i live in the heart of europe and we have bears, wolves, and boars the size of cars. the latter will kill you on sight, they don't fear men. you don't have to shittalk me on fauna, but we at least don't roam in bumfrick nowhere hoping to starve or dehidrate 100 miles from the next settlement, because we're not that fricking moronic. american pig.

The reason you're stuck in your European shithole is precisely because you're of the stock of human being who never left to the Americas to explore. American's are a group of explorers and adventurers, whoever lives in Europe today are the descendants of the peasants who were too scared to leave. So yeah, I guess "Americans are moronic for exploring their giant wilderness", whatever makes you feel happy, inferior of peasant stock.

        what are bears

yes, but FYI, unless you're in Alaska, bear spray is easier to use and more effective against bears than a firearm
        >In a study done in 2008 (Smith et. al. 2008), researchers analyzed 83 bear spray incidents (61 brown bears, 20 black bears and two polar bear). Red Pepper spray proved over 90% successful on stopping the bear’s “undesirable” activity. 98% of people involved in these incidents were unharmed by the bear.
        > In similar study on firearms (Smith et. al. 2012), they were effective 84% with handguns and 76% with rifles to stop bears from undesirable behavior. The study analyzed 269 bear-human conflicts in Alaska from 1883-2009. The study said, “firearm bearers suffered the same injury rates in close encounters with bears whether they used firearms or not.”

Yeah if you can't shoot, bear spray is fine.
I live in the Montana Rockies - bear spray is for tourists who are afraid of guns. I've been hit by bear spray because the wind turned as someone set it off. I had a friend get a canister puncture on a stump and got hosed with it spraying out of the side.
How can you tell grizzly bear from black bear poop? It's the spicy smelling one with bells in it.

          >somehow both is not an option
          >spray proved over 90% successful
          >the other 10% get mauled and killed
Yeah, definitely not bringing a gun, that would be silly. When the bear just walks through my spray cone and eats me, I'll have plenty of time to consider how better my chances were for not bringing a gun and deciding I could only bring one item, because it's like Alone, and you are item limited when you leave civilization.

          Anonymous

I feel like this may be skewed by willingness to use the spray vs the firearm, most people try to avoid shooting a bear if possible since that can be legal trouble.

Many Americans have actual forests and actual wilderness within walking distance. If you're in remote deep forest with actual wildlife you'd want to carry. America is fricking big, look at a map.

        Anonymous

There is no need to carry unless maybe in the Alaskan bush. Even in Montana the only thing you really need are bells on your pack to keep any bears from being startled and a whistle if one looks like it may be interested in you. I've never had a problem.

If I’m hiking in the local woods I carry my edc P365. Just replace the hollow points with FMJ for beast of the four legged variety. If I’m up deep innawoods or in bear country I have my Glock 20 in a chest rig with extreme penetrators.

I carry my handgun, not because of the hike, but because I have to get to and from home for the hike. And I'm sure as shit not going to leave it in the car while I'm out in the woods for the weekend.

You're over thinking it. 9mm has downed grizzlies time and time again. But I guess it's easier to throw money to a problem and do all this theoretical min/max vidyeah style RPG planning, than to actually just practice and get good with a handgun.

Don't really go hiking/camping anywhere near as often as I'd like but if I'm going innawoods fair bet I have an AK with me. Also want to get a spear no shorter than 7' to use as a walking stick but most I find online are much shorter than I want. Tip under chin bad.

    >but weight!!!1!!!twelve!!!!
I can handle a draco on a sling and a couple loaded mags just fine. Why can't you?

The webm is .40S&W, and if that can down a moose, then going much larger than that for self-defense is just extra weight. I carry a VP9 and I keep it in my hydro pack with my other valubables like wallet and keys, and that's always with me. Mostly for other people. (most) Wildlife usually won't make a problem with humans as long as you're not a fricking moron. Other humans are unpredictable and dangerous.

In over ten years, I've only had one real incident that wasn't related to pets that people had dumped. Was out backpacking in a (Indiana) state park and had camped for the night with the wife. It was dark and we were at that post-meal stage where you're staring at the fire and you know it's time to sleep, but you're just kinda zoned out because it's kinda chilly and the fire feels good. Anyways, we hear some noise approaching and a pair of headlamps. It's not impossible because we weren't too far off the trail, but already this is kinda strange because generally you keep to yourself after dark. A pair of raggedy hippy looking dudes stumble into our camp and they invite themselves to hang out with us. To be fair, the look isn't really a serious red flag because there's a lot of perfectly decent people that look like that out backpacking, but these guys looked sketch and usually you keep a healthy distance when you're dealing with strangers. These guys walked right into camp, so already I'm really on edge.

I was polite, but declined firmly and obviously enough that a drunk could understand, but they pushed the issue. I stood up and wienered the gun without aiming or anything and told them they needed to leave— and they got the message and left.

Again, only major incident in hundreds of trips, but the wife would be completely useless in a fight and I really wouldn't want to be in a brawl, outnumbered with only a leatherman, possibly miles away from assistance or even a road.

Seems good for survivalist stuff but not sure it's what I would pick against bears or other predators.
