If you load a gun that has any known failure mode involving firing when it's pointed anywhere but downrange somewhere you intend to shoot it anyway, it's an ND not an AD.
It's only an AD if you are the ABSOLUTE VERY FIRST person who has experienced your model of gun firing without a trigger pull. Everyone after that has a duty to know that failure mode exists and act accordingly.

            Anonymous

The take would be less retarded if you didn't explicitly exclude untested guns, but it's stupid either way. An ND is for user error manipulating the firearm; an AD is for reasonable behavior that leads to the gun firing unintentionally due to some mechanical flaw or third party influence. For instance, while a firing pin getting stuck and causing an AR to slam fire isn't unheard of, it's so exceedingly rare that would be stupid to let it govern your behavior. Unless you were aware that your particular gun would do that, it isn't really negligence to load your ar at home to have at the ready for home defense so long as you have it pointed in a safe direction when you do so.

There are millions of gun owners, plenty of unintentional discharges do happen that are not the fault of the person behind the gun.

PROTIP: if you own a gun over a year without negligent discharging at least once, you aren't handling it enough. NDs are a natural part of handling weapons, just like tweaking your back is part of weightlifting and car accidents are part of driving. I ND several times a year because I actually HANDLE and know how to USE my weapons. It makes me a better firearms handler and marksman, and it's a small part of the price you pay in the sheepdog lifestyle Simple fact is, the "safety mentality" will build mental blocks in your head that will get you killed. You need to be comfortable putting your finger on the trigger and pointing the gun wherever you want no matter the time, place, or status of the weapon. Taking time to check whether the gun is loaded whenever you pick one up will serve to make you hesitate in a personal defense scenario. You fucking safety idiots are going to get people killed all because of this fucking "ND" shaming. Guns are inherently dangerous, you need to accept it.

'Feeling' the state of a firearm is one of the most vital skills and one that you should mindfully practice every day. Pick up a gun at your house, and feel if it has an empty chamber, then pull the trigger. Do not be discouraged by a couple of NDs in the process, eventually you will acquire the 'feel', and you will be a much safer gun owner.

        Anonymous

That is quite funny but I did narrowly avoid an ND based somewhat on feel and wholly by providence.
        >sick that day, shouldn't have been playing with my 1911
        >see a YouTube video on Israeli carry, think it's stupid but practice it anyway with an empty gun

        >Israeli draw and pull the trigger slightly on a 1911
        >yes, a 1911, SINGLE ACTION ONLY, basically a hair trigger
        >but something didn't feel right, maybe I felt a round chamber, back off trigger
        >pull the slide back and there's a bullet in the chamber
        >heart sinks
I now verbalize out loud "no more dryfire" after I load a gun up after practice, and it goes into a holster where it thereby assumes "definitely loaded" status.

Never had a single ND/AD because gun no go bang if no bullet in gun

oh yeah, had an ar I built using a mixture of a1 and 2 parts. had some tolerance issues. mostly a non issue. however I used a hiperfire trigger, and my grip just wouldn't quiiiite seat right. I wasn't going to force it. just a bit of use would wear it in. when you switched the gun from safe to fire, sometimes it would click. I told my gf all the rules of gun safety. I handed it to her. luckily, she followed them.

she followed them because either moments before, or the last time we went shooting, I was shooting my baikal 22 for the first time as well. I racked the bolt and it fired upon closing. it just takes some wearing in. I might have helped by ever so lightly using brass wool to deburr it.

after a few mags worth, idk, maybe 10, the ar loosened up enough where I could fully seat the grip screw. now there is no problem. I'm still terrified to keep it chambered indoors.

Had SKS slamfire once at range.
Had already gone through like 250-300 rounds of steel case, load a stripper clip in, slide the rounds into the mag, pull the clip and pull the bolt back to chamber a round - it goes forward and discharges once, into the ground ten feet in front of the firing line.
    Immediately unload and disassemble.
I *think* a piece of carbon or shellac from a Russian case or something got stuck in the firing pin channel in the bolt, but I have no idea. When I took it apart it was clear, nothing obvious.
Has never done it once since, but makes me slightly nervous every time I load the gun now.
Might have also been ammo related, sensitive primer or something? IDK, it's a mystery. 🙁

      Anonymous

The SKS is notorious for the firing pin getting stuck in the bang position if it gets a little too dirty. When it fired, it's possible the pin reset itself into its proper "home" position when you cleaned it and thus didn't see anything. But it is a real issue with the SKS and they have been known to convert themselves to full auto on occasion if the pin is truly stuck forward.

Just got out of boot camp, had big boy moneys, and bought my first ar. Took it shooting and only had the mag fall out two or three times. Returned home and I started playing with it. I was pointing it at my wall, looking through the new eotech, acting like I was going to pull the trigger. Racked the bolt back just to do it as a newtard and an m855 round I bought fell out. My butthole puckered from what could have been, and I have made it a point to double triple check for an empty chamber before I play around with my lead spitting toys

So I had a Spike's Tactical dedicated .22LR that had incorrect headspace. It fired the moment you chambered a round.
See this fired round? No primer strike.
Immediately sent it back to Spike's

happened to me at the range once, AR didnt cycle, went click, no boom, took the mag out pulled bolt back, nothing in the port, didnt see anything in barrel
    >hmmm.jpg
release bolt, pull trigger to discharge completely before i investigated, went bang. thankfully it was downrange but still made me shit. fucking ghost bullet in my gun. i still think about that one alot. only explanation that i have is i was just retarded and there actually was a round chambered, but then wtf happened when it went click? possible to get a complete misfire on a round that was still clearly okay?

Overall you shouldn't feel too bad about NDs. If you havent ND'd lately you havent been handling your guns enough. It's part of owning guns, and you should get used to them.

They start out funny, but then people don't get the joke and take them too far until they become a burden.

Another one for a single from a SKS. The gun was pretty dirty and it was an extremely hot day out, so maybe the combo was enough to make it stick. Finished the rest of the load from that clip fine, but pulled it apart to clean and inspect after. Nothing looked unusual.

    >Ever just load a gun and it FUCKING WENT OFF?
No, i dont by cheap shit and always follow proper firearms handling safety and i dont fuck with factory triggers.
Always clear the chamber twice, dropping the hammer each time towards a safe target.
Always keep loaded mags stored separately from firearms (unless carrying, duh)
Always keep loaded(its always loaded) guns pointed in a safe direction
Never put finger on the trigger until im ready to destroy something
Even if I was in a scenario where the gun had a legitimate malfunction and fired without the trigger being touched, it would go off facing down range.

brand new 22s can have rough edges. burrs in the chamber on a rimfie cartridge can cause it to detonate.

      you've never built an ar?
      you don't own an sks?
      nothing open bolt?
open bolt 22s are pretty cool because there's no firing pin to wear out. it just clips the side of the receiver.

When I was running shooting ranges for the Boy Scouts we had Savage Mk1 FVTs. They're great rifles, but seeing as how this was the Boy Scouts they were stored underneath a leaky water main during the off-season. Most of the rifles just needed a thorough cleaning, but we had one where the internals was completely fucked (rust poured out from around the trigger when operated). One time someone accidentally put it out on the firing line, and that's how we discovered it was the safety mechanism that had just completely rusted away or something because a kid managed to shoot it with the safety engaged.

    Had an ad once.
Grandpa passed away leaving me a Walther p38. Dad warns me not to use the safety, it will make the gun go off. Tells me about a story when he was a kid and grandpa put a hole through the ceiling. Brush it off must be fud lore. Go to range chamber 1 round decide to test this theory safe direction safety to safe and BANG. Ok grandpa was right wtf... Later let my brother shoot it a few times he goes to put it on safe, remind him that the safety is another trigger. Go to show him an example put full mag in aim in safe direction lower safety lever / decocker to safe position and brrrrrrrr. All 8 rounds into the berm... Holy shit. No one noticed.

I had a firing pin get stuck in a rusty ass sks and burned through the clip without my finger on the trigger.

open the bolt with a punch on a wooden block or something. remove the cosmoline with mineral spirits. apply oil. reassemble.

Either you cross threaded the grip screw or it was a chink knockoff grip with too long of a screw, there is no scenario where the trigger pack should contact the grip screw

the grip wouldn't seat right. the screw wasn't the problem. when the grip is not fully seated, the detent is not fully working. don't worry. the problem has been resolved.

I had an AD firing a (Turkshit) CZ 712 at the trap range. Hook broke off the back of the hammer and I sent some birdshot downrange when I hit the bolt release.

Years ago, I got a new Tikka T3 in .243 Win with a suppressor (I am a Finn).
I took a full week fishing, camping and shooting trip with it in my boat in the archipelago.
    >at the outer islands I set up targets
    >330 meter, 530 meter, 710 meter
    >grey ten liter plastic buckets anchored on rocks peeking out of the water with a battery impact drill and 4mm screws with plastic insert

Nice rifle. Also nice fishing and camping. Time to return home, fully satisfied.

At my home pier, I lifted my kit on the pier, to move it in my shed. I was tired from the journey. Happy, but tired.

I checked out my rifle, to ready it to be lifted on the pier.
I was seated in the middle seat of my 15 foot boat having a 20 hp Yamaha outboard. I had the rifle crosswise on my lap.

I opened the bolt, took out the magazine (3 rounds in there), and For Some Reason I placed the magazine back, closed the bolt and "dry fired" the rifle.

The bullet went into the Yamaha outboard engine and destroyed the block beyond repair.

Ever since I have been literally Painfully careful not to ND Ever Again.

my rule of thumb now is to never ever ever load a new gun or a new to me gun indoors ever again. it simply is too risky. most people wouldn't do this, but it should be done.

My friend put my CZ52 on "safe" before he loaded it and when he dropped the slide it fired the freshly chambered round. It never happened to me because I always leave my guns on "fire" and just don't load the chamber if I don't intend to shoot, but we tested it after and it would fire when the slide dropped on "safe" about 80% of the time.
Apparently it's a known issue. I hope he learned his lesson.

I have a m3a3 and nd after I had a trigger installed. You could blow on the trigger and it'd be enough for it to pull. If I can find the oem trigger I'll probably revert back to it.
