trees are part of mycelium networks they don't have individual souls, just contribute to the overall soul of the forest

Based I run the 460 rancher too. What size bar you run on yours? I still have the 24" on, but I think im gonna slap an 18" on it for doing my firewood and what not.

        Anonymous

        I run a 20 inch bar.

          Anonymous

The 20" might be what I end up getting as 18s are sold putt everywhere around me. You do a lot of cutting or just occasional? I have to put up 10-15 cord a year for my house so my saws get a fair amount of use. I was using just a 37cc Ryobi and then went up to the rancher and it's like a dream, made my firewood cutting on hardwood like butter.

          24” here too

The 24" is cool and nice if I'm doing felling, but I just need something shorter and a little more manageable for firewood, but I'm glad it came with the larger bar on it for those occasions.

            Anonymous

we heat exclusively with wood. All hardwood. Red, white oak and hickory. We are on 30 acres and a little over 20 is all forest so I cut a decent amount of dead fall and dead standing. The 460 is really nice. I watched a lot of videos on chain sharpening and they helped a lot. I use a Oregon chain also.

Nice. I wonder if anyone's got a 555 in here. I've been looking at them too for doing our firewood, same weight as the 460 but 20% more powerful, obviously it's more expensive though and getting into the "pro" saws meme.

I use a buck saw that collapses completely in a tube.
    pic related.

The blade itself was shitty and i couldn't find a good one in the required length. So i bought a big blade, cut it in half, drilled holes in it and put a nail in the holes to secure it.
For better grip i put some hockeytape on the tube.

i really like it. At first it takes a little longer to set up, but when you're used to it's a great tool. The packsize is perfect.

the original blades are 32cm/12.5 inches.
I don't like the original blades, they dull to fast, are clear coated and tend to get stuck.
I find it best to buy long blades and cut them in half like i mentioned in the previous post.

Sven Saw. I've tried the folders and for the times that I am actually cutting wood for a fire I just didn't find them efficient. Having a packable bow saw is really nice, breezes through stuff. At under a pound I actually will strap it to the backpack for an overnighter.

Saws are for gays and tourists, real men and grizzled
PrepHole pros use axes, the heavier and larger the better
Jokes aside saw gays are annoying to camp with
Ultimately if you arnt PrepHole or casual get a saw and timidly jerk off the logs untill they split. (I'm a kukri kinda guy, I'm 1/1097th nip btw)

For me it’s the weight. Those couple pounds dropped from the 66 make a huge difference when it’s on your hip all day. Never used a 44. 36 and 46 are great saws but sometimes it’s just not enough on some of the big big climbing removals we get here, where a longer bar and having the ability to finish from one side is of a lot more value than say if you were logging. Going from 661 to 500i was a fricking godsend. Next step will be to get the 42” bar for it. I just got this thing a couple ago. I panicked at the saw shop and didn’t even ask about swapping the bars. What do you do anon, climb or log?

          Anonymous

Residential tree removal, private forestry management, hazard removals, fire mitigation. We do a lot of shit from all arboriculture professions. Had to tie into a tree today to piece out another tree that would have snapped under my wieght. Forested suburban developments to 40 acres treed plots. In an a pre logged area at over 7000 feet. Ponderosa pine makes up like 90% of the tree population. Thick forest but it's average age is like 70 years. We got some old frickers but not many, loggers took most of the straight ones, more big old co doms are around.
Not as many trees out here require a full size saw in the crown. Most climbs are handled with hand saws and top handles.

            Anonymous

That's hecking cool anon, sounds like the real deal. I am all urban production tree care. Get a fair number of big tight quarters removals with no crane. Need the big saw for those chunks. Also get to prune lots of big old trees and the people I work for are usually eager to listen and care about the tree health so I'm thankful for that. Lot of sketchy work happening in this business.

Thanks, I'm also blessed with a lot of great customers to work for. 20+ years of training and I'm not even thirty. Get paid to play innawoods and possibly keep people safe in the event of a fire.
              >First day I ran a chainsaw, the 440 I run to this day. My dad and I put out a grass fire on the side of the interstate. Watched the brush truck I called drive past us and come back 5 minutes later.
              >My first experience with kick back pirouetted me, nearly touched my dad's hand with the bar tip. Thank God for kick brakes.
Was hooked on tree care at an early age.
And city tree work gets my respect, that shit is always a lot more diverse in species and way too fricking tight for my claustrophobic ass. And we get no respect, no respect from motorists!

Classic bow saws absolutely rape wood and are quite light relative to thier effectiveness. Big issue with how awkward they are to back though. I'm talkin those orange, steel tube frame bow saws, not the ones that collapse all nice. I find that those aren't as reliable.
