because we're a professional force and not a bunch of edgy wannabe larper losers (at least most of the time). Americans conduct war like going to your 9-5 office job, and you don't go to the office in a balaclava.

as a side note this is why I'm upset we abandoned normal collars for homosexual "mandarin" collars

I have and mandarin collars are fricking gay and you should be ashamed to wear them. Lapels are useful as frick for extending the usefulness range of temperatures for a uniform by turning them up and down, but that's not something I'd expect any seppo burger to understand since none of their military learns basic fieldcraft or soldiering skills. Mandarin collars are the military uniform equivalent of an adult wearing onsie and a diaper.

None of the US military learns basic fieldcraft or soldiering? Really? I get third world cope over this type of shit, but this is just genuinely pathetic.

And any outdoorsman of the slightest bit knows lapels are better than not having them in cold weather conditions, this isn't some groundbreaking secret. Only thing better is a turtleneck that can go high enough to be a half-face-mask and be rolled down securely when not needed.

i dont get what hes trying to say either "omg i pop my collar and i get 3/4 of an inch around my neck for warmth compared to mandarin collar only pops up 1/2 of an inch. (so to speak.) clearly just splitting hairs. or actually great at baiting thinking that mandarin collar is always worn up and velcroed while in gear.

US SOF don't usually do police work so they don't really fear revenge attacks from cartel/mafia etc.
They don't usually commit war crimes.
They might wear them in the cold but we don't see hundreds of photos of them in the alps, usually it's jungles or sandboxes.

Probably because balaclavas are specific kit depending on the environment and purpose of the mission.

If you're in cold weather, you'll probably want to wear one.
If you're on task in an urban centre with large amounts of civilians, you'll probably wear one for identity protection reasons.
If you're in a warzone, balaclava or no, the people you're fighting want you dead anyways so it is redundant.

Why Swat sometimes dont use them despite fighting mostly in a urban environement

        Anonymous

SWAT teams tend not to be classified as special forces in the US. Mostly because it is military nomenclature, and the military and police forces are mutually seperate entities.

It really depends on various factor to why they do or do not wear balaclavas, personal preference, whether or not it will be highly publicized, who exactly they're going after. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't, that's all there really is to it.

You don't need one for arresting a crackhead with a hostage, no one is coming after you.

You might for raiding a cartel safehouse.

They're hot and you get sweaty, I wear them for cycling in snow or skiing but I take them off as soon as convenient.

        Anonymous

Because SWAT doesn't fear revenge attacks by gangs that have more power than them, or the military. No need to hide your identity when none that you arrest dare touch you for fear of the life sentence and prison gaurds leaving your cell open so Jamal and his boys can get all up in your bootyhole for an extra hour of private visitation.

  11. 1 year ago

Because they are not comfortable to wear and often times are unnecessary in certain environments. You will only see them wearing mask or balaclavas when they are in cold or sandy/dusty environments. There is barely any practicality for balaclavas in most cases and SOF are not larpers. US troops will occasionally wear balaclavas, but thats like 1 out of an entire squad that will be willing to wear them.

My guess would be because they're usually deployed in an advisory role, and balaclavas are sub-optimal for building rapport with the local forces they're supposed to be training. same reason (on paper at least) that they grow beards. hearts and minds.

Most pics you see on the internet of US Special Forces are either training photos or photos of them doing LRRP or coordinating with local forces. During direct action (kill/capture, hostage rescue, etc.), especially ones taking place in close quarters where there's an expectation that explosive entries will be necessary, you do tend to see them wearing flame moronant masks or balaclavas to protect themselves from receiving flash burns from things like flashbangs or door charges
