Coast lights are solid. I have a pen light I use to preflight in the dark.

Pic related is this Coast G16 the father in-law gave me too, it’s 1x AAA and it has the best beam I have ever had in a flashlight. It’s the perfect tiny pocket inspection light.

never understood why people want to strap a giant battery to their forehead. it makes the headlamp heavy so you need a thick uncomfortable headband. having to run the wire under my jacket to the battery bank can be mildly annoying but its way better.

The PETZL type headlamps aren't so bad. endurance runners use them and the batteries last 50 hours on the low setting.

I have a black diamond but it's only comfortable with a beanie on.

That Fenix is specifically made for runners and hikers. It's supposed to slowly step down immediately after being switched on as the runners' eyes adjust to the darkness. in turn, giving longer runtimes. It even has a picture of a runner on the packaging, kek. Maybe look at one of Fenix's general-purpose headlamps instead. such as the HM50R V2.0.

AA batteries are readily available at many gas-stations/store so you can get replacement's whilst your out doing whatever your doing. lithium-ion batteries aren't readily available. /argument

Sure if you are full blown moron maybe stick with AAs. If you can't possibly think ahead enough to bring a spare battery sure.

But ultimately what matters is the amount of power stored in the battery and how it can deliver it. A premium AA delivers 1.5v and stores about 2200 milliamphours. An 18650, for example. delivers 3.7v and stores 3500 milliamphours.

This means 1 18650 has the energy of a bit more than 3 AAs. If you care about high drain applications like super bright ass lights a AA maxes out at 2 amps while the best 18650s will do 35 amps.

So you can get a whole pile more light (more than 3x) from a full 18650 than you can a AA. If you do use that much light in a single trip they can all be recharged, some even have built in USB ports so you don't need a separate charger. Of course you can also get lights with built in chargers, either USB ports or sealed magnetic contacts.

And this is just 18650s. The difference against 26650s are even bigger.

Only a fricking moron would think being able to buy a AA in a gas station is a meaningful advantage.

What makes you think that all people care about when it comes to flashlights is runtime and lumen output?
A lot of people like the convenience and interoperability of AA's in that they are readily available pretty much anywhere, kind of like the gas vs. electric car argument: if you inadvertently start to run low on gas (AA's), it does not matter because it is readily available, whereas if you inadvertently start to run low on charge (18650's, etc.) in your electric car, you have to make sure you have a way to charge it and then wait while it does. Why is the convenience of AA batteries so hard for you to understand? Are you moronic?

I like AA batteries because they are disposable and I don't need to cuck around with recharging them all the time. I buy AA's in bulk, and when I'm done with them, I simply throw them in the ocean.

You're moronic. Lithium batteries are over rated hot garbage and the cost per watt is significantly higher for Lithium. Manufacturers moved to LI because of weight reduction which doesn't matter with something as trivial as the weight of a AA.
            [...]
You're very stupid. The bulk of devices used by PrepHoleers--that aren't cellphones--are powered by conventional alkaline batteries. The LI are a novelty, not the norm.

LI goes to shit in cold weather. Experienced ountaineers and winter campers absolutely don't use lithium Ion.

You guys know that cellphone chargers can also charge other rechargeable accessories right ?

I took an old iPhone cable, ripped it apart, put alligator clips on there, and then charged some 18650s straight off the USB bricks.

Keep a multimeter handy if you do this.

maybe where you live its different but in america you can buy 18650 li-ion batteries locally at almost any vape shop, smoke shop, or gas station. even small towns have a vape shop or smoke shop these days. they're very widely available now.
20xxx size are also widely available 14xxx are not as much.

and also you only need to replace them every 2-4 years its PRETTY easy to plan around. headlamps aren't picky like some digital devices, they'll still operate just fine on severely degraded batteries.

that's the initial purchase price moron. li-ion are rechargable and alkaline are not. how fricking dumb are you?
li-ion cost slightly under 3x per kwh but can be recharged on average 300-500 times.
that makes li-ion over 100x more economical than alkaline idiot.
