritis in their knees). All other diseases can only be slowed, not stopped. Diabetes, heart disease, dementia, kidney disease, all of it marches on. Even cancer, which is often "cured", cannot truly go away except in the lucky few where it is caught very early (and in a few blood cancers). Chemo cannot kill every single living caner cell out of the trillions. The goal of cancer treatment is to kill the cancer enough that something else will take you before the cancer comes back. The diseases that actually kill people, however, not sinus infections and scrapped knees, cannot be stopped, only slowed and sometimes to a crawl, but the forward march of damage never stops.

Terminal patients frequently rally for months. Then it's off a cliff when the rally is over and they're gone within weeks.

I watched my mom waste away for 4 years after her cancer diagnoses. I have told myself ever since then that I will end things myself if I get to the point where my only option left is to lay in bed while my kidneys fail and I dehydrate to death.

      [...]
Honesty if I was given the news that I have a terminal illness I'd just quietly take a trip to my favorite camping spot and suck start a benelli. Seems like it'd save the emotional and financial burden for my family. Perhaps I'll even tell them where my body is, if they really want that level of closure but I'm fine rotting away innawoods

After mother had to be in a home for an extended period and my own serious health issue I've come to realize that I'll have to answer that question myself one day. The only mitigating factor is that I'm not as scared of death as when I was younger. Also there's a slight anticipation about seeing what's next. No real evidence of course just an increasingly firm belief that there IS something.

I'm honestly not scared of death, but goddamn is it taking a while. I'm not going out by my own hand, I've worked healthcare and the rally can happen, but I guess I'll keep playing video games and having a beer until it goes north or south.
Frick, I hope if it went south they'd drug me up so much that I'm feeling great.

It's pronounced cash-ay as to verbally distinguish what you're talking about immediately, despite being incorrect formally.

1797, "hiding place," from French Canadian trappers' slang, "hiding place for stores and provisions" (1660s), a back-formation from French cacher "to hide, conceal" (13c., Old French cachier), from Vulgar Latin *coacticare "store up, collect, compress," frequentative of Latin coactare "constrain," from coactus, past participle of cogere "to collect," literally "to drive together," from com- "together" (see co-) + agere "to set in motion, drive; to do, perform" (from PIE root *ag- "to drive, draw out or forth, move"). The sense was extended by 1830s to "anything stored in a hiding place."
    also from 1797

    Adjective
caché (feminine cachée, masculine plural cachés, feminine plural cachées)
    hidden

The life expectancy is as low as it is because of poor black people. I'm not kidding and I'm not trying to be racist, look up the statistics yourself. I have been told many reasons why this is in my schooling, I'm not going to go into it, but the fact is that many poor black people never see a doctor once in their adult lives until they are actively having a heart attack or stroke. Black people are as fat and stupid as white people, but the fact is that the pills big pharma have made to reverse the consequences of our own gluttony and ignorance work, and they work shockingly well. If you never get healthcare until you are dying, there is not much that can be done at that point, and this is the case for black folk much more than white folk. Black-on-black violence is a non-trivial component of lowering the life expectancy as well.

It really is crazy how much more safe, well educated, and healthy America is when you remove certain clustered outliers.

And Paul isn't obese, which is the main reason age expectancy is lower.

                >because of poor black
you are moronic, black people don;t make up enough of the population to lower life expectancy anywhere near as much as poor health, poverty, obesity and cancer.

I was genuinely sorry to see how something as simple as a 24 year old poptart sealed under the ground for like 15 years tasting good to him nearly moved the guy to tears. Awesome people like this don't deserve to suffer this shit.

You really wanna be here forever? I think the long decline is more depressing. You get ~20 nice conscious years, then shit starts hurting more and more for 50 years till you die. I wish one day you would just vanish into thin air before getting too sick.

Counter argument; non MRE pop tarts lack essential preservatives to sustain Paul's life, thus why he had to dive into his buried reserves.
