Sub launched ballistic missiles are shorter range. They're actually not ICBMs but SLBMs (Sub launched ballistic missiles) and need to be smaller to fit in the sub. On the flip side, subs can travel so they don't need to cross continents.
They longer the missiles a sub carries the larger in diameter the subs have to be.
Anyways ranges are similar. Latest Tridents have longer range than older Minuteman while slightly shorter range than newest Minuteman.
The reason Trident can be stubbier and fatter is the aerospike that reduces drag. Minuteman doesn't need it because it doesn't have length/size restrictions being based in silos, so they can make them longer.

Both Russian and US SLBMs can be launched while moored pierside and strike the other's continent. They are truly "intercontinental" ballistic missiles.
because length is a more serious restriction in a submarine than width. if you make the missile longer you have to make THE WHOLE submarine wider (or only carry them in the sail). if you make the missiles wider the only thing that happens is you carry slightly fewer missiles or your sub is longer, which is much easier to accommodate.
I know it’s impractical but I want there to be satellites launched to orbit from submarines. And aircraft carrier subs. Maybe a sub that launches spaceplanes for fractional bombardment or ASAT purposes.
>And aircraft carrier subs
was a thing, japan made a couple during wwii. I wish they'd come back now that subs are so much larger and we have vtol planes and helicopters
This is possible now a days due to the compactness of drones and the ease of recovery for them. Subs are already moving towards having underwater drones anyway to help with detection and attack.

>fighter sweep moves in to clear airspace for strike >enemy scrambles appropriate number of fighters to counter >suddenly one gajirrion drones launch from the sea and the scrambled fighters are outnumbered
Sounds pretty effective.

It doesn’t really matter where you are in the world, you are in range of at least one of the boats deployed. The only reason we go out is so no one can kill all the US nukes before we glass their country.
Solids are fat, the burn duration of a solid rocket motor is usually proportionate to its thiccness. Any ICBM is most efficiently got into near-orbit with continuous burn of several minutes, divide by number of stages and factor radial deflagration rate of propellant and chode is found to be optimal. Similar for Iskander etc.
best korea just unlocked the delta class tech tree. oh no burger bros, the superior koreans are catching up. soon all of california will burn before the mighty kim jong fat
The Soviets made it work with their later Delta IV design.
For a Soviet definition 'making it work', which means teh boat didn'T sound like a dump truck full of steel pips, and the missiles only sometimes caught fire before launch.
>air to air missile >ground to air missile >air to ground missile >ground to ground missile >anti-ship missiles >underwater missiles
when will we have underground to underground missiles?
Because submarines are black.

Begone with your cuck fantasies.
mutt's law
fitment
It's not longer diameter, it's shorter length. SLBMs are chodes that have to start right next to the target.
Just make larger submarines
Дa Бpeжнeв
Tridents are shorter than Minuteman.
If we just use US examples for comparison.
But Trident is always fatter in diameter.

TRIDENT D5 = 7,500 estimated mile range
Right next to the target. Okay, dumb anon.
>ground launched
>big space
>SLBM
>small space
Comprende?

Trident II D5 has a range of ~7500km to ~13500km depending on how many warheads you want to put on it.
That's well within the category of a "real" ICBM by definition.
Just because some modern SLBMs can only go ~500km doesn't mean that's what the US's SLBMs can do.
> An intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) is a ballistic missile with a range greater than 5,500 kilometres
pic related
Neat, never seen a chart like that. It helps explain why the US was so willing to go down to 6-4 MIRVs per Trident for the last real nuke treaty
>Just because some modern SLBMs can only go ~500km
kek was that a jab at the south korean SLBMs?
There's only three countries SK would want to hit and 500km is enough to reach the majority of them without a long trip.
Smaller missiles for smaller submarines.
Shorter ranges for a country whose main threats are right next door.
Makes sense.
SLBM's are a subset of ICBM's fucktardo.
They are a subset of ballistic missiles but since they can't fire continent to continent they can't be called Intercontinental ballistic missiles.
Prove me wrong.
Wrong
> Short-range ballistic missile (SRBM): Range from 300 to 1,000 kilometres
> Medium-range ballistic missile (MRBM): Range from 1,000 to 3,500 kilometres
> Intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) or long-range ballistic missile (LRBM): Range from 3,500 to 5,500 kilometres
> Intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM): Range greater than 5,500 kilometres
SLBMs can be ANY of those as long as they're launched from a submarine.
Both Russian and US SLBMs can be launched while moored pierside and strike the other's continent. They are truly "intercontinental" ballistic missiles.
but they can fire ocean to ocean
Not always, see
An SLBM is ANY ballistic missile that is submarine-launched.
The most notable SLBMs happen to ICBMs, but there are SRBM SLBMs, MRBM SLBMs, and IRBM/LRBM SLBMs.

>his country doesn’t have skyscraper sized submarines
ngmi
we do, though.
>Different organizations from the United States and Europe define skyscrapers as buildings at least 150 m (490 ft) in height or taller
huh
>MBAs
>When will they learn?
The proportional difference between the people in the bridge and the trucks loading supplies onto the sub irritates me like crazy
looks like venture bros
What if you built the silos along the length of the submarine, and for launch you flipped the submarine to stand on its tail?
what if you didn't ask a retarded question?
What if you shut the fuck up?
what if you killed yourself?

the thread would get better.

Somehow the only correct answers ITT.

you're a short missile
Can you be in the missile compartment when launching a missile?
it would be extremely painful
It would be extremely painful.
submarine not too tall

Superiors nations know SSBM lenght limitation is not about hull diameter, but sail height.
where do u put your bridge?
i like the little cutout to make the sub fit in the door
On subs like these what do the little holes on the sides do?
Probably drain holes so water and air can escape during diving and surfacing operations
best korea just unlocked the delta class tech tree. oh no burger bros, the superior koreans are catching up. soon all of california will burn before the mighty kim jong fat
The cope hump...
please understand, they can't roll steel to a large enough thickness and diameter to make the hull plating if they make it full missile length.
The Soviets made it work with their later Delta IV design.

when Underrail becomes reality and the Decent happens.
not alot of room in a sub for a missile to stretch out vertically, basically
not pointy, boohoo muh scary submarines
