I wish. I’m more of a sport hunter though. I’m definitely not stringing up and butchering a deer. I usually just take the head and let it rot until it’s just bone. Deer skulls actually look pretty /k/ino

Not bait hunting for sport is a valid reason to hunt. Are you one of those gays who prays to good every time he kills a deer and uses every part!

what a loser lol, go shoot squirrels or something

        I do that as well

Why does this make you seethe so bad? A lot of people are sport hunters. I actually like venison but I’m not going to waste my time butchering an animal when I can just eat venison chilli my uncle made

I'm the exact opposite, I trap them live and then just slice some meat of when I want to eat it. That way I don't have to pay for a freezer. Some of it does grow back but eventually you have to let them go.

Our season for regular firearms isn't for a little bit yet, greatest time of the year kicks of November 12. Though muzzleloader and archery bros already have gotten things started.

I always wanted to get into hunting, but the lack of a anyone in my social circle that hunts makes it hard to know how to start.

Take your hunter safety class and ask questions.

That's the worst part. Take hunter's safety (in person or online); it at least gets you part of the way there. In person might net some friends; not sure, did mine online.

May I ask, how did you get into hunting? I'm very interested myself but I have no idea how to start. None of my relatives hunt so I don't have anyone irl to consult and I live in a metropolitan area but I'm willing to take weekends off to catch some meat for a month.

Go to your state's Dept of wildlife, recreation, conservation, whatever it is, website and you will find the rules for hunting, how to get permits if needed and so on. After that make a plan to go hunting with a friend that is experienced, and do that specific thing.
Bear in mind you will have a window of time per year in which to hunt that may range from days to weeks, so basically start planning for next year right now.
If you have no friends, call the customer service line of above said Dept and ask them, tell them you're new, and they will tell you what to do and maybe recommend a class to get started. Most states have volunteer programs where experienced hunters will break in the n00bs, and those are usually very solid, much better than you would expect.

Just did my hunter safety test yesterday. I've never hunted anything before so I'm going to start with some rabbits on my friends land. I hope they'll taste good.

They do taste good. You can tan the fur too, make your cat a funny cape or something.

Whats the consensus on hunting here boys? For the most part I know its based and when done properly its good for the woods.

However I have guilt killing free animals when all I have to do is just go to the store. I also know that most animals in the wild die much worse but I still feel bad. Thoughts?

      Anonymous

If you bought meat at the store, you'd still be eating an animal.

Conducted responsibly and ethically, hunting for meat is probably on average more beneficial for the world than buying the same amount of meat from the grocery aisle.

      Anonymous

With that being said, it's a matter of personal choice and ethics. If you don't feel comfortable doing it, you shouldn't do it.

its awesome if you live in an area where hunting is conducive, if its an expensive outing it kinda outweighs the benefit. I hunt for me and my dog cause its better for her than the shit store-bought meat or food.

Best way to treat a deer hide? I can't get it right, they always rot

        Damn that's clean. Thanks

"Treat" how? You dry it for storage if you don't want to tan it at the moment. That preserves it. A hair dryer and a towel for the fur and salt for the inside. From there, you can use a tanning solution of which there are a ton of different methods. PS: Frick buying little cans of salt like the guy did in the video; buy in bulk and save big money.

Also, everyone says accidentally using iodized salt instead of non-iodized "is a big deal guize!!!" but I've yolk tanned hides without issue no matter what I used to dry or preserve them for storage beforehand: I've used not only non-iodized salt, but iodized salt (no staining like people say it will) as well as borax (the one that "will frick with the tanning solution", but it will frick with pH so keep that in mind). Try to get plain salt, but if you can't NBD.

Pool salt is non-iodized and can be inexpensively obtained in large bags

          Anonymous

Nice, thanks anon; no chlorine or additives in it either. Might be a better way to buy. Water softener salt would be a great source as well (and it's much more common) but it's so coarse you wouldn't even use it to salt footpaths and roads; that was my previous salt source but it was too much work to grind and turned into a chore quick.

            Anonymous

Yeah I scoured forums for a while to find the best way to get salt for tanning until happening upon the pool salt idea. Bought a couple big bags for not much, it’ll last me a while

      Anonymous

And if you're drying for preservation, I highly recommend a box fan and copious amounts of salt. A half inch of salt on the hide is not unreasonable.

Got my first hunting rifle, Ruger American Predator in 308, 22", Vortex Diamondback scope. Using 150 grain Winchester Power Points, expecting to not have to go beyond 150 yards for the kill based on what the Fudd who I'm tagging along with told me. Wish me luck anons, I really want to get proficient at this both for the sport of it and so I can provide.

Getting ready for gun opener here in MI.
I like to do a combo hunting/trapping trip, find a good ambush site to sit for the first and last few hours and then still hunt my way on over to check my sets.
My real trophy last year was this real black beaver, super uncommon and a great catch down here in the mitten.

      That’s one helluva beaver

I was hunting squirrel. They seemed super jumpy for some reason despite being very active. Plenty on the ground, some in the trees, all running the moment I caught a glimpse of them or even before that. Maybe it was the warm weather. No clue.

I used to illegally spear hunt deer when I was a poverty ridden youth, super fun. Now I'm waiting on my newly acquired yew log to age to make a long bow to hunt with.
