The taste and convenience of US MREs shits on basically everyone else's. Probably only Australia comes close, with rations that are tastier and probably better for you, but generally less convenient and only in 24h packs, not meal packs.
A lot of the UK ones are made by some of the same companies, lots of the meals are meat, rice, potatoes and sauce etc.

The US genuinely is ugly, and when it's not ugly, it's sterile or kitschy. It wasn't always like that, though. US cities had some fantastic architecture, but a lot of those buildings have either been torn down or had their facades changed to something soulless. There's still some nice architecture to be found, but it's more individual buildings among a sea of soulless shit.
Also, I'm not saying this to "own" the US or anything. I genuinely think it's sad.
There's a similar pattern here in Europe, but the main difference is that our cities obviously have retained more of their old architecture, given that our countries are much older. The ones that god bombed into oblivion during the war and rebuilt in a modern or functionalist style, are every bit as ugly as many American cities.

For me, its King Oscar Mediterranean Style. The reason deenz are great for PrepHole is you can take the olive oil, put it in a pan, and use it to fry eggs. I 3d printed a very sturdy egg carrier so they won't have any chance of getting smashed in my pack, and it lets me have eggs in the morning with a can of deenz.
To be fair, I've never see any but the extra virgin olive oil and Mediterranean ones. I know I'd love the tomato sauce ones, because I love mackarel in tomato sauce.

My friend gave me a French ration and I ate it out in my blind. Was flat out the best I've ever had and the Dutch24 was a close second probably. Italian one was pretty mediocre but the cordial was very cool. I will probably get more French ones for next season as even though esbit stoves are obnoxious to use compared to a retort, it shits all over US rations.

It was the only foreign thing in that monstrous extended range pack. It was absurdly good. Big actual chunks of non mechanically separated chicken, and mushrooms that had the texture of actual cooked mushrooms not from a can.
I don't think it had any jelly? I don't remember and I don't see any in my photos. This thing was some sort of fruit bar and it was great. The banana bar was also top tier. I'd buy both if I could find them here.
It did have this fruit bar sorta thing, found the photo. Usually a ration has something in it I don't love but this French one was 10/10 all the way through. Even the coffee was great.
I actually shot my first deer of the season while the esbit was steaming away. Middle of the day too when activity is usually nonexistent.
The ostrich was amazing in my French ration. The entire thing was amazing. As far as civilian use is concerned at least, I think its my favorite ration just for the plethora of great tasting food it has. Its like one of those overly expensive worldwide food sampler boxes you pay 20+ bucks for, except its actually worth it.

This. I'm italian and I don't understand why so many MRE youtubers like to pretend the italian mre is anything good. It's ok at best and the food inside unlike other militaries isn't even something engeneered for the mre in the first place, they are literally discount store items (usually ristora brand) packaged with a blank label.
We put a shitton of R&D into making a nutrient and calorically dense food that is shelf stable for stupid amounts of time that takes minimal prep in crude conditions then tried to make it resemble common comfort foods as the final requirement. It's a good survival food first, and a minimal comfort second. It's better from a mental perspective to have shitty cardboard pizza than shitty canned dog food, which is basically where we'd have gone if we removed the comfort aspect.

I've sampled a few MREs from different countries. Here is my conclusion.
American MREs are nothing but shelf stable gas station food. That shit you never buy.
Most others countries already have a lot of shelf stable grab they just pack in an MRE. Pattes, crackers, cans of meat or buckwheat, stuff you can buy at a grocery store.
If you ever go into an ethnic store, you'll find most of the ingredients in European MREs.
Is this a projection? Why make a picture about that when the people in your country relatively indulge on that same culture and being no different than a mutt themselves?
US MREs are designed for actual wars and not just something to feed troops on a weekend training mission. Tmk US doctrine is troops should be eating them for no more than 2-3 weeks until field kitchens can be established. US MREs are also designed iirc to have a 65% survival rate being thrown 90ft out of the back of a passing C-130 with no chute or, again iirc, 95% survival rate being dropped like pic related. They also (if stored correctly) have an almost indefinite shelf life. Almost all other rations from other nations seem to be just random commercial foods shoved into a green/brown box, as such do not meet the listed above criteria.

A couple of times a year, there's this military outlet that sets up shop in my town for a few weeks, and they sell a shitload of old, mostly used military equipment/surplus, both from my country and various other European countries (including eastern Europe), along with some American stuff. Some of it dates back to the 50s. I've bought some stuff that's useful for camping, along with a couple of eastern European helmets that have the names of the previous users written on the inside.
Anyway, they usually have MREs at half price, and while I have no particular interest in eating shelf-stable crap, I guess it would be fun to try just to see what it's like.
I still haven't seen any Chinese crap so far, though.

You'd be surprised how long food lasts when it's stored properly and without container degradation leeching into the food like with metal cans, the only thing I'd be concerned about it is the fats and oils going rancid.

Yeah, one thing I can't understand, is how the hell they're still able to dig up surplus items, many unused, that are over 60 years old, but the supply seems to be endless. To be fair, about 60% of the stuff they sell are reproductions or just generic military-styled gear of varying quality, but there's always enough old stuff there to make it interesting.
I mean, they sell literally anything, including used shovels, boots, motorcycle helmets and motorcycle jacket, ammo boxes, all kinds of uniforms, caps and patches, radio equipment, huge insulated food containers, socks, and even piles of monitors from the 90s. Pretty much anything they can get their hands on that is legal to sell.
Probably a pretty easy task for the US considering that the military has been the main portion of their budget for the longest time. Still it's pretty interesting to see smaller euro countries still have milsurp stock in the year of our Lord 2023.
Another thing that might be interesting to you is the fact that we have tons and tons of Mausers floating around. Almost every family either has a Mauser in their attic, or grandfather who owned one or used one in the military.
Back during the war, we were occupied by the Germans, and when the war ended, all of their military equipment was left behind and adopted by our military. That included something like 300k Mausers, many of which were sold to conscripts at the end of their service for a symbolic sum.
Unfortunately, almost all of them were rechambered to fit NATO standards, so they're not original, but most of them retain their original markings, including the German eagle, the swastika and the serial numbers. They're quite cheap too, at least by my country's standards.

As someone who traded many a MRE with Euro compatriots, they're not all that's cracked out to be. American MREs blow damn near anything out of the water as far as operational capacity goes, Euro MREs are alright and most of the time substitutes for proper chow and not particularly good ones at that. Euros rarely had anything comparable to our kitchens and DFACs when applicable, there were several times we had a fucking fresh salad bar in the middle of Afghanistan. Euros who didn't eat with us often times had to just heat up their MREs.

No, I'm just saying MREs need to be put in context of their use. Euro MREs are better in many regards (country dependent a lot of E. Euro MREs suck dick) but are substitutes to proper kitchen foods. American MREs are calorie and nutrient dense and intended to be used in the field when kitchens aren't available. Longest I went at any point in Afghanistan eating MREs straight was 6-7 days, after that we had freshly cooked food every day we weren't on patrol.
When we're talking about European MREs, I assume we're referring to western Europe. Of course, the standards here vary, based on what part of Europe we're talking about, with Scandinavia being particularly autistic about comfort and quality, while Med countries tend to lean more towards canned food that is still somewhat decent.
I'm Scandinavian, and our rations are considered quite good. Hell, half the stuff in the rations I've seen consists of commercial brands you can buy at your local supermarket, and a main course consisting of freeze dried food based on traditional dishes, with some faux-international stuff thrown in there for good measure. There are also some American food items in there, like Jack Links and the infamous shelf stable pizza that you Americans came up with.
I've also heard that American MREs are terrible for your digestive system. To be fair, I think this is a gross exaggeration and mostly a joke, but it shouldn't really be a factor at all, considering constipation and diarrhea should be the last things on your mind if you're in a situation where you have to rely on MREs for sustenance.
As regards in field catering.. No contest. You guys have the best by miles.
In terms of field rations though? Seriously, your stuff is shit tier. Only thing I ever found in them I liked was the jalapeno cheese. There is not a single European ration I wouldn't take over a US MRE and most of the Mid-East knes I sampled were superior also. I suppose your B echelon support being so much better makes the packaged ration less of a concern to your planners.
US MREs are substantially more stable and tolerant of extreme conditions then European ones, since as you say, the US places a big emphasis on having the logistical train to do field catering, both from a morale point of view and a simple cost effectiveness point of view, while a Euro army's expeditionary forces might have to actually subsist off MREs for a longer period. US MREs are intended for either short term while logistics are kicking into action or extreme conditions where you can't maintain the logistical train effectively. Both paths make sense considering the surrounding military, but it does impose a bunch of challenges on the US MRE that most Euro ones wouldn't be able to pass, certainly not with their full menu options.

I had a bowl of fresh local fruit on buttered oatmeal for breakfast. I made chili with beans and rice from scratch for lunch. Dinner was chicken creole and a fat salad of mixed greens with a vinaigrette. I'm poor as shit, none of this is unusual food.
Sometimes for snacks I'll eat a peanut butter and honey sandwich in whole grain bread. Or a tuna-melt for a comfy classic.

MRE's are good. Really not any bad meals anymore. I think the concept pf "field stripping" them is stupid and you are better off with trail mix and peanut butter if on a long patrol but if supply lines aren't a problem they aren't so bad.
I used to hoard the kosher and halal MREs, we didn't have many of those people but we always got a fixed amount of meals regardless. I ate them for 3 years after separation when I was hiking or fishing or working. They were pretty good.

The taste and convenience of US MREs shits on basically everyone else's. US cities had some fantastic architecture, but a lot of those buildings have either been torn down or had their facades changed to something soulless. There's still some nice architecture to be found, but it's more individual buildings among a sea of soulless shit.

I 3d printed a very sturdy egg carrier so they won't have any chance of getting smashed in my pack, and it lets me have eggs in the morning with a can of deenz.

My friend gave me a French ration and I ate it out in my blind. Was flat out the best I've ever had and the Dutch24 was a close second probably. Italian one was pretty mediocre but the cordial was very cool. I will probably get more French ones for next season as even though esbit stoves are obnoxious to use compared to a retort, it shits all over US rations.
Only odd thing about the French one is the lack of included utensil. So I made one while it was cooking.

It did have this fruit bar sorta thing, found the photo. Usually a ration has something in it I don't love but this French one was 10/10 all the way through. Even the coffee was great.

The Italian one by comparison was nothing compared to the French. This was indistinguishable from chef boyardee.

The ostrich was amazing in my French ration. The entire thing was amazing. As far as civilian use is concerned at least, I think its my favorite ration just for the plethora of great tasting food it has. Its like one of those overly expensive worldwide food sampler boxes you pay 20+ bucks for, except its actually worth it.
Completely agree. If you separated it from the box and put it in a gift basket I don't think anyone would bat an eye or think it was military.
I didn't use all the esbit blocks either, so I kept them and they store perfectly inside a bundeswher esbit stove, along with a pack of matches. Its a very compact little kit.

I really like squid but something about that can. I took one bite and couldn't do it. Perhaps the can had spoiled but it was a fairly up to date pack so that seems unlikely.
It was very cold and snowing hard here so between both mains I ended up using all the blocks. Left the stove in my blind in case I ever need one out there though.

We put a shitton of R&D into making a nutrient and calorically dense food that is shelf stable for stupid amounts of time that takes minimal prep in crude conditions then tried to make it resemble common comfort foods as the final requirement. It's a good survival food first, and a minimal comfort second. It's better from a mental perspective to have shitty cardboard pizza than shitty canned dog food, which is basically where we'd have gone if we removed the comfort aspect.

I've sampled a few MREs from different countries. Here is my conclusion.
American MREs are nothing but shelf stable gas station food. That shit you never buy.
Most others countries already have a lot of shelf stable grab they just pack in an MRE. Pattes, crackers, cans of meat or buckwheat, stuff you can buy at a grocery store.
If you ever go into an ethnic store, you'll find most of the ingredients in European MREs.

US MREs are designed for actual wars and not just something to feed troops on a weekend training mission. Tmk US doctrine is troops should be eating them for no more than 2-3 weeks until field kitchens can be established. US MREs are also designed iirc to have a 65% survival rate being thrown 90ft out of the back of a passing C-130 with no chute or, again iirc, 95% survival rate being dropped like pic related. They also (if stored correctly) have an almost indefinite shelf life. Almost all other rations from other nations seem to be just random commercial foods shoved into a green/brown box, as such do not meet the listed above criteria.

Weren't HDRs dumped out the back of C-17s from several thousand feet during the first months of Afghanistan? They originally used parachutes, and then discovered that you could just cut slits in the cases and slide them off the ramp.

A couple of times a year, there's this military outlet that sets up shop in my town for a few weeks, and they sell a shitload of old, mostly used military equipment/surplus, both from my country and various other European countries (including eastern Europe), along with some American stuff. Some of it dates back to the 50s. I've bought some stuff that's useful for camping, along with a couple of eastern European helmets that have the names of the previous users written on the inside.
Anyway, they usually have MREs at half price, and while I have no particular interest in eating shelf-stable crap, I guess it would be fun to try just to see what it's like.
I still haven't seen any Chinese crap so far, though.
That's pretty cool, my military outlet sold out of their milsurp stock a long time ago and really only sells reproduction stuff and workwear. You'd be surprised how long food lasts when it's stored properly and without container degradation leeching into the food like with metal cans, the only thing I'd be concerned about it is the fats and oils going rancid.

Yeah, one thing I can't understand, is how the hell they're still able to dig up surplus items, many unused, that are over 60 years old, but the supply seems to be endless. To be fair, about 60% of the stuff they sell are reproductions or just generic military-styled gear of varying quality, but there's always enough old stuff there to make it interesting.
I mean, they sell literally anything, including used shovels, boots, motorcycle helmets and motorcycle jacket, ammo boxes, all kinds of uniforms, caps and patches, radio equipment, huge insulated food containers, socks, and even piles of monitors from the 90s. Pretty much anything they can get their hands on that is legal to sell.
Probably a pretty easy task for the US considering that the military has been the main portion of their budget for the longest time. Still it's pretty interesting to see smaller euro countries still have milsurp stock in the year of our Lord 2023.
Another thing that might be interesting to you is the fact that we have tons and tons of Mausers floating around. Almost every family either has a Mauser in their attic, or grandfather who owned one or used one in the military.
Back during the war, we were occupied by the Germans, and when the war ended, all of their military equipment was left behind and adopted by our military. That included something like 300k Mausers, many of which were sold to conscripts at the end of their service for a symbolic sum.
Unfortunately, almost all of them were rechambered to fit NATO standards, so they're not original, but most of them retain their original markings, including the German eagle, the swastika and the serial numbers. They're quite cheap too, at least by my country's standards.

As someone who traded many a MRE with Euro compatriots, they're not all that's cracked out to be. American MREs blow damn near anything out of the water as far as operational capacity goes, Euro MREs are alright and most of the time substitutes for proper chow and not particularly good ones at that. Euros rarely had anything comparable to our kitchens and DFACs when applicable, there were several times we had a fucking fresh salad bar in the middle of Afghanistan. Euros who didn't eat with us often times had to just heat up their MREs.

No, I'm just saying MREs need to be put in context of their use. Euro MREs are better in many regards (country dependent a lot of E. Euro MREs suck dick) but are substitutes to proper kitchen foods. American MREs are calorie and nutrient dense and intended to be used in the field when kitchens aren't available. Longest I went at any point in Afghanistan eating MREs straight was 6-7 days, after that we had freshly cooked food every day we weren't on patrol.
When we're talking about European MREs, I assume we're referring to western Europe. Of course, the standards here vary, based on what part of Europe we're talking about, with Scandinavia being particularly autistic about comfort and quality, while Med countries tend to lean more towards canned food that is still somewhat decent.
I'm Scandinavian, and our rations are considered quite good. Hell, half the stuff in the rations I've seen consists of commercial brands you can buy at your local supermarket, and a main course consisting of freeze dried food based on traditional dishes, with some faux-international stuff thrown in there for good measure. There are also some American food items in there, like Jack Links and the infamous shelf stable pizza that you Americans came up with.
I've also heard that American MREs are terrible for your digestive system. To be fair, I think this is a gross exaggeration and mostly a joke, but it shouldn't really be a factor at all, considering constipation and diarrhea should be the last things on your mind if you're in a situation where you have to rely on MREs for sustenance.
As regards in field catering.. No contest. You guys have the best by miles.
In terms of field rations though? Seriously, your stuff is shit tier. Only thing I ever found in them I liked was the jalapeno cheese. There is not a single European ration I wouldn't take over a US MRE and most of the Mid-East knes I sampled were superior also. I suppose your B echelon support being so much better makes the packaged ration less of a concern to your planners.
US MREs are substantially more stable and tolerant of extreme conditions then European ones, since as you say, the US places a big emphasis on having the logistical train to do field catering, both from a morale point of view and a simple cost effectiveness point of view, while a Euro army's expeditionary forces might have to actually subsist off MREs for a longer period. US MREs are intended for either short term while logistics are kicking into action or extreme conditions where you can't maintain the logistical train effectively. Both paths make sense considering the surrounding military, but it does impose a bunch of challenges on the US MRE that most Euro ones wouldn't be able to pass, certainly not with their full menu options.

There is simply no way for them to conceptualize such things. All you know is fatfuck food, candy, and ranch dressing, and assume that's all we eat.
I had a bowl of fresh local fruit on buttered oatmeal for breakfast. I made chili with beans and rice from scratch for lunch. Dinner was chicken creole and a fat salad of mixed greens with a vinaigrette. I'm poor as shit, none of this is unusual food.
Sometimes for snacks I'll eat a peanut butter and honey sandwich in whole grain bread. Or a tuna-melt for a comfy classic.

MRE's are good. Really not any bad meals anymore. I think the concept pf "field stripping" them is stupid and you are better off with trail mix and peanut butter if on a long patrol but if supply lines aren't a problem they aren't so bad.
I used to hoard the kosher and halal MREs, we didn't have many of those people but we always got a fixed amount of meals regardless. I ate them for 3 years after separation when I was hiking or fishing or working. They were pretty good.
