Mini-14. Hollywood loves putting Mini-14s into whatever futuristic shells they can because Minis apparently don't give a frick about how dirty/fricked up the blanks are, they just keep firing/cycling without a hitch. Movie armorers call them the Jamless Wonder because of it.

Chances are, if a movie features some funky future rifle that you can't see the action of, it's probably a Mini-14 inside.

The same reason why everybody wears motorcycle helmets instead of actual combat gear. Hollywood 'creative' types know nothing about anything, and go with whatever they see is scariest or the most sci-fi looking. The problem is that a generation of these useless eaters was raised on a media diet generated by equally oxygen-wasting dipshits. That's why nothing is original, everything is stupid, and why absolutely anything made anymore is by committee to 'make line go up' instead of telling an actual story.

      Anonymous

Problem is "actual combat gear" (a) does not look futuristic and (b) in fact mostly looks gay as frick.
The bike helmet is just a stand-in for a futuristic combat helmet that works by alien science magic or some shit.

        Anonymous

its also that the motorbike helmet with some bits glued to it costs 1/4 of what a decent combat helmet does, and when you're kitting out 25 mooks for the scene, that's a dent in your budget.
also, you can order them in bulk for delivery yesterday, which is typical hollywood "we need this instantly" schedules.

sure they do. they know they can fire the armorer of the walking dead after season 1, and still get people to watch 10 seasons, 2 spin offs, a movie and a game. why would they literally waste their money?

The funny thing is that SC isn't even that bad by sci-fi standards, a lot of the guns have stupid details but at least CIG understands how a gun physically works, which is better than most sci-fi designers can say.

Yeah, it's 90% aesthetic issues, fundamentally the firearms in game are fine for the most part, but visually a lot of them feel like they're just overdesigned.
Just imagine something like the FS-9 if you chopped off all the stuff above the barrel, got rid of the bit of the foregrip that runs along the mag, and gave it a coat of OD green and grey.

The magazine is a battery. The projectiles the gun fires come from an internal tungsten block. Each shot shaves off a tiny sliver of the block, which is then propelled to relativistic speeds with magnetism.

Because M4s and AKs are too recognizable and need to be greeebled up to pass as a sci-fi gun. Meanwhile a stock white tavor looks pretty sci-fi to the uninitiated moviegoer. Same reason you see G36s used by "futuristic" armies, if you gave them M4s they'd look like they're from the present. This is also why motorcycle helmets are a cheap and easy pick since again an ECH or modern helmet is too in the present to look futuristic, not after decades of sci fi promised HUDs and enclosed helmets for fighting anywhere and everywhere. You need to remember, all fiction is derived from previous fiction be it explicitly or implicitly. Also makes life a lot easier on the prop department if they don't need to hack up a sterling to get a possible prop

Lasguns are normally used by normie foot sloggers. But even without recoil a rifle needs a stock to brace its weight and stabilize it for the sake of ergonlmics. You're right at least in that they don't necessarily NEED one mechanically. Theres variants for cqb with no stock and stuff like the Hellgun which drops the stock and magazines for a backpack feed and focusing mechanism that just let's it spew ass as fast and as hot is possible.

I incorrectly assumed it was a space marine weapon. An additional point of contact would make sense for a human to hold it but it's kinda pointless for mechanical power armor which wouldn't need an extra point of contact to steady anything. It's a bit like having that laser sight on the handgun in the Terminator. Why the frick does a Terminator need a sight when he's already got electronic vision? This kinda shit happens when directors choose things which look cool rather than really thinking about what makes the most sense.

              >Why the frick does a Terminator need a sight when he's already got electronic vision?
Marine guns interface with their armour systems so it's probably some kind of targeter mechanism.

Why would you assume the Terminator has perfect aim? it can probably align its hands to a point of aim consistently but there's nothing to imply it knows exactly where its shooting, in fact the first movie shows it kinda sucks at aiming, it takes forever to aim the 1911 with the laser, and it picks three other guns that allow it to not aim as much to compensate(the AR-18, the SPAS-12 and the UZI). Maybe its fleshy exterior didn't give it the most secure grip, maybe it lacked enough sensitory capacity to truly feel the gun like a human would, maybe it just had slow as hell software, but it relied a lot on spray and pray instead of super precise snap shots, and brute force.

Now Terminator 2 is another matter, both terminators are very quick on top of strong, the T-800 snatching the shotgun, landing precise knee caps and avoiding killing any cop all say that terminator was way more skilled than the one in the first movie.

You're gonna freak when I tell you they're still using pump action shotguns and 7.62 in Halo about 600 years into the future

Well, they were the future. We got derailed off that timeline and the future got cancelled in favour of equity and tolerance. We had a choice between "future" and "stupid" and we chose stupid.

What's that carrying handle? Do they come with one?

        Anonymous

Yes, but if you want the carrying handle to be tan, you have to buy the black version of the rifle.

Wow This thing looks like ass but that carry handle goes UNGODLY well with the MDR, it's the strangest thing i've seen in a while

sadly they don't offer it separately for some reason. Maybe one of these days i'll ask if someone wouldn't mind donating a serial number to see if i can get a 'replacement' one

You can't really call out 40K for being moronic, it's supposed to be moronic.

Being intentionally moronic doesn't protect something unless it's a dumb shit comedy, otherwise it's just bad.

Funny you should say that, that's exactly what it is.

        >jokes on them i was just pretending to be moronic
no, i can still call it out. intentionality just adds new layers to the moronation.

Yeah you can but it just means you hate fun. If you're complaining about weapon realism in a setting that features demons, sentient fungus, Literally Judge Dredd and spaceships with ramming prows you might be autistic.

It's such a shame that Primaris are already losing the little bit of webbing the models had before, I liked them solely on the basis that they put more tacticool looking SM models out there. You can't hate those guns though, pure 90's overbuilt shoulder mounted frickgun vibes.

I wish more Sci/Fi alternate history stuff would do this. Cawadutty Black Ops shoulda had stuff like shortened Garands with frickhuge laser tubes on them instead of 1980s guns in Vietnam with weed leaf holosights ffs. The real secret agent/SOG skunk works items are never the snowflake 1-off prototypes but b***hin cutting edge electronics on proven platforms like the M3 carbine w/NV scope. MGSV as well. It's supposed to be the cold war dammit, I want a Grease Gun that shoots airburst ammo, I don't give a frick about having post GWOT optics in 1978.

Elysium's guns felt more "realistic" because it had the cool sci-fi ~railgun~ that makes cool sci-fi noises but an AK-47 with some futuristic-looking movie augmentations attached to it is just an extrapolation of actual trends like an M2 Browning with modern optics. The original M2 entered service in the 1930s, nearly a century ago coming up.

          Cant argue with that tbh

Wasn't it also on the psuedo-standard NATO optic mount?

            >psuedo-standard
Honestly the rest of NATO should have just told the US to frick off and do whatever gave them small arms anus tingles.

So are illegal immigrant workers, but that doesn't mean you can't get benefits by paying a little more.

In the 70s having any sort of optic was a luxury, and being able to smack it off things regularly was more or less fantasy.

It's because from a technological endgame perspective, bullpups are have the highest potential. If you can give them an electronic trigger and make them eject their casings somewhere that isn't next to your face, you've eliminated the two main factors precluding their widespread adoption.

      Anonymous

      >Electronic trigger

      Uhhh how about now.

Bullpup triggers are perfectly fine for combat use. A dumb grunt laying supressing fire doesnt need a 1lb racegun hair trigger on a combat rifle.

Because they look very different from traditional firearms but are still easily recognizable as guns.
The flat, boxy-looking design helps too. It's basically the opposite of the steampunk aesthetic, where things are made to look old fashioned by having lots of visible details and showing all the internal components. You'll notice that futuristic-looking cars are also based around very simple shapes.

      Anonymous

To add to the second point, bullpups look more futuristic than normal guns for the same reason that the car on the bottom looks more futuristic than the car on the top

    >more compact more energy efficient
It's a proxy for futuristic exotic rail guns, lasers ect. and removing the stock takes away a ubiquitous design feature in General Audience minds.
