Which European country is the most free of harassment in the military?

From what I've heard, in Eastern European militaries like Poland and Hungary, Russian army-tier harassment is so commonplace in the military that beatings and sexual assaults are routine.

That would be very surprising, as those are professional militaries.
Even in Lithuania's conscript military these things simply do not exist, although I know of a guy that was thrown out of the military for punching a conscript. His rank was the equivalent of a corporal.

In Polish army you were only forced to do stupid chores like cleaning road with spoon or toilet with toothbrush.

The phenomenon of "fala" (wave) in the Polish army became a thing of the past with the transition of the army to a professional status.
I have never heard of any rape incidents like those among the Russians. If there was a serious beating, it was usually related to some conflict between soldiers, not just a random occurrence. However, cleaning duties and verbal abuse were commonplace. To get slapped, one had to make a considerable effort. I was part of one of the last conscripted cohorts, and during my time, it was already ancient history.

From what I gathered hazing in the Warsaw bloc got progressively less intense the further west you went. Physical violence pretty much didn't exist outside of a few trouble units and it was mostly annoying or embarrassing shit.

i heard so many homosexual hazing stories from communist poland era its not even funny but nowadays its pretty chill the only hazing story i heard from my friend in polish military is people being locked into a metal locker and knocked arround inside said locker but thats basically it and imo if you tried to stick your dick inside anothers guys ass you would probably end up in a hospital and military prison

Finnish "service crimes" (palvelusrikos, basically any military regulation violation) are serious business.
Technically the slightest violation of military regulations is a crime, but for mild cases being notified about the violation or getting some minor disciplinary penalty from your unit commander is enough. If the commander is not satisfied with that, he can have you sent to a military court, which can hand out prison sentences if there are enough aggravating factors.
I mean, it's a fricking military; a bit of pressure, yelling, pranks, etc. is to be expected. But if you actually start harming your unit with physical/other abuse or whatever, the commander will likely get rid of you as quickly as he can.

There's a clear line between being a harmful butthole and being an efficient instructor. The best instructors know how to be effective while not conducting pointless assholism and this does not exclude being tough and demanding.

            Anonymous

Yeah, there definitely are cases where the being demanding and yelling (useful feedback) at someone's face is perfectly appropriate. They're supposed to handle much worse than that. Maybe they'll even remember it the next day.
But if the purpose isn't even to correct them, but to boost the instructor's ego or just "lower" others through gulaghomosexual style abuse, it's just harming unit cohesion at that point.
Some military cultures seem better at distinguishing those two.

What I really love about laws involving Finnish Defence Forces is that there is absolutely zero tolerance for any sort of politicization. When ever I see other countries militaries marching and waving rainbow flags and such, I am glad that such actions could be grounds for getting discharged from the military so no individual or part of the institution could even play with the idea of trying to push some agenda through military.

This combined with the fact that FDF has long traditions of being anti-communist, the original core of professional officers being based mostly around WW1 German trained soldiers and a few Czarist Russian Imperial officers, both who absolutely detested commies and mercilessly slaughtered them after commies started their red terror during the civil war, and that even to this day the few ex-officers who go on to politics are staunch right wingers, gives me hope in this world where leftists try to sneak in their corrupting bullshit through any institution they get their dirty hands on.

        >i wonder if it has to do with more females in the military, like nobody really cares about hazing for guys but your daughter would piss you off.
I think it's two things. Firstly, if a military is supposed to be professional then the things it does should make sense. The increasing professionalisation of militaries both empowers lower-down people to complain (because hey, I shouldn't have to put up with the crap!) and imposes duties on the higher up people to stop things that don't make sense, like hazing, from happening, or else they don't get to be in charge anymore.

Secondly, the increasing tolerance of gays ironically makes non-gays more homo-averse. What I mean by this is different from homophobic. It's not intolerance, but rather an aversion to being perceived as gay. Things which used to be fine and straight (naked showers with other men; slapping each other on the ass in the gym; sleeping together in the same bed; kissing your friends; assraping lower status men) become unacceptable not necessarily because the person who does them believes that they are gay but because they are gay-adjacent and the person fears being perceived as gay.

Both these factors I think act to suppress gulaghomo. I think even if hazing was still permitted in Western militaries it wouldn't have the homoerotic undertones because the people doing the hazing don't want to be perceived as gay themselves.

There's also an element of realizing that pointless and capricious suffering doesn't do anything productive. Like, the USN still has it's traditional shellback ceremonies, but that's a rite of passage, done exactly once in your career, and is done relatively in the open with the entire crew being aware to prevent people from going too far. It still does involve the gay adjacent stuff, but that might just be because the Navy is a bunch of fruits to begin with. However, that's way different from randomly deciding to frick with the new guy and it being up to the 3 to 5 guys who've probably been hazed by the others to decide just where the line between a little fun and being a dick is.

Real answer about polish military. Stuff like this doesn't really exist anymore in modern poland. It existed in communist poland (it was called fala - wave) but when communism was removed in poland and mandatory conscription was abolished fala started to slowly dissapear. You're a conscript, you're owned by their political leaders that own the most capital and they try to keep it balanced so people can't gripe as much about them having more than you but they still have so much more than you that you can't complain about it without being put away in a place where it doesn't matter. A conscript. You think the wealthy their kids don't get conscripted outside coushy jobs doing things they like or put way out of the way of harm and get brow beated to not do that or told it's just not a choice. Europe is a bunch of financial people back stabbing one another. You're not even a human bean when you sign up for the military process, and they don't give cogs that option.Conscripts they're forced into it like every other cog in the machine. I find it absolutely reprehensible to force people into military contracts. Especially when they don't want to be there. It turns into a college tier frat, you might as well hire paul giammatte to walk around in uniform and inform you that shia labouf is going to tell you what to do from now on. They're going to conscript people the more the previous conscripts died. They don't have a choice.

Combloc anon here, gays weren't allowed to serve even when mandatory service was still a thing. In fact, many guys faked being gay and told the army shirnk they liked men, because it was a sure way to get discharged. Back then being a homosexual was considered a severe mental disease and people who were diagnosed with the Big Gay were kicked out instantly. Rape wasn't a thing, because conscripts were allowed to meet with their wives and girlfriends fairly regularly, so there was no built up sexual frustration. Also, since everyone knew we would only be bullet sponges in a real conflict, no one took anything seriously and everyone was super chill.

I served my time in Estonia 2008 and at that point the bullying was all ready pretty rare. It did happen if you were annoying and lazy you got shit assignments and they didnt let you rest as much lets say in forest camps or they didnt let you leave for the weekend. But there was 0 physical attacks against any conscript. 2008 it was way more restrict than now the first 3 months are base course that you have to pass. It always resulted in what are effectively street thugs in uniform who are great at bullying civilians but get butchered the moment they come up against real soldiers. Look at Kadyrov's Chechens as a prime example; for all their homosexualy bravado and chestbeating their actual combat record is absolutely WOEFUL and would see any officer in a Western military get court martialled.
